However Mandel's method involves lotteries that draw random numbers in a range. This means that the winning lottery combination often isn't sold. With those conditions lottery companies can make the prizepool much larger; some winning combinations will not be sold anyway. Mandel understood the maths and calculated in which lottery the prizepool was 3 times purchasing price of all possible combinations. His method only works if he is the only one doing this.

There was a thing in the country of serbia. There was a show on tv where the object of the game was: you call the show and give them a unique number with two decimals, basically a price. After a few h0urs of playing whoever had called in the lowest but unique number, wins a car. Important to know for the story, when you call in your lowest number and automated system tells you if you have the lowest unique number or not.But after a while they figured out that the same guy had won dozens of cars, but had friends etc. Come collect the prize as the supposed winner. How did he do it? He basically had connected several computers and mobile phones and automatically called in a number after number and the computers would calculate what the right number to call in was. The guy got arrested, but he basically said it wasnt illegal, but the show and the police claimed he hadnt played in the "spirit" of the game. No idea how the lawsuit ended. Well i hope you liked my story.

Back in 2007 I missed the "lotto south" by 1 number. I still won a few hundred. But it wasn't $14 million. In my first year of programming, I wrote a code that would display every single combination of the lottery. But it didn't work. I think it was too many results to display. I later calculated the number of combinations. I don't know how even to this day. Because I wanted to know how many tickets to buy in order for one to get jackpot. I didn't know they don't allow that.

I don’t understand where the “mathematical genius” part comes into play. He just bought all the number combinations - there’s no genius involved in that. I would think a more genius way to do it is to calculate the probability of numbers appearing again because if you know that the number “2” appeared in the last lottery due to odds it is less likely to appear in the next lottery and if you kept history you could probably make predictions on which numbers haven’t appeared in awhile. That would be in the realm of genius - what this guy did wasn’t anything special. Professional lottery players go for the minor prizes as the odds are better.

In the video they mentioned that he was able to predict 5/6 numbers for some lotteries in Romania which I'm sure required genius level math skills. He also created algorithms and intricate plans for carrying out such a global endeavor. The average person simply doesn't do this.

The amount lottery numbers is linked to the expected number of unique tickets. Adding a number (so 7 numbers instead of 6) gives approximately 40 times more combinations. This also means that the chance of someone winning the lottery with decrease 40 times. No lottery would want to create a system where the jackpot is only hit once or twice in a decade.
