@evalking You upgrade units by selecting the barracks, then selecting the middle-most icon in the barracks screen, then you see a sword, a bow and a spear. When you have enough wine in your small temples, then these weapons will be highlighted, allowing you to click on 1 which upgrades your future soldiers using that weapon. Gold is important. It gives your soldiers fighting power which is very important for the lategame battles. (Your soldiers have higher attack/defense)

Soldiers are promoted with gold, not wine. Wine is used for spells by priests.

The computer enemies of The Settlers 3 are very easy too beat, so I don't think it's that bad that they have a little advantage on their sides. On the other hand, no computer can attack you on an island, because they are incapable of using ships, thieves, donkeys, catapults and pioneers, which give you a lot of adavntages.

What have you got there? 800 troops??? you wannah try denfeding an Ostwall of 70 garrisons, 5 deep, with 3000 standing defensive army, versus enemy waves of 3000 at time. I have repelled up to a total of 10000!...with losses of course, but defender losses are 1 to every 4 of the attacker, hence with about 2500 you can keep 10000 out :-)

I have a very modern computer and run Win7. The game works perfectly for me. No graphic errors, no lag, no sudden shutdowns. The only thing I had a few issues with was the lan and something with a code. Fixed it all by using 'run as administrator'.

Isn't it easier to use Alt+1, +2, +3.. to assign numbers to the troops, so you don't have to select them every time manually? That way you can also check how many soldiers are still alive. And in case if you wanna cut your losses, send a 100 archers first. They will significantly reduce enemy lines and you don't need them after the battle. Once they're gone, deploy the rest of the army.

incorrect, they are promoted with wine (or beer or mead) and it fills mana, their combat strength is increased by gold

@Ryannnn182 This may be a little late so you may have it figured, can be as simple as right clicking on the settlers 3 icon and click properties go to compatibility, select 256 colours select windows 98 or whatever for run mode hope that helps

Ive never seen gameplay from Settlers 3 until now, but I absolutely love Settlers 4. I'm amazed how much the two look a like. Why is that? There is hardly any difference in the graphics or even the interface or music.

@grisapa1 Secret ;) Build a brewery, get the engriedients and pour the alcohol into a small temple.. Then you just have to DRINK! DRINK! DRINK!!! And when its 100% you can promote any type of solider at the "settlers menu", the right menu with a settler at it in the military section

May i know swordsman or spearman have higher damage output, as i know swordsman move faster than spearman while spearman have insignificant range advantage. How about their life? which one more suitable as a tanker? :)

+Lim Donald spearman have better life/armor best tactic send in spearman first. let them tank the first waves while the archers kill everything . then send in the swordsman

1. this is setlers 4 2. you should build more bowmen and less swordmenn 3. if builing swordmen, at least have some healers, or, you know what, 5 % healers should e predent in any army

Inciner4te There is a small trick involved using an hex editor. You gotta look for certain values and replace them. Sadly it is only up to 1920x1080. Also possible with settlers 4.
