A perfect film showing the long high level part of the S&C when the threat of closure was strong in 1983. It proves the advertising slogan that Ron Cotton used successfully when marketing the S&C to build up patronage and income: 'It you haven't travelled the Settle and Carlisle in winder, you ain't seen nothing yet'. And yet this winter film, which conveys well the harsh if dramatic landscape, was shot as late as the first week in April, a time of year when in Devon and Cornwall the Spring is well under way.... Many thanks. Excellent sound which picks up the rhythm of the jointed track and the sound of the old dmu.

Very happy this line stayed open - wouldn't mind the privilege of being able to travel up and down it someday...

Glad you liked it. It was meant to be my pension, if the line had closed. Imagine having a similar view of the Waverley......everyone would have wanted one. At the same time, I was not sorry to forego this opportunity, to have the line stay open. Regards, Alan.

Not in 1983. Apart from the 14X series, the second generation DMU's were not introduced until 1984/85. Judging from the horn and the noise from the vacuum brake valve heard at 6.35, it's most certainly a first generation DMU of some sort.
