"Hurt" is a song written by Trent Reznor, first released on Nine Inch Nails' 1994 album The Downward Spiral. It received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rock Song in 1996 but lost to Alanis Morissette's "You Oughta Know". In 2002, "Hurt" was covered by Johnny Cash to critical acclaim; it was one of Cash's final hit releases before his death.

Having heard three versions of the song, the one of Johnny Cash, NIN, and Sevendust I can say this is, for me personally, the best of all. It sounds awesome.
@austin4x9 жыл бұрын
So mich bullshit about Cash, Nails and Sevendust not knowing the lyrics to a song they chose to perfoem live. Here's some god damned clarity. September 12, 2003. This was recorded that day. Johnny Cash also died that day. They played this on the fly, unrehearsed, as a tribute to him. THAT is why LJ gives a shout out to Cash at the end, NOT because he is stupid and thinks it is a Johnny Cash song. That's also why Clint jacks up the lyrics and LJ sits the song out, because this isn't something they sat around the studio and practiced. It was a one off performance for Cash, and that's it. This isn't Sevendust's "version" of Hurt. If they wanted to have their own "version" of Hurt, they'd probably want to practice it once or twice and Google the lyrics. It was a spur of the moment tribute, that's it.

Dude unlike most people on the INTERNET. I made a mistake. I only knew of this song by Johnny Cash (HURT) so I assumed its was covered by NIN and then Sevendust. So my bad I thought it was JC original. So take deep breath and dont let this stuff get you all worked up BECAUSE unlike people like me there are PEOPLE who just jump in TRYING to spark a fire. That wasnt the case with my comment. My bad I was WRONG and can admit it. Oh and I didnt get to the end of this version because (IMO) it's not very good.

This isn't the comment you got an email for. The comment you got an email for was my reply to your comment. You have to scroll down to it. This wasn't directed at you. This was directed at the folks who were shitting on the quality of the song and the missed lyrics as well as LJ seemingly calling it Johnny Cash's song at the end. All of those folks would probably better understand if they knew this show took place the day Johnny Cash died. That's all this comment is about and it wasn't directed at you.

For those that keep asking about the Johnny Cash reference, This concert was held not too long after Johnny Cash's death and this song was dedicated to him because he had covered it himself. I had a few friends that went to it. @Hrafn22 Because the Johnny Cash cover used "I wear this crown of thorns"

TRENT ORIGINALLY WROTE AND COMPOSED THE SONG. FIRST PERSON TO EVER EVEN SING IT. THATS WAS IN VERY EARLY 90S THEN JOHNNY CASH COVERED IT BEFORE DYING. TRENT GAVE THE RIGHTS OF THE SONG TO JOHNNY. BUT EVEN THOUGH TRENT GAVE THE RIGHTS TO JOHNNY. TRENT IS STILL THE ORIGINAL WRITER OF THE SONG IN REALITY. ANYONE WHO SAYS OTHERWISE BETTER FUCKING LOOK IT UP.

It amazes me that people get pissed at them for saying Johnny Cash at the end. Yes Trent Reznor did write the song, but he exclaimed in interviews and in a commentary for Johnny Cash's video for Hurt that the song was no longer his in his eyes. Johnny Cash made the song his because Trent was almost in tears with the emotion and power in Cash's version. Do some fucking research before flaming other people and calling them all idiots. I have heard all if the versions of the song and enjoy them all, even if Leona Lewis did a "pretty" version of it. (Bet ya didn't know she covered it either)

They said Cash's name at the end because they played this in tribute to him because he had just died, hence the jacked up lyrics and Lajon sitting out. Lajon didn't know the sing at all and Clint barely knew the lyrics. Morgan is a Nails fan and talked them into playing this for Cash that night. So when LJ said "Johnny Cash y'all, Johnny Cash" he was paying his respects and they were dedicating the performance to him. All this crap about who's song it is wouldn't even be getting discussed if people knew this was recorded the night Cash died. Fuck it. I'll make it a main comment and maybe people will catch it before they rant. Probably not. But whatever lol.

A lot of people give flack to performers who make mistakes on stage. But the truth is it happens all the time. Its how you handle the mistakes that separates the professionals from the amateurs. When he messed up the lyrics a couple of times, he didn't skip a beat. He put something there and made it work. That's the sign of a professional and he deserves respect for that.

Some songs transcend the particular individuals who write/perform them. They are born of human experience and take a life of their own. Where did Trent find the words? Where did Johnny find the feeling. Which is the best version? They all are. This song strikes a deep chord. Sometimes life uses individuals to display its genius.

Hurt was first written and performed by NIN on the album Downward Spiral in '94. It was later covered in '02 by Cash. It was big for Cash because it was the last song he played before his death, as well as acquiring alot of fans who never heard it from NIN simply because the two artiest perform for quite differant audiances. Reznor and Cash were actually friends and considered it an honor. Reznors take on the song was more suicidal while Cash's was more spiritual.

I quite enjoyed this version actually... I do not care who wrote it, or who sang it originally... Its music. It is created to be listened to, not to be sold or bought, credited or gifted.... It is just to be listened to. This is an amazing rendition of the song, managing to make it more upbeat than NIN's version, but less depressing than either. Its more of a sorrowfully sweet song. Good on whoever the singer is, he's quite good.

I mean no one will ever be able to put as much emotion behind the song as Johny Cash did but I mean come on. Johny sang that song knowing that he was dying. He put so much raw emotion into it. They played it as a tribute to the man, cut them some slack and I think it sounds good.

Johnny Cash wrote and recorded a lot of music in his lifetime. He recorded a lot of serious songs, but he also recorded a lot of funny ones like “A Boy Named Sue.” There are a lot of Johnny Cash songs that I like. Some of my favorites are "Ring of Fire", "I Walk the Line", "Folsom Prison Blues", "Get Rhythm" and "Man in Black" just to name a few. But my favorite Johnny Cash song of all has got to be the song “Hurt.” Johnny Cash wrote the song in 1974 while serving time in Folsom prison.

Everyone perceives emotion differently. While some people might prefer NIN's original version or Johnny Cash's cover, what touches somebody deeply is all subjective. In my opinion, Sevendust did an amazing rendition of this song, and I don't find it lacking in emotion at all, I love it. It might have a slightly different angle than the original, but every artist will always try to put something unique and personal into a song, and I don't find anything wrong with that.

Nine Inch Nails wrote the original song, Cash covered it. In the Cash version, he said "...wear this crown of thorns..." instead of the original lyrics. Since Clint says "thorns", I think they are paying respect to Cash's version. To paraphrase Reznor of NIN "Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps. I lost my ‘girlfriend’, because the song isn't mine anymore. It’s reinterpreted by a legend from a different genre and still retains sincerity and meaning - different, but every bit as pure."

@melanieth1 he decided to cover NIN's song in reference to his former alcohol and pill addiction, winding down days and the loss of his lovely wife June to cancer six months earlier. the video is all about an elder Johnny looking at all his memorabilia and is truly heartbreaking. NIN or rather Trent Reznor's version was about his former heroin addiction. When Trent heard that Johnny was covering his song he was surprised that a country star like Johnny would pick the song.
