Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #218
Exploring the ruins of an abandoned mining town in the Northern Nevada foothills. This place is so remote that vandals haven't bothered to mess it up much....and there was some pretty creepy stuff left behind!

I know this is an old video but just came across it. I visited Seven Troughs in 1974. My father was good friends with an older couple who lived there. The older gentleman worked the mine for gold ore and his wife made the most beautiful lace dolls. They maintained each of the outbuildings, which at the time were furnished and had beds with clean sheets for travelers to stay in. The larger house you went through was their home and it was quite lovely. When he passed, she moved to Reno to live with her daughter and BLM could not find another caretaker for the town. It is truly a shame to see how badly it has degraded and how horribly travelers now treat it. Thanks for the memories.

My grandparents knew Harry & Lulu who resided there. Harry mined gold and Lulu created beautiful porcelin creations that were gold plated with the gold he mined. I spent 3 summers there back in 1984-1986! My grandparents welcome sign was placed up there after they passed. That was their wish.

I did my homework. Tunnel Camp came about when the Nevada State Mining Company in 1927 decided to build a 100-ton cyanide mill on the site, in addition to boring a tunnel through rock to the Seven Troughs mines on the other side of the mountain. The purpose of the tunnel was to improve the drainage and haulage that hampered the previous owner Seven Troughs Coalition Mining Company. During the 2-1/2 mile boring operation, several gold veins were found. When wet rock was encountered, the costs went through the roof and the boring ceased in 1934. stay safe in all you do

Seven Troughs produced almost two millions dollars in gold between 1908 and 1921. The town was formed shortly after discoveries in the area in 1907. Sitting in a narrow canyon, over 300 people made Seven Troughs their home, and the town had a water system, power, and its own school district. Production at the 50-ton mill continued up until about 1918.

@@originalredneckgirl 1908-1921 was the primary period of production. Attempts were made after that to get the mines going again. Also, more than one mill operated in the district so the one you cited isn't the one referenced in PoliceChaplain Misty PoliceChaplain Misty's comment.

In the old days, a back porch would be turned into a bathroom. A front porch would be enclosed to make a mud room, or coat room. Old Dog Runs, a open hallway between rooms would be enclosed to make an indoor hallway, but the rooms would retain their exterior doors and the door from room to room.

As late as 1986 there was still a family living at Seven Troughs. The exploration group I worked with spent about a week tromping around the area-looking for microscopic (disseminated) gold deposits-and met a few "old desert rats" living in the area. A note to explores in the area: Be careful hiking the surrounding hills and mountains. There are mine shafts everywhere-most dug by hand! The oldtimers would dig a hole, with pick and shovel, deep enough to figure out there was nothing in the bottom, then change locations and dig another. Nothing was ever filled in or even marked so mind your steps.

For anyone who's interested in this place there's a You Tuber called Explorewithus that did a video here. Actually a couple of videos. There was a couple who leased the mine and buildings in the '70s. They made porcelain dolls there. The man had a sister who drove there from CA to collect some money he owed her. She never arrived and has never been found. Her car turned up years later in a dry stream bed that had been searched early on after her disappearance. Some people believe the car had been there all along and was just missed, but to me, pictures I saw of it didn't look like a car that had been sitting in the desert for years. The woman't husband was still alive when they found the car, but they didn't return it to him. The sheriff auctioned it, which in itself is odd. Very strange story.

Technically the area where the buildings are at is Tunnel Camp. The actual town of Seven Troughs was washed out by a massive flash flood in 1912. There is very little left to indicate people lived there. I know this because we drove all over the Seven Troughs site looking for these buildings that everyone posts. It was getting pretty dark or we would have driven to Tunnel Camp and found what we were looking for. Definitely need an AWD vehicle to get to these places.

There's some history up there;a woman went there to visit her brother (?) who worked up there (I think he was part owner of the mine),but disappeared on the way. Her car was found on the road, walking distance from his residence, but they never found her. That was in the late 80's,if I remember correctly. There's still people who go up there to search for her remains. You should read about it. That area is supposed to be haunted, too.

Looks like an ol gold mining town. Stamper battery gives it away. Rods rise and fall onto the ore, pulverising it to dust and it is treated with cyanide that desolves the gold and it is run across zinc or copper plates where it precipitates and is scraped off. Brick building was probably either company office and or managers residence. Doesn’t look too productive. Loved the dunny. Some one mentioned 1934 seems about right based on style. Did your government provide subsidies for mining like mine did. Where I am, you had to spend money to get subsidies and I think they made up a lot. Great commentary. Keep safe.

Always sad. My quick lesson for people's perverted desire to destroy. Build a neat sand castle on the beach. Admire it, photograph it. When you leave the castle to go back to your vehicle, it takes less than 30 seconds for any nearby kids to run through/kick and completely destroy the castle is less than a minute after you have walked away.
