Dublin, Ireland, Easter 1916. Seven men sign the Proclamation of the Irish Republic and kick off the Easter Rising, a famous rebellion against British rule. Over two hundred women fought or served with the rebel forces. Many of them were suffragettes and feminist activists and they made a powerful impact on the international campaign for women's rights. Presented by award-winning actress Fiona Shaw, this documentary reveals the extraordinary stories of Seven Women of the Easter Rising.

amazing, our history in schools needs to be updated and include the women that helped.

As someone born and educated in england I didn't know anything about the Easter rising or any other Irish history until I spent a couple of years living in Eire. Even what cromwell did was news to me. I feel it's a great shame pupils are not taught about this in uk schools, we deserve to know.

You'r right, Jonny, and I'm not even sure the history is taught in Irish schools these days, let alone in the U.K; too busy indoctrinating young children with all that woke shite. Hope you had a nice stay in Ireland and you'r always welcome.

Public Hospitals, Schools even main city streets should bear the names of these women and others that gave their lives for Irish freedom. These should be the heroes of every Irish female yet we barely know their names. I feel very blessed to have been able to go to a school on King's Inn Street and to have passed by the GPO on a daily basis for all of my school years knowing so well that Irish women and men gave their lives in the same streets. For ever grateful to their courage. May they all rest in light, power and peace.

the missed opportunity of Irish independence was that the Irish people never experienced freedom and instead spent decades under the boot of the Catholic church and an authoritarian state

so what is the real telling of this particular time of history in your opinion? How about actually expressing a coherent thought instead of throwing out a random statement that says absolutely duck all?

Ireland has a deep and divided history. I understand the Catholics want to be free. However, having shot soldiers, who were just doing their job - poor men fighting a rich man's war. The rebels wanted their wounded to be treated in hospital. Once you have murdered someone in cold blood you have lost all rights

@@grhinsondo you have any idea how history works for women? They had to prove that they ‘were as valuable as men were’. at the time. That’s why! We’re literally still having to do that over a hundred years later.
