I just went to the wiki page for this movie, and Phelan is mentioned in the Reception section, saying that he "critically panned the film for its predictable, awkward and "annoyingly whiny" dialogue, shaky cam nonsense and that it was too dark to see what's going on." Its too accurate and I love it.

Film being a visual media I don't blame Jackson for making both Moria and Shelob's lair lot more visible than described in the book. There are ways to show pure darkness in movies or TV too but this isn't it. One thing the movie could do is show everything in night vision to the audience while character doesn't see anything. Or do what they did in an episode of CSI where a murder had happened in a pitch black restaurant. They showed the characters totally lit but everything around them was dark. So the audience had something to look at while giving a feeling of total darkness. That was a nice and original take on darkness.

It's more upsetting when a movie has a really good premise, but is ruined by really easily fixable things. Quarantine and Triangle are two others like this that Phelous has done. The story of Ping and his people setting the two up as sacrifices was solid and for the most part, good(mostly their capture/sex scene was nigh incoherent). The way this movie was made however is horrible.
@TemmiePlays5 жыл бұрын
This film is so dark, if you scrub the timeline in the video here on KZbin, it looks liek Phelan had a strobe light episode.

@NodDisciple19 жыл бұрын
Just Another Guy I wish they'd stop doing shaky cam. They even do it for films that aren't "found footage!" It's not "realistic!" It just gives you a headache and makes the film hard to watch!
@TheCinemaniac9 жыл бұрын
Brother Malachai I have to agree. Some films can do it and it fits them but 99% of the time it's just a needless gimmick and technique that actually makes the film worse. And it does get really tiresome nowadays.

I think that annoying arguments are common for couples in stressful situations so I guess I find that pretty realistic when they're not put in scenes where they're supposed to be getting away. I suppose if there are 17 other such scenes, it would get gearing.

What's worse about this film is that the production company is Haxan Films, the production company behind The Blair Witch Project and V/H/S 2, and the writer and director of this movie is Eduardo Sanchez, who was the writer and director of The Blair Witch Project and the director of the V/H/S 2 segment "A Ride in the Park." How does a writer and director so talented manage to create something as awful as this?
@BlazeHeartPanther7 жыл бұрын
Well, he is only one of the directors and writers. the other being Daniel Myrick. What's worse is that after those two split from each other, they couldn't make a good film since. It's telling when "The Visit" a film directed by M. Night Shyamalan and from the producers of FUCKING Paranormal Activity, is a better movie then Daniel and Eduardos recent works.

Seventh Moon. Fucking hell they're referring to the 7th month of the Chinese Lunar calendar, which, in legend, is the month when Hell gate opens and spirits come out to haunt people. It's also known as the Hungry Ghost Festival. But this movie got quite a few things wrong about it. For a movie with a several Chinese cast members you'd think they'll try to be more accurate in the festival's portrayal. They could at least have used actual traditional Chinese ghosts, like the jiang shi, the ghosts in this movie look like golems. But yeah, this movie is fucking bullshit. I mean, there are a lot of actual Chinese movie about the Hungry Ghost Festival and those are better than this piece of shit.

There's this other movie. I think it had Ray Wise in it (but I'm not sure) where he, his wife, adult daughter, teenage son and son-in-law are driving somewhere for Christmas (or something) when they get lost and they spend the whole movie driving around in the dark experiencing weird stuff and dying one by one. It was about as bad as this. There's also another one about a couple going to (or maybe coming back from) a New Year's party and get lost and drive around in the dark for the whole movie. I think that one claimed to be based on a true story. Guess driving around in the dark was a popular movie trope. :)

Now, if I could just figure out the name of the other one. I really see so many crappy movies that it's hard to remember them all. I used to see so many more when I got The Movie Channel but I moved and had to change companies and no more Movie Channel or their Splatterday on Saturday double features. We do get a channel that has horror movies every night starting about 9 my time but they just keep showing the same ones over and over again and rarely watch them. I do have Netflix and Hulu Plus but I don't use them nearly as much as I should. :)

Thank God the 3D craze ended the 'quick cut shakey cam' era. I'd much rather have blue lens flair if it means the camera is still and you can see everything. Not to say that shakey cam can't be used well. It's a great tool for when a film maker wants to convey confusion and panic or just intensity. It's to be used in 'scenes' not for the entire movie.
