I learned about Rachel Ruysch from this video and went down a bit of a rabbit hole. This summer, when I saw one of her paintings in person, my excited hand flapping set off an alarm at the museum.

Lol, you're the type of person I would love to go to the museum with!

What a fabulous video, thank you! Very interesting - I’m about to do a floristry course about flower arranging in Dutch Masters in the Golden Age. How perfect to find this in my recommendations.

Great to learn about an artist I wasn't aware of, and a nice little history lesson about Tulip Mania, which is officially the Dutchest sounding thing I've ever heard, thrown in as well

Haha! Indeed, a strange but fascinating moment in history. There are some fun anecdotes about how nuts people allegedly went over tulip bulbs, though most of them seem to have been debunked. Awesome to introduce you to Ruysch! She was an impressive gal.

This channel reminds me, in a roundabout way, of the Good Eats series by Alton Brown. When it touches on different elements, it makes the content so much more memorable.

Excellent video, very educational and engaging, KZbin needs more of this type of content, and certainly algorithm has to pick this up a bit more because it was thanks to Reddit that I came upon this golden channel

I have to ask, is that your leopard gecko? I love lizards, and so am also intrigued by the paintings of Schrieck. I didn't know there was a female still life painter who made more than Rembrandt in his lifetime. Her paintings are spectacular, and the formal composition, color arrangements, perspective, lighting and modeling are at least as aesthetically satisfying as most purely non-representational paintings I've seen. And ten kids. Her oeuvre is an amazing achievement. I quite enjoyed this video.

So glad to hear! Her backstory is surprisingly weird and her paintings are magnificent - still lifes are often overlooked but they can be fascinating, especially when they’re done this well. Van Schrieck is also amazing, looking forward to eventually doing a video about him too. The furry lizard lives with us but the leopard gecko belongs to the internet! Thought we’d try to conjure some sottobosco vibes 🍄 🦎

@@TheArtTourist I was a little worried about the gecko with the cat. Yes, I used to not particularly care for still lifes -- Van Gogh's sunflowers excepted -- but by now I am fully converted: a believer!

I would love to learn more about mannerism, so it would be awesome for you guys to do a painter in that style

Sure! Mannerism is actually a guilty pleasure of mine so I’m thinking we’ll do a video about El Greco soon :)
