You are lucky to come to Taiwan at the end of September. Otherwise, summer in Taiwan would be a hell for people who grew up outside of the tropics. Except for the weather of summer. Taiwan is a good place. To me, it’s a bit more chaotic than Japan. But at the same time it’s a little less stressful. You can wander around the street in slippers without makeup. The people are also very kind and very open to foreigners.Taiwan is a very relaxed country. You can go to the beach in half an hour. Or go into the mountains for the same half an hour. If you like nature. By the way, you can put egg and cheese or tofu into your Hot Pot. The center of the guava is edible. If you don't like it, it will be faster and safer to scrape off with a spoon than with a knife.

I totally did the same thing when I moved from Rome to London! I immediately gravitated to the Italian shops and bought Italian goods. I think it's really interesting to be able to see your reaction to Taiwan and its culture from the perspective of someone who's new to Taiwan. Love the vlogs and hope you'll enjoy Taiwan as much as I did! I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but you've stumbled onto an interesting facet of Taiwanese life with the toilet paper holder issue. Taiwanese households tend to use kleenex-style toilet paper rather than the rolls. There's also a strange aversion to throwing toiler paper into the toilet due to a belief that the plumbing in Taiwan cannot handle the paper. It's no longer a problem now, as the city officials like to emphasize every so often, but I guess old habits die hard. If you want to literally spice up your guavas, try guavas with plum powder. It's a pretty traditional combo and the flavor is crazy! You can find them at those fruit stalls you see everywhere. People take their plum powdered guavas very seriously in Taiwan haha. In Tainan/down South, if I remember correctly, there's a famous shop that only sells guavas with their special powder of plums and Chinese liquorice. Good luck in Taiwan and looking forward to all the new vlogs!
@LayersOfJenn4 жыл бұрын
Actually I had NOOOOO idea about the whole toilet paper thing haha. I mean when I came in December, the hotel we stayed at told us not to flush the toilet paper and I figured the pipes were not equipped for it in certain areas. But totally makes sense~

Guavas are even better when they're soft! After you cut them up, put a bit of salt on it and let it sit for 20-30 minutes. The water comes out and it becomes super soft and juicy. Also they're better when it's cold.

There is usually a Carrefour store near most major areas. It is the French equivalent to Target in the US that they opened in Taiwan. It's interesting watching you transition & explore new things in Taiwan - even little things like going to the grocery store and comparing prices to that of Japan (that was a cheap watermelon!). Also no, you're not the only one who shaves the peach fuzz off their face - not only is it great for shedding dead skin cells, it also aides in absorption of skin care products. Win win!! Hope your cut finger is healing aok too xx

Japan is in my Brian now lol. For example, when I first moved to Japan I would constantly be changing the prices from yen to Canadian dollar in my head… But now in Taiwan I’m constantly changing the new Taiwan dollar to yen in my head so I can understand how expensive some thing is
@maggie1983334 жыл бұрын
05:33 I don’t know if you’ve known this by now. But you can save the receipts electronically. You can sign up on an app and just show your own barcode for the store clerks to scan and you don’t even have to pick up paper receipts. For people with bank accounts, they can save their account information on the app. And when they win the lottery, the money will automatically deposit into the bank account.
@LayersOfJenn4 жыл бұрын
I have an app for all the recipes I’m keeping but, I don’t know how to tell if I won or not 😅
@maggie1983334 жыл бұрын
@@LayersOfJenn If you manually scan in all your receipts into the app, you still need to keep the paper receipts when you win the lottery in order get the winnings. The lottery result is announced every 2 months on the 25th of the following month. (Result of Jan/Feb is announced on 3/25 for example). You can check on your app afterwards. The app will tell you if you win or not for each receipt you've saved. You can also create your own 載具, basically a bar code to let the store clerks scan in order to save your receipts electronically. The process is a little difficult to understand via text. There are YT tutorials but i haven't found any video w English subtitles. The government website is this (in Chinese) for further information.

Love these vlogs; I’m from the Caribbean & was so surprised to see palm trees! Do they have bidet style toilets there like in Japan? Also, your current apartment looks so much bigger than your old one.
@LayersOfJenn4 жыл бұрын
One of my toilets has it but, it was a “selling” point for the apartment. Like when you’re looking at listings… A selling feature that realtors will use is “Japanese bidet toilet”
@GlitterHippie24 жыл бұрын
LayersOf_Jenn wow, so maybe not standard. We bought a Japanese toilet seat off Amazon when got back from Japan the first time we traveled there, I wish every toilet had those features.

Loved the vlog ^^ . Moving to a different country can be both exiting and scary... it would be nice if you could share not only the good bits, but also some of the struggles... I moved to a new country a year ago and everybody was telling me how lucky I was, but they didn’t really see the struggles...I’ve to deal all the time with me feeling like I’m being “ungrateful”... the balance is tricky to get!!
@LayersOfJenn4 жыл бұрын
It def is!! I’m not ungrateful either is that’s what some people are thinking. Just leaving the life you’re built can be a lot but also, it’s very exciting starting new again!!

Use SuperGlue on a cut like that - especially if you want to continue cutting / getting it wet. It will simply fall off after a few days and the cut is already starting to heal underneath.

@@LayersOfJenn - Trust me - it's the best! An aerosol version was used during the US-Vietnam war to spray onto open wounds before evacuating the soldiers from the battlefield. Mid wives use a medical grade (same stuff, just way more expensive) version of it to repair an episiotomy after childbirth. Because of the area, it's way less prone to bacterial infection than a traditional suture or staple. > 12 years ago - probably closer to 15, we came home in the morning of what we call 'Boxing Day' (the day after Christmas Day) to find our young cat with her guts torn open and literally hanging out. It's 1am or so, she definitely looks like a gonner - she'd done her best to clean herself up and looked very weak. The family was panicked and quite frankly, our budget simply would not have survived a trip to the vet at 1am on a Public Holiday. So.... LOTs of saline bathing of all the dirt and soil out of her and then carefully gluing each 'layer' of tissue back together. The outer layer was a killer of course with all that fur and I had nothing to remove it... She was *never* my biggest fan. Always a 'mummy's girl'. But to her credit, she just lay in my lap and let me do everything with hardly a sound. She must have been in so much pain! When we finally go done, she did lick and break the first layer of skin open again - just a natural response I guess. We "re-glued" her and I think we either found a cone or were just more diligent about watching her. Then after about a week or two, she was as good as a brand new one! She was also my new buddy - it was really strange. I was still "second prize" to 媽媽 of course, but something clicked in her that said "yeah, he's not too bad either!" - and now she is going on 17 years old. Still fit and active and no evidence of that scar at all. So - you can even repair pets with Super Glue! :) I sent you an email. I really want to return to my beloved Taiwan and was hoping you might share some of the procedures involved? Oh! I meant to add - there is a really friendly guy or gal at your nearest 7-Eleven, Circle-K or Family Mart that will sell you a tube. Try to buy a pack of tiny 1g tubes and keep them in your knife drawer! :) 謝謝妳!

@@LayersOfJenn well, only 3min after this video I realized that you guys live in Hsinchu, there is a branch closer to you. But you still should checkout Breeze (if you haven’t already)... cheers from Songshan (Taipei)

There is a ikea pick up center in Hsinchu but I wonder if you can buy things from there without ordering online 🤔 And thank you, I haven’t heard of Breeze 👀
@radiumdude4 жыл бұрын
@@LayersOfJenn well, even if you could buy things there, it would probably a very limited choice. even the branch here in Songshan has not all things. There is a monster branch in Sindian I believe. Breeze or Jasons are good for all those hard to find groceries. Alternative to Wellcome, PX mart. BTW: you should make an outdoor video of the great outdoors here: Elephant mountain, and it’s “secret spots”- I have not seen that anywhere on youtube yet 👍

Ohhh I’m trying to find mountains to climb that are do-able for someone like me (a beginner). I know Hsinchu has. A few as well~

Liked the video! Good to see that you're settling in in your new apartment. That shower head looked real fancy-schmanzy! I'm so jealous.. I don't even have a shower where I live right now.. O_o. It's suboptimal to say the least. Anyway, try to relax and take your time getting the place the way you an T want it. Peace!

Hi Jenn If you like peanut butter, you definitely have to try "福源花生醬" which is Hsinchu specialty. Several stores have this brand's peanut butter. But I highly recommend you directly go to that store to buy it. The address is 新竹市東區東大路一段155號. It's near Hsinchu downtown. Take a shot. :D
