Not having a cell phone helped 7th grader Dillon Reeves make a stunning rescue when his school bus driver lost consciousness last month. Steve Hartman has the story in “On the Road.”

For parents with children who own devices, please teach them the severity of being aware while your on public transportation wether that is being on a bus, city bus, Uber, subway, etc. There is a MULTITUDE of instances that I know I don’t need to explain and we already know about. I have no kids to teach this to yet, but for those who have their little blessings PLEASE teach them the reality of this life. But don’t teach them to be afraid of it ♥️

I never gave it a name (situational awarenessl), but yes, I'm aware that``even in this small town in Central America, I'm usually the only one not walking down the street with her cell phone in her hand. I'm the only one on the bus or in the bank (you usually have to sit and wait!) who's reading a book, looking out the window, or people watching instead of being glued to her cell phone. I'm the only one at dinner, lunch, coffee who is focusing on the people she's with instead of on the little electronic box. It's probably because I'm no kid. I think this young man's parents are wise, and I hope that some day he recognizes that. Thanks again for a good-way-to-end-the-week story, Steve!

I kind of think the parents should stop patting themselves on the back so energetically for not allowing their kid a phone, and give the kid a little more credit! I was raised in the late 70s and 80's and we didn't pay attention much better than they do now. We just entertained ourselves on that boring ride in other ways. And even those that may have noticed would have reacted in shock and fear. It's a rare youngster that age with the gumption to stand up and act with quick, clear thinking and a take charge attitude. Kudos!

Dillon is respectful to his parents' rules about mobile phones which I totally concur with. It's not healthy to waste time on social media and staring at the screen all the time. But the way Dillon responded was nothing short of truly amazing. Five rows back, he spotted the problem and immediately got up. The rest, as they say, is history. What an amazing cool head on such young shoulders! He should be invited to the White House, no less.

So stupid to blame the phones. When I rode the bus to school and back in the 80s and 90s we didn't have phones but we were constantly talking, playing games (the analog kind), listening to music (walkmans were a thing) or even doing homework. Very rare anyone was just sitting staring at the driver or even out the windows for long.

This problem with kids and phones and situational awareness is bigger than people realize. Too many kids are being killed crossing the street, crossing railway tracks and other places because they're so focused on their damn phones - or they have things in their ears playing loud music and they can't hear the noises around them. All that kids are doing (as evidenced by the kids who commented in this video) with their phones is playing games and watching videos. The reality is they don't *need* cellphones, certainly not during the day or at school.

How to Conquer Fear - A Kabbalist’s Advice Just let the fear go. Don't think about what will happen in the next moment. We know nothing about what is truly going on in our lives. It is thus best for us to just let go. We hold such potential within us. Letting go of our fears requires some training, but we need it. Fear comes from our will to control situations we find ourselves in, and when we cannot control them. When we let go of fear, we then seemingly control the situations from another end. For instance, take one of the most common fears: the fear of death. Our death is inevitable. Accepting the fact that we will certainly die, we can then imagine how the world will continue developing after we are gone, agree with that picture, and let go of any current fear we have. There are no set steps, however, for how to let go of fear. It is different for each and every person. Some people start thinking along the lines of "What will happen to the world after I’m gone?” “How will my loved ones and my relatives continue their lives?” “What will happen with my inheritance?” and “How will my legacy unfold?” Faced by these questions, we need to make another correction-of our attitude toward life and death, which is behind our every fear. We should transform our fears into an absolute surrender to the will of nature-the will bestow that created and sustains us-which requires us to make a certain kind of effort. We might still have to go through a lot of frightening moments until we reach the end of our earthly path, so we should try to calm ourselves down. The laws of nature that created and sustain us, and which we are ultimately being led to discover, are in a state of absolute calmness and rest. We should thus aim to emulate nature’s calmness. We are calm when we are not worried about what will happen in the next moment. It is a difficult point to express because it is not simply about flowing with the currents of life. On the contrary, we need to rely on the laws of nature that operate on us at every moment, which control everything and everyone. Since we live within fixed and determined laws of nature that are in total control over our lives, then we have nothing to worry about. Do we want to interfere with the laws that are driving everyone and everything through corrections? Of course we don't. We then might as well calm down and move on with our lives. That state of calmness indicates agreement. It means that we agree with the laws of nature, which is quite difficult, because we always want to hold back, check what is happening in nature’s plans, and argue that maybe things should play out a bit differently.
