As AWS objects storage service, S3 can serve many purposes when designing highly available, fault tolerant, and secure application architecture. These include:
· Bulk (unlimited) static object storage
· Various storage classes to optimize cost vs. needed object availability/durability
· Object versioning
· Access restrictions via S3 bucket policies/permission.
· Object management via lifecycle policies
· Hosting static files and websites
· Origin foe CloudFront CDN
· File share and backup/archiving for hybrid networks (via AWS storage Gateway)

But you didn't explain how your local data center servers were connected to the Storage gateway , you needed to have a VPN site to site with aws ? Or direct connect? Otherwise how on aws would recognize the private ip address of the virtual appliance??

There are number of Ways to connect Virtual Appliance with Storage Gateway. 1. Using Public Endpoint to connect where you don't required any VPN connectivity and 2 one in VPC or VPN I have used Public Endpoint connection to connect with my Virtual appliance
