I hope the makers got some recognition for what they were doing, it really is a unique game, not like Dark Souls in the way some think, as in difficulty etc, but the atmosphere, mystery and overall gameplay are unique just as Dark Souls 1 was, except so few sen to have played this, you stil feel like your delving into something obscure which I love. The mystery to Souls is ruined, but I'd love a new Severance Blade of Darkness

I'm so happy that other people are also so deeply connected to this game as I was. I started streaming Souls games in October, and when I introduced this game to my viewers, there were a couple who found it really interesting, and I immediately felt like I showed them some hidden treasure. I long for a day when this whole community is united again, with arena games left and right and a possible sequel, even though I don't think it could ever capture the feeling of the original.

It's not, exactly. Souls games feature a lot of the elements that the Blade does, however, there are fundamental mechanics which are not present - bonfire, world re-set, open or semi-open world, separate statistics when levelling - to name a few. However, I do believe that this is a much closer souls origin, at least in spirit, than the actual Souls-0 - King's Field.

The original voices were in spanish and they did a really good job for the time, the english voice actors were a quick and unaccredited work when they tried to resell the game outside of Spain. It pains me so much to hear the english dub, because the original spanish voices are awesome and really give the game a much unique feel.

In general, I can point out several monsters at once, which are memorable for their character and the way they fight. Unfortunately, at the end of the game you already know what to expect from them. But the ideas are cool. 36:20 mind game too. This is the hardest boss in the whole game. Even then, when you get two of these vampires at once, you have a completely different health reserve and a different weapon, and his shield and scythe don't look as threatening as they did the first time. This boss keeps you on a leash, as if you have nowhere to go, as if your every move is directed against you. He keeps a good distance for a knight and a dwarf, doesn't let himself get hit and hits you every time you want to do a combo or drink a potion. Very cool! And even when you think you've already won, everything changes, he has a lot of life again and you don't have much. 47:22 About the sounds. I like the way everyone yells and screams here. This is one of my favorite games. Picked it up on release. Played 20 years later - this is after beating all the Souls games. Still feels amazing. Very good review on your part. You have shown pretty much everything this game can do (glitches included). The steam version still has issues (2022), however it looks great. It's a shame what happened to the development studio - this game is amazing for it's time and should have been praised much more.

Sargons Ice Sword shreds the Unholy One in mere moments if he doesn't teleport away. Using a power potion for unlimited Stamina and that boss is gone in seconds, before he can even fart in his bio-organic pajamas or whatever he is running around in. Remember you can re-exectue some power attacks like Nothern Cross without the full key combo, if you keep hitting the last two buttons. I love how this game makes the weak weep. And so easy for the experienced player. But both parties complain its too unbalanced. I wish Rebel Act Studios had more money and time to get the game running perfectly.

1:13:07 -- so can... *THE DWARF* . For some reason, very likely an intentional one, the Dwarf can use the Knight's Maces and Swords as if they were his own Hammers and Axes. This can be VERY useful, as the Dwarf's weapons typically lack the *RANGE* of the other classes... ... *PLUS* his FINAL weapon is... BLUNT... which is a HUGE problem for the latest sections of the game! :O Thus, when playing as the dwarf, it is ALWAYS a good idea to pick up the Knight's swords as you progress along the game! :) .

infact you dont have to wait for the animation to finish and you can cancel out of it with a dodge, the special is then queued up as the next action. example, forward+attack, back, dodge cancel -> special. you dont have to wait for the forward+attack animation to finish either. you can even weave this into the longer combos with special enders and cancel the normal combo to go to the ender.

I always took Sargon as the canon path for myself, leaving him for last whenever I play this game. I dunno, it just sounded right to me with all the talking of knights and stuff, and some of the cutscene animations at Dal Gurak's Tower and the Abyss look like they were specifically designed for either Sargon or Naglfar. That said, I won't berate people for thinking otherwise. Regarding mods, my personal favourites are the Mighty Dwarf and Amazon ones. They add a level of gameplay that could definitely have been a thing had the devs gotten more time. The Mighy Dwarf mod is especially useful since not only does it provide new moves for Naglfar, but it also fixes general problems with the game's weapon traces just not working at all (looking at you, Sharp Sword). The New Armours Mod is also cool. And the re-release eliminates the need for the Fog Fix Mod as well as the crashes you mentioned in this review. A fun watch, I'd say. You put that degree to good use.

There is a Mod where you can play all introduction levels with one Character, for example play as Tukaram the Prison of Tabriz level. It just adds you an extra time of playing the game so you finish 4 levels before you continue on the actual story. In the Prison of Tabriz there is actually a Death Sword you find in one of the rooms so you can use it as Barbarian and the Eclipse Axe. Pretty cool !

Very thurough review. One of my top 5 games ever. It’s a criminally overlooked game , if there ever was one. The development team started to work on a game after this , with some similar aspects , but I think the company was bought and the team somewhat went separate ways. I think it was going to be called something with ”Dragons” or along those lines. However ; a remake/upgrade/sequel wouldn’t be unwelcome , let me tell you.

If you're looking for the MOST *THEMATICALLY* - similar game, then I'd recommend... *ONI* . It's basically Blade of Darkness, but set in the future, and featuring hand-to-hand martial arts, as opposed to live steel. :P It's even from the same year, hell, even the same MONTH of release as BoD. Naturally, I'd recommend the Jedi Knight games, but I'm pretty certain that you've already played them, as have most people looking for a similar thrill. Whereas, Oni, on the other hand, has always fallen a bit under the radar... :P

this is the Souls-genre predecessor of Demon Souls and Dark souls 1, and a very good game at. the weapon / sword combo play is great, specially for a 2001 game. you can actually cancel animations in this game by just pressing space bar mid attack animation. its clear that the devs put alot more work on tukaram and Zoe than the other classes. i recommend everyone play as Tukaram, specially if your a beserk fan (the game has a very identical sword to guts dragonslayer and raider sword) if you want easy Mode play as Zoe. this is by far one of the most underrated games ive played, i guess in 2001 this game got put into the shadows by games like Devil may cry 1 i guess.

It's something I want to take a proper look at because the Switch version uses the textures from BladeHD which mess up a lot of the more abstract things in the game, and the gamma settings they use leave everything looking washed out. Saying that though for the majority of my footage I had the contrast settings too high (i think i notice on the last level, so it's fixed in The Abyss), so I didn't do a good job of representing the game visually and should've explained that you're just kind of left to guess how the game is supposed to look. I would want it to match old screenshots/back of the box as closely as I could if I did it now

Great video. I'm also a big fan of BoD. One thing was interesting though. You mention that you can't drop the bow. I remember an older playthrough, on the old GoG version, where I had reached the temple of Ianna without the bow and so was unable to pass the puzzle where you have to fire an arrow at the eye that closes the door when detecting you. I was shocked the game required a bow, but didn't provide one in the level. And I'm sure I didn't have one in my inventory by then, since I probably dropped it a lot earlier when I realized it was mostly useless. I hope I'm not wrong about dropping the bow, because I abandoned that playthrough since I could progress no further beyond that puzzle.

you did the exact same thing i did when i was getting footage for the unpowered sword, i was so mad to find that there actually IS a bow before the skull bow puzzle on the left side of the stair case if you go up to it, and you can get arrows from either being shot by one from the trap itself or there a few in a skeleton in the trap room. i didnt notice the first time and had to level skip to that point again just with picking up a bow earlier. To my knowledge if you level skip over temple of ianna to collect the runes afterwards, you're not privided with a bow whatsoever to shoot the triggers to get into the rooms, and arrows are a bitch to find in some of the revisits but there are quivers about

@@KowlDoogle Seriously, there's a bow in the Ianna level? How the hell did I miss it. I was sure I combed over that level. I noticed the dropped arrows at the bottom of the staricase, near the skeleton bones, but no trace of any bow. Anyway, I made sure on my recent playthrough to always keep a bow on hand. I was sure the lack of the bow in the mission was just a relic of old-school game design where they just brick your progress for the fun of it. (rofl)

Not much is told about game mechanics. Blunt weapons do bonus damage to golems and skeletons. Ianna's special attack deals far less than u would with class combos. Chop and south+north cross can be used after any attack with melee weapons. Final barbarian and knight's combos deal + 100 percent damage that equals to ult damage of weapon. U can do 3 north crosses and 3 south crosses in a row. As well as 3 chops and chaos killers. There is not a single word on elemental weps. Otherwise it's very rare and informative video in fluent and native and decent and eloquent language Almost forgotten to mention that end-game weps differ . Some pre-bis things do several swings in one ult . Grand slam deals 16 k damage in two hits while this spear of amazon's tripple 24 k spin

Level order probably matters the most to knight as he has 3 armour upgrades and some levels grant those sooner than later. The first armour upgrade can be found in his starting level. Ice Sword (not axe) is probably the best unique weapon, It has an OP special ability lol.

The amazon battle grunts sound A LOT like my FF14 character, which go off so often that it's a big part of why I don't play melee classes there haha... And the narrator sounds a lot like the narrator in the Trine series, it's almost uncanny. "the elf sword isnt for elves, it's for killing elves" this made me laugh a lot That lava level seems like it might be the worst one, reminded me of some lava levels in one of the Spyro games that gave me a hard time. Anyway, next time, please give us a little more time to read the text you put up! I'll watch whatever you decide to do next. I haven't heard of most of those games that you said are similar to this one, so you could always take a look at those.

Nice review man, you have great sense of humour. OpenGl doesn't work very well for this game. I've set it to r3dFx Voodoo1-2 and don't have (that many) problems. The fog in the Gorge of Orlok looks normal and I don't have to walk backwards in the first amazon level through that door. Anyway, with the new release, these problems should be fixed.
