Seven surprising results from the reduction of Arctic Sea ice cover | David Barber | TEDxUManitoba

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. It is now well known that sea ice in the Arctic has changed in both extent and thickness over the past several decades. In fact the change in sea ice is seen as one of the key global climate variables confirming model estimates of global scale warming of our planet through the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) process. Extensive investigations at the leading edge of Arctic System Science have recently uncovered a number of surprises, many somewhat counterintuitive, each having significant consequences in the Arctic and through teleconnections to the rest of our planet. In this talk I will review the rate and magnitude of change in sea ice, put this into the context of our understanding of the ‘natural variability’ in sea ice over the past several thousand years. I will then review seven surprising impacts of this change: 1) increasing coverage of young ice significantly changes atmospheric chemistry; 2) more snow both preserves and destroys ice; 3) Polar bear habitat can actually improve in some areas while deteriorating in others; 4) match-mismatch timing in the marine ecosystem increases vulnerability; 5) uncertainty as to whether the Arctic ocean will increase or decrease in overall productivity is a key unknown; 6) evidence that ice hazards are actually increasing while the world marshals to increase development of Arctic resources; and 7) evidence that our recent cold winters are actually linked to our warming Arctic.
Dr. Barber obtained his Bachelors and Masters from the University of Manitoba, and his Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo, Ontario. He was appointed to a faculty position at the University of Manitoba in 1993 and received a Canada Research Chair in Arctic System Science in 2002. He is currently Associate Dean (Research), CHR Faculty of Environment, Earth and Resources. Dr. Barber has extensive experience in the examination of the Arctic marine environment as a ‘system’, and the effect climate change has on this system. Dr. Barber has published over 200 articles in the peer-reviewed literature pertaining to sea ice, climate change and physical-biological coupling in the Arctic marine system. He led the largest International Polar Year project in the world, known as the Circumpolar Flaw Lead system study. He is recognized internationally through scientific leadership in large network programs such as NOW, CASES, ArcticNet, and the Canadian Research Icebreaker (Amundsen), as an invited member of several Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council national committees, international committees and invitations to national and international science meetings. Dr. Barber was instrumental in a national competition to bring a Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) to the University of Manitoba in the field of Arctic Geomicrobiology and Climate Change. As a member of the Centre for Earth Observation Science he leads a polar marine science group of over 100 people

No matter how charming the speaker is or how informative the talk is, most of the information worth sharing is lost if we can't see what the speaker is speaking about. This makes what might have been a valuable talk almost worthless in its video form. I'm sure you would agree that is a horrendous waste-even of your own time and effort, as the video editors. In most cases, the speakers are not up there to be featured in their own fabulous close-ups; they want to communicate something, and they've designed visual aids to help them communicate their important ideas. So what about the Norwegian ice breaker that got stuck this year? 1924 there was no ice at all north of Svalbard, what kind of fee do we have to pay for buying better and more ice for the polar bears? We need more CO2, not less, the plant life is at a starving level.

It was a lot warmer in the last Interglacial Period, and the Polar Bears made it through it fine. Who told you CO2 drives temperature? It never has in the past, (see Vostok ice core data). A warming during this interglacial period is not only possible, but likely as past interglacial periods have all been much warmer than this one, (Coolest interglacial in last 1/2 million years), we could warm by 4-6 degrees C. The last interglacial was 4 degrees C warmer than we are, and the oceans were 20' higher than now.

Real scientists have been studying the record of the planet's climate, using ice cores from Antarctica, among other places. You should learn what research is and how to do it. Search for Vostok ice core data graphs. Read the pear reviewed articles about their findings. You have only given us your title, "Dr. Climate Denier", and your name, Mr. "Duhhh". With all your studying of a picture of one area, over a relatively short time period of time, when do you predict the next Glaciation will begin? I'm guessing it will start sometime between now, and 10,000yrs from now.

when the newest largest Norwegian ice breaker set out recently for the North Pole it ran into ice much thicker than expected , was damaged and had to return to Norway . I think the takeaway is that satellite estimates of ice thickness are not to be relied upon . also , there is significant yearly variation . ice cover is greatly affected by wind speed and direction . as of 2021 there is no statistical trend in arctic sea ice for the last 15 years .

It's 2019, 4 and 1/2 years since this was made. the ice on our north and south is growing. And, if it is too melt it would not be the first and it wont be the last. Polar bear population has increased since the recording of this.

He is right about the south pole and polar bears. The last three years have seen a drop in temperature which is due to passing the grand solar maximum; this trend should continue until about 2044. It will be a few years before we see a definite reforming of the Northern ice sheets due to natural fluctuations.

Greetings, Very easy to search the massive Jakobshaun Glacier in Greenland, because of it`s scientific importance it is referred to as "The Canary in the Coal Mine" of Glaciers and was receding at the alarming rate of 1.8 miles per year and a reduction in depth of 130 feet per annum --- HAS STOPPED and is now INCREASING at the same rate as it was receding over the last 2 years.This video is 4 1/2 years old and there have been massive freezing events in the past 3 years in Northern Europe and Greenland. In 19 zones in the arctic the number of polar bears recorded has increased by over 8,000 in ten years, i am pleased to report. Kindest Regards.

1. A Reminder of basic Physics. Ice only contains salt if the ice water freezes too fast for the ice to reject the salt. So that rotten Ice.. would indicate a lower temp' at winter. 2. Water that distrupt the air above would lead the disruption. So the vortex should have been over water. Not it the continental US. Not to mention Canada. 3. The old Ice is there anymore. Same time- the old Ice is hazardous. Ok.

When the ocean is open enough, the resulting heating of the atmosphere over the Arctic ocean should become an area of rising air instead of falling air as it is classically. This should suck the climate zones northward and disrupt the major grain growing areas of the northern hemisphere. The polar jet stream should disappear and we might well have a two Hadley cell system in the northern hemisphere.

I have difficulty understanding what you are saying. With no ice there is no reflected summer heat, all you will have is refracted heat but a lot more of it will not be refracted, surely? If not refracted it will absorb at depth. Do you have any idea how much that will be? Also how have you managed to compute your thermohaline effect?

Nope we are at the end of the warming period and ice age "coming" (ok can be between few months to few centuries lool... but coming... Big ice periods about 100000ans with a 15000-20000 warming period. We are at the end of the actual one! +variations of 400y, and this one is coming very soon! There are no growing icecaps in the antarctic. The sea ice there is greater in the winter, but it is because of all the freshwater melting off of the continent that freezes faster than saltwater. The surface of the sea around Antarctica is diluting from the runoff of all the melting ice on land.

Due to the size of Antarctica and the circumpolar current both ocean and atmospheric there is an increase in snow well inland (was always in the models , in fact due to it's peculiarities Antarctica melt was not expected until next century), but happening much quicker due to the warmer oceans eating the ice away from underneath and allowing the great ice sheets to flow down to the ocean. It has also been far warmer in West Antarctica and the loss of land ice there is resulting in a rebound of the crust, this matters because it is a volcanic region (lots of volcano's on East and West Antarctica) and that rebound is altering the viscosity of the crust and mantle as pressure is being reduced on volcanic vents and magma channels meaning increasing volcanic activity as the magma plumes head crustward, this will just melt more ice. Tipping points are being approached all over the place

Wrong, the worlds tallest ACTIVE volcano is in East Antarctica - there are plenty of volcano's and active areas under East Antarctica, look it up. The thing is they tend to be well inland and as a result are covered by mile high ice sheets and actually in many cases provide under ice oasis with huge liquid lakes with life and a slow leakage of water along the bedrock

Very interesting presentation. I'd love to see a follow-up to see whether the issues mentioned have continued, increased, or decreased. Is there still a lot of "rotten" sea ice, and is it more than previously? For polar vortex, there was certainly a lot of attention at one point, but it seems to have disappeared from weather discussion. Is that because the effect is now routine, or because it has migrated to different parts of the world, or because 2014 was just one freak occurrence? What other new and surprising results have come from ongoing research?

Sea Ice does not make sea level rise. Ice is frozen water so when ice melts the sea level does not rise. If you doubt that simple example try the experiment for yourself in your own kitchen. Fill a jug with water and ice and mark the water level on the side of the Jug, Let the jug sit until th eice melts and the water level will be at the same mark as before. So all the talk and talk is baseless it is really meant to mislead you to panic and somebody is making money so follow the money?

Our planet is a constantly changing environment. Thinking that a single place on the planet is going to have the same environment such as temperature or amount of ice, year after year is an erroneous supposition in and of itself. Even the magnetic poles and spin of the earth are changing. You can try to measure the conditions but the results don't really give us as much a conclusive value as some are suggesting. Think of the human body or financial investment. Past performances are not necessarily indicative of future results. I have no problem with people making predictions based on past performances, but we should never take them to the bank and God forbid, let politicians alter our economic future based on these type predictions.

Too bad this guy is not familiar with history. If he was, he would know that around the year 1360, a group of Vikings from Denmark, led by Paul Knutson sailed into Hudson Bay and then up the river systems there, eventually reaching into what is now the state of Minnesota. They left a stone there that describes some of their exploits. The stone was discovered by a farmer and has since been named "The Kensington Rune Stone." It was thought to be a hoax for many years, but recent research has uncovered a document in the Danish archives that directs Paul Knutson to make the trip. Additionally, numerous swords and other Scandanavian artifacts have been unearthed by the plows of farmers throughout the region. You might ask what this has to do with sea ice etc. The facts are that back then, things were so warm that Vikings had made permanent settlements in Greenland, where they grew crops and thrived because of the warmth. They eventually had to abandon their settlements as the weather grew colder. It is still too cold to grow the kinds of crops that archaeology has shown them to have been raising during their time there. All of this shows us that alternations of cold and warm are the way of the planet, and that we out to simply adjust to the idea, rather be alarmed by it. For goodness sakes folks, we weven have fossil evidence that there have been tropical temperatures at the south pole in the distant past. Last but not least; CO2 is not poison, it's plant food. Don't let others do your thinking for you. Get out there and do your own research.

I’d like to see a similar dissertation for Antarctica. I’m reading that though the sea ice there may be thinning the terrestrial ice is growing. My question is what effect this imbalance in weight distribution will have on the planet as a whole. He doesn’t mention the magnetic pole migration which appears to be speeding up and racing toward Siberia. A pole shift seems to be in progress. The earth’s EMF plays a big part in changing weather patterns as well. A grand solar minimum has also begun reducing the amount of energy reaching the earth leading to cooler temperatures as well as causing an increase in both volcanic and tectonic activity. CO2 concentrations is just one part of a very complex system

Dr. Barber has an appealing avuncular style. His presentation was in 2014, and describes an expedition in 2009. It is now 2019 so that is 10 years later. Has all the Arctic ice now gone? Are the Polar Bears gone? The Arctic is a relatively small conglomerate of floating ice chunks. Why no mention of the Antarctic which holds 90% of the world's fresh water as ice.

Some 70 years ago we were taught real science in school - topics such as the nitrogen and carbon cycles. Our forests and plants require atmospheric CO2 as "food", and cannot survive without it. Our physical bodies require a certain level of CO2 also. I too love CO2.

Now, assuming I think I know what you meant to say, all (I repeat, ALL) predictions we have on what happens if we increase CO2 is purely theoretical, built on MANMADE MODELS that have so far been wrong. Every single prediction has been wrong! Let's take a look at Al Gore's famous hockey stick. During the Industrial Revolution, global temps WENT DOWN, not up. During the Great Deoression, global temps went up, not down. Hmm! During the WW2 era, global temps went down. Oops!

@Rick Torbet The effects of CO2 is well known and replicable in a laboratory, *IT IS NOT PURELY THEORETHICAL* The reason models are used, it is not exactly sure how much the earth climate sensitivity is but that it is undoubtedly resulting in increased global temperatures, that is observed facts. It would be a mystery if increased CO2 levels did not result in raised temperatures. The models are pretty accurate, don't know what you have looked at. CO2 is not the only factor that affects the temperature it acts like an amplifier, in the end it is about how much solar irradiance that reach earth and that varies but CO2 is undoubtedly increasing the temperature from what it would have been without it. Good example look at the moon.... The fact that not every year is the warmest ever is of course a good thing, meaning of course some years temperatures goes down but the trend line is clear, steady rising temperatures. Al Gore is not a climate scientist he is a polititian, not a great source for facts, he did get some things wrong but reached he'´s objective. What the alternative to "Man made models" is I do not know, stone tablets from God??

Umm NO. There is no evidence that increased temperatures is "undoubtedly resulting" from increased CO2. We really don't have any evidence in increased global temperatures at all. We see slight increases in some parts of the earth, and slight decreases in other parts of the earth. That suggests BALANCE, no imbalance. It doesn't help that our "global warming" data points have been altered. Some have been removed from the data in colder regions to help skew the data to make it look like the whole earth is warming. Again, you are drinking the Kool-Aid!! "but CO2 is UNDOUBTEDLY increasing the temperature..." Again, there is no proof that CO2 is the cause of temperature increases, if we even have increases. "The trend line is clear, steady rising temperatures." That would make sense, since every single "old earth" scientist believes we are coming out of an ice age. One thing people fail to recognize is if CO2 in the atmosphere prevents the sun's energy from escaping (warming) it should also prevent the sun's energy from penetrating (cooling). Here are the REAL FACTS. (1) The earth may or may not be warming, as data points have been removed to purposely skew the observations. (2) Plants are starving for CO2, and the limiting factor in photosynthesis and plant growth is not enough CO2. Plants remove CO2 from the atmosphere. If Democrats really wanted to stop increases in CO2, why do they make it impossible for Californians to grow grass? ZERO-SCAPING IS BAD !!! (3) Concrete production creates far more CO2 than an entire army of tanks. Why does no one ask that we go back to dirt roads? (4) The only sea level rise we have seen over the last 100 years can EASILY be explained by the billions of tons of soil being eroded from land into the oceans by natural processes. Illustration -- if you fill a bathtub with water, then dump some sand in it, the water level will rise. (5) eh, I'm bored. Stop drinking the Kool-Aid. Think for yourself and truly analyze what's being said. Look at only the facts, and no the fiction.

I also question the idea of trying to put crews on the ice after the longest day of the year. After the warmest months of the year this man claims to be unable to set-up on the ice during August and September. Trying to setup after the spring thaw and the hot summer sounds like a brilliant plan from the (smart) people calling themselves scientists. Why do I have more questions from this video than answers? So the great flood lasted thousands of years and this is where the story comes from.?!?!... But to get even more out there i wonder if people were forced to flee to Antartica but could one even live there even if most of it's ice melted? I suppose they could live on fish and seaweed to start with. I guess we will see once the ice melts. I'm not sure about the upper estimate of sea rising levels due to surface area, the meniscus effect, loss of hydrogen out of the atmosphere (from the sea water) and then there is the possibility of dredging also there is the amount of oil we pumped out and replaced with sea water. Not to mention the smaller volume melted water takes up over frozen water and could there possibly also be compression of water at great depths compressed further by the extra water above? I know water doesn't compress much but at such great depths the pressure is immense.
