Hiking is not " mentally fatiguing" - it is mentally stimulating and satisfying. That's why we do it.

I want to add something. Specially as a solo traveler in case you end up in any bad situation try to help yourself at first before waiting for someone to rescue you. Don't lose time

All very good points. Especially the “not at home” comment. Not that I post much but even shsring pics can be interpreted as being away.

Great tips and information. I appreciate your b-roll showing you learned some of these from experience like the battery power bank running out

Thank you! Haha yes I still remember the exact feeling I had when my battery bank ran out at the end of day 4 of 8!

This is one of the best compilation of advice I've seen on preparing for solo adventures. I've done a lot of backcountry backpacking and bowhunting across the US, Canada, and South Africa, and the things you cover here are probably the most overlooked aspects of planning a solo trip. When you are on your own in the outdoors staying engaged is largely a mental game. The only way you can stay fully engaged by taking care of all of the details outside the trip.

Great advice Haley. As a hiker who vlogs along the way, pre planning is so important. I'll gladly subscribe to see more of your videos.

Nice video, the biggest problem I have is keeping my mind in it, I often dwell on things outside of where I am and what I’m doing. A PLB is an absolute must, I’ve been lucky enough to not have to use one, just remember to self test (if your PLB allows) to make sure it’s working properly before you intend to use it
@settohike Жыл бұрын
Yes I struggle with this too, especially on my most recent solo hike. I don't think I ever completely got 'in it' I look forward too my yearly PLB test as then it feels like i'm using it 😂

As usual Hayley, you are right on the money and these are wise words worth recalling to front of mind, even for those of us who do solo hike as our default setting.

Solo hiking is great, unless something unexpected happens. Then it can be horrible and a bit scary if your new to it. Great tips and advice. 👍

Thank you so much Hayley! Your videos are highly informative and have inspired me to do the GOW solo in the near future (to be shared after I return lol). Love your work!
@settohike Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! As you may already know the GOW was my first ever solo trip so its a good one for soloing! It means the world that you are watching these videos 😄💚

@@settohike Hi Hayley! I just completed the GOW solo over 5 days! All the tips in this video helped - I started doing overnight hikes before I did the GOW and took a PLB. The trail was amazing, challenging and taught me many things! Also met many other people on the hike so it never felt alone. Thank you for the GOW videos, packing and food videos as they were highly helpful too! Now resting my poor feet :P

You should get in touch with Alton Goods (Quality Australian Company) - it would be cool to see some gear review or brand reviews from your end!

I don't really like to go on solo hikes, and sometimes I hate myself for that. One of the reasons is that we have a large population of bears where I live and, somehow, I'm not able to sleep well if I do that. I tried and it's not really working, but I still have hopes for the future. On the other hand, everything seems more intense when you are on your own and I admit, it can be very rewarding and it can make you grow and to be more confident overall. :)
