That former winner is absolutely correct. Get yourself a good tax attorney, and accountant before you claim the prize. Do not sign YOUR NAME on the ticket UNTIL the attorney says to. File as an LLC: A Limited Liability Corp. Then claim your winnings under that name. Make copies of the winning tix and take a copy to attorney as proof. As an LLC, no one will know you are the winner. Make copies of the winning tix when you see the attorney. Establish a "Trust Fund" so you are taken care of for the future. Be smart if you win. Pay you bills, then enjoy life.

I just saw while checking winning Powerball numbers that the state of Oregon (my state) on the payout for winners, there is an additional 9% value tax ON TOP OF REGULAR 8% STATE AND FEDERAL TAX. @R3N- that’s not true... if they referred to themselves as husband and wife, they would be considered common law in some states... but you can live with someone for 30+ years and not be romantically involved (eg disabled kid with parents, friends, etc)... and just bc you had kids with someone doesn’t entitle you to any of their money whatsoever (unless you were married and the courts rule they have to pay you alimony)...

If i had the crazy stupid luck of winning a huge account of money, the first thing i would do is STAY QUIET, and start an LLC. I think it's usually about $1,000 a year for the fees to keep the LLC going, but for that small amount it would keep you anonymous, and save a lot of headaches. In some states, you can do that
