Top notch wildlife viewing on this trip! Which encounter was your favorite?

Definitely the cows. LOL. Seriously though a toss-up between the cat and Billy. Happy trails to you.

The cows lol! Getting to see the goat up close definitely elevated it, the kitty was so far away

Layne, outstanding video, such beautiful views and lakes! I've heard of hikers avoiding a mountain lion but never one stalking it! Thanks for taking us with you!

That sure was a lucky experience with the lion! The cherry on top of this beautiful area. Thanks for coming along!

Wow! What a special trip! Rename the title to, "I snuck up on a mountain lion, and renamed a lake!"

That wasn't a trout, it was a Buluga Whale!

That’s a catchy title Matt! This was a special trip, I enjoyed it. Some hefty trout in there for sure

@@LayneComfort might run into you on the trail sometime, you never know. I live and backpack in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Also hike a lot of trails in the region, including the AT. Been hiking for over 67 years. Heading out west this fall to get some bucket list stuff down.👍

Enjoy the time out west, knock out that bucket list! Happy Trails

What a nice watch, that mountain goat was probably considering walking up to you to get a good salt lick

It was certainly considering something but it would’ve gotten a good salt kick instead

I have not finished your video, but compelled to make a comment. Yes SEEING a puma is a big deal. Fisheries Biologist and backpacking for 44 years. Been followed twice at a safe distance (curious as a cat) and caught between a mother and kittens working in that same area. Could hear mom communicating and I backed out and returned to finish my work the next day and saw the prints. Glad to see the lake (Baldy) that I camped at has not burned. Also drove a snowmobile for Bogus Basin Ski Resort along side a cat and it turned away and went down a run called Wildcat. Full gallop for 10 seconds. Also saw a kitten standing on the side of a Forest Service road ( no doubt the rest of the family very close. 4 of five encounters while on the job. I backpacked once into the Seven Devils and worked on a 100,000 acre control burn 25 years ago before the area burned. Looks like most of the area has burned at one time or another since my time. Sad! It was so much more beautiful then

Thanks for sharing, I love getting comments like this! You've seen more wild puma than nearly every other person alive. I certainly cherish this one opportunity that I had to be a witness. Burns are the unfortunate story of the West. Seems like pretty much every area has either burned or will burn. I know from working in Glacier NP that fires are as much a story of the landscape as water is.

The nice thing about that map is that it doubles as a ground cover. #multiuse So sweet you saw a mountain lion, definitely worth it even if the paranoia sets in afterwards. As I was driving out of Joshua Tree last month, a mountain lion ran across the road - probably the highlight of that trip for me, even if it was from the car!
@LayneComfort11 ай бұрын
The map was my backup plan until I lucked into that TP stash. Still super cool to get to see the lion from a car, most will never spot one at all

"I liked it much better when I could see the cougar." LOL, me too and I wasn't even there. That is so cool, but I definitely would've had a heart attack!

I've heard the trails are not clearly marked and would not make the hike alone knowing that wolves, cougars and bears are in the Idaho Mountains.
@LayneComfort5 ай бұрын
I found the navigation was no issue there on the main loop and the side trails I explored but YMMV. Wolves & black bear provide no real danger and lions little. The most dangerous part of this adventure was driving before & after which is statistically much more likely to cause catastrophe than spending time in the wilderness.

I hiked for over 20 years and never saw a mountain lion.
