Perhaps the most remarkable thing about SE7EN is that very little violence is shown on screen. Really, only the death of the killer (normally, a triumphant moment, but in this movie nothing is triumphant). And in spite of never showing the murders being committed, it shows you just enough that it messes with you psychologically. That's what makes it one of the best serial killer procedurals of all time.

🍿 *HEY MURDER WHISTLE* Most people try to say this is a dark movie and that the bad guy wins. . . . But there is a deeper message right in front of us in this film. In the beginning and throughout the movie Somerset (Morgan Freeman) is very cynical and has pretty much given up on hope. But at the very end he says that "he'll be around", and that the world is still worth fighting for. This movie brings me much hope because in my life and career i've had to see a lot of really bad things. But I identify with Somerset. Although he has witnessed so many terrible things in this life, at the end he chooses hope and does not give up. That is a big statement. Thanks for all you, Blank, and the Co-pilots do 🙏

I love the "rewatch-ability" of his movies. My favourites from Se7en are 1) Morgan Freeman listing the 7 deadly sins and looking at Brad Pitt when he says Envy, 2) Brad losing his temper and kicking in the apartment door (Anger, punctuated by JL saying "he's a hothead!)
@stegwise

@@thatguymark8381 yeah in my mind the killer is the Envy murder and later on when Det. Mills either is executed by the state or kills himself he becomes the Wrath murder. i can see the argument that the wife/baby are the Envy murder but they aren't sinners and by his own admission the killer is the Sin of Envy. he wants David to "become Wrath" but then the sinner needs to die. so i mean this doesn't really matter but the fact that it keeps me thinking it over every time i watch it proves the strength of the storytelling.

Wild Bill is even remarking that the client who ordered the blade strap-on had a limp. He's there the entire scene just watching. Mills even turns a looks at him. "John Doe, who hurt you?!" I highly recommend finding the comics they released for this movie, because you find out EXACTLY who hurt John Doe.

Supposedly, the ending that audiences got was originally supposed to be a director’s cut, but Brad Pitt demanded that this be the ‘real’ ending of the movie or he would walk. So they went with this, and it was the perfect, and most disturbing ending imaginable. You said that you really liked mystery themed movies, I’d recommend several other psychological horror movies to review. Brain Scan, Phone Booth, Safe House (Patrick Steward version), and 1408. All great movies that’ll leave you going, “Shut the f_ck up.” at many points throughout.

I knew this was gonna be a tough one. My husband and his nephew saw this movie in the theater, and nobody really knew how intense it was. After they watched it they felt so disturbed they turned around and bought 2 more tickets, to Braveheart. As a mental palate cleanser.

Great reaction, thanks so much for sharing. When me and my friends watched this when it came out, we left the theater in various states of "That was amazing!' and "WTF did we just watch?" Such a good movie and all the actors just nailed their marks. Someone else will probably comment on this, but if I'm not mistaken Brad Pitt actually hurt that arm during that chase. Next time you hear 'What's in the box!?" Your mind will flash here. 🐾

Saw this in the theater when it was released. I want you to picture for a moment, not having the ability to pause this 💩 and attempt to absorb things. That experience traumatized me, and a feeling of despair stayed with me for weeks.

JL you didn't disappoint. I know I'm not the only one who was waiting for the Victor scenes, and of course the ending. When Victor jumped that scare the crap out of me the first time I watched the movie. I have this on DVD and one of the extras is you can read all of John Doe's notebooks. I have no idea how long it would take to read them because I gave up after ten minutes. JL for me this is one of your best reactions. I can't wait to finish out the week.

You are special. Why? Because you don’t even know me, and yet you’re the ONLY person who can CONSISTENTLY (not just once OR twice) not only make me laugh, which isn’t easy; but also make me laugh when I couldn’t have anticipated laughing. It’s such a personal thing that it fascinates me.

This is an incredible movie, and while I know Kevin Spacey is not the best human being on the planet he is a fantastic actor. For this role Kevin Spacey set aside a one of the Se7en deadly sins...Pride, to help this movie keep the mystery of who the killer was alive till the reveal. Kevin Spacey suggested that his name be kept off of all promotional materials for this movie. He was not listed on the movie poster, in the trailers, or in the opening credits. He suggested this because right before this he had just done The Usual Suspects, and he thought that everyone would figure out he was the killer instantly after seeing that Freeman and Pitt were the cops.
@HopelesslyBenedicted
@HopelesslyBenedicted 8 ай бұрын
I wondered about this while watching the confrontation on the stairs with the "photographer." Of course I've seen this movie many times by now but I'm sure if people knew Spacey was the villain, they'd be able to recognize his voice as the photographer, even with the accent he puts on. I was a teenager when this came out so I don't remember much about the promotions but it makes sense that they'd leave him out to save the surprise!

Fun fact- initially, Gwyneth Paltrow’s head was meant to be shown on screen. Therefore, a prop replica of her severed head was made. However, Brad Pitt was adamant that Tracy’s head should remain off-camera, allowing audiences to picture the gruesome sight in their heads (a wise decision). So, the replica of Paltrow’s head was lost to time, shoveled off to some warehouse. And that is where it stayed until Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Contagion’ found a use for it. Paltrow’s character is one of the first victims of the deadly virus around which the movie is based. Her character dies quite early into the proceedings, and we’re shown a rather gnarly autopsy sequence featuring, - no prizes for guessing - the replica of Gwyneth Paltrow’s head, initially created for ‘Se7en’. What a journey for Paltrow’s severed head. Made for ‘Se7en’ and then discarded without use, it waited for 15 long years to traumatize all who would lay their eyes upon it. After 15 long years of waiting, we finally got to see “What’s in the box.”
