I just really love how Vernon does not force anything at all. If he doesn't feel the need to laugh, he won't. At the same time he's really kind, attentive and supportive which just kind of makes this comfortable atmosphere I adore!

Yes this us one of the things I admire about him! He doesn't feel pressured to be bubbly during these interviews to present a better image. I think he even talked about this in his weverese interview and how he only wants to be sincere about the things he says. Also in a radio show with Seungkwan and Dino, when Seungkwan was telling him to not think about his answers too much (as you know Seungkwan often feels the pressure of taking care of the atmosphere of a show) so Vernon clarified that he just wants to be understood, that he tries to be thoughtful about his responses. Seungkwan then says that he's really a simple and deep person.

It so rare to see any one as young as him but have these kind of mindset, most of people I know when they chill like Vernon they mostly being thru a lot and “taste” a lot of things in life , but Vernon he’s supper young and he just born chill like that . He’s genuine and I like that too. I feel like he’s comfortable enough to not force an expression on his face but he’ll never be rude or anything. I've been singing this song around the house, in the shower or whatever, for the past couple of weeks. It's so catchy!!! And every time I listen to it, I'm so impressed with how much Joshua and Vernon have grown over the years... Not only with their ability to convey their thoughts through the music and lyrics, but with their singing technique itself. Joshua made me feel things on this album, with how he got to experiment with his range of tone -- and how he feels more comfortable & confident being able to express himself in this song. And Vernon!!! Producer Chwe!!! He's been showing us his progress in song making this whole time, but 2 Minus 1 is seriously a bookmark achievement. I love how we're able to see his influences and inspiration, but with his own color in the music. I wish this interview was longer because I have so many questions about his process. And the combination of his voice with this genre is just perfect. I cannot emphasize enough how much I love this song. Have I mentioned that I love this song?

SEVENTEEN’s American members JOSHUA and VERNON takes us through an in-depth dive into “2 Minus 1”, the group’s first English track, as they break down the songwriting process and how it differs from writing in Korean, the contrast of the song’s heartbreaking lyrics versus its upbeat sound to symbolize trying to convince yourself you’re okay after a break-up, and the musical influences they drew from that inspired the song. Four things in particular stood out to me: 1) The way VERNON mentioned Avril Lavigne, Greenday, Blink 182, All Time Low was such an unexpected nostalgia because that’s the music of my childhood / teen years too. 2) JOSHUA finding it easier to contribute lyrics in English because it’s his first language (he was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, before coming to Seoul to be a Pledis trainee when he was 19) versus VERNON who found it not much different from their usual songwriting process (as a biracial dual citizen, he was born in Manhattan, New York before his family moved to Seoul when he was 5, so he’s more fluent in Korean than JOSHUA) was an interesting contrast to their songwriting process that actually ended up being complementary to each other. 3) For JOSHUA in particular, I find it interesting that he deliberately adjusted his singing style, making his usual sweet honey-like tone as a vocalist sound raspier to fit the pop-punk mood of the song, because I’ve always seen him as the most “chameleon-like” member of SEVENTEEN, in that he can easily change and adapt his vocal color with any style or genre. 4) I also love that VERNON’s calm, chill approach to songwriting had a calming effect on JOSHUA and gave both him and the audience a new perspective about writer’s block: just keep calm, keep pushing, and it will pass. (I should take that advice to heart too lol)

I might be biased because I grew up with the same groups that Josh and Vernon listed, but 2 Minus 1 is one of those songs that I could imagine playing on the radio back when I was in middle school. It's so catchy! Sometimes in kpop, you fall in love with the members and then you start liking their music more, but with SVT, I think most people fall in love with their music first and then stay because all the members are humble, hardworking, and honestly love each other.

Vernon and Joshua are the two Seventeen members that were easily recognizable to me when I watched their music videos. I watched a lot of their clips on KZbin too. I accidentally stumbled across their song association game video and I decided to check them out and boom! That's how my love for them began. It’s cute how they look like hyung and dongsaeng with the rest of the members, but when it’s just the two of them, it’s like their bond and aura is more of those in the US - like they switch personalities sksksks. And it’s fun to see them still comfortably speak in English. Esp Josh because he’s been in SK for a long time and he really grew up in the US so the adjustment must’ve been pretty hard.
