Mr Ali's ego is the size of Wembley Stadium. His lectures (interminable, never-ending) are carbon copies of the writings of Edward Said, Noam Chomsky, Susan Sontag with a bit of Orwell, Sinclair, Camus, Gramsci, Foucault, Lenin and of course Marx fused together. He loathes Britain and English (the language of the imperialist) but has made his home in London and has stayed in Britain for years? One wonders why? I once asked a Marxist friend to assess the contribution of Tariq Ali to the anti-imperialist struggle "minimal at best, but he'll tell us how important he is when he writes his autobiography."

They all share common ideology. And some names you mentioned led the movement that he also aligns with. Nothing more normal than being inspired or quoting people with similar ideology. Some precede him. If someone is Marxist, a leftist surely he or she is expected tp include those names you mentioned. This shows he is well read and well versed on his thoughts, not pretentious. About Ego part I cannot comment much, most men in intellectual positions or position of success have that. A bit his style the way he speaks?
