I totally share your excitement about this film. Several years ago I made the same comment - each set looks like a painting in this film. I would call this movie USSR or Soviet and not Russian, bcs it was an ensemble of talented representatives of different ethnicities that created these films - Russian, Armenian, Jewish, Ukrainian, Georgian, etc. Since the collapse of USSR Russians never made films of such a standard. The screenwriter and the set designer, thanks to who the film looks so picturesque (he is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts) is the talented Alexander Adabashian, a very close collaborator of the director, an ethnic Armenian.

@@elladapetrosyan9610 "Since the collapse of USSR Russians never made films of such a standard" oh really? What about armenian movies? Surely without russians they have made a lot of progress in cinematography!
@elladapetrosyan96102 жыл бұрын
@@doqille Yes, really. As for the Armenian movies, first, have the common decency to write the word "Armenian" with a capital letter. Second, nowhere did I write that modern Armenian movies are of a particularly high standards. In fact, the same statement can be made about modern Armenian films and Soviet Armenian films - the later being way better than the former, multiethnic cast. I bet Ukrainians have exactly same feelings about films produced during the Soviet era in Dovjenko and Odessa film studios. But you are trying to twist what I wrote and steer this discussion in the direction I didn't intend to. It's like you have an agenda.
@doqille2 жыл бұрын
@@elladapetrosyan9610 It seems like it is you who has the agenda against russians, not me. That is called nazism. @@doqille come on, don t do this, it is such a shame, to read this silly fight here. Such a shame, for Goncearov book, for Oblomov, and for soviet movies. I deeply loved the book and I think this film is a small miracle, as always when a director does not betray the literary work that inspires him. I am well aware of the ineptitude towards life that paralyzes Ilya Il'ic. That Rachmaninov's vesper ultimately recalls lost affections and missed opportunities, and breaks my heart.

This story feels like a study of ADHD/autism/depression over 100 years ahead of its time. Brilliant film. I love how these films make the almost mundane (tho lavish) existence of the wealthy landlords and aristocrats, the bourgeoisie, still a beautiful looking and engaging story.

I think this comment takes away from the story. I find the story inspiring because anyone can find themselves in Oblomov’s situation, and can also find their way out of it. No need for diagnoses, all be the protagonist might show traits of them. For me it is a story about the tragedy of bitterness and relighting your inner fire, turning thoughts into actions, and ANYONE can relate to that.

@mistersquare73275 күн бұрын
@@DietrichStockman there still are poetic souls in Russia I`m sure. The economic system as it was organized after the fall of the USSR is the problem. It`s post-Soviet Russian capitalism with its corruption and trying to get money no matter what (often movie directors just get money from the government, make bad movies, failing both commercially and in all artistic aspects). I can hardly remember a dozen of decent Russian movies after 1991. One may criticize the USSR for the political censorship in the movie industry, but the censorship also prevented many untalented and unprofessional authors, directors and actor from doing bad movies. Often they try to imitate Hollywood, but it is so pathetic. Under capitalism Russian cinema lost its style completely.
