I did a podcast for a bit breaking down mystery box shows and loved doing it (although admittedly it sometimes made watching feel like work the longer I did it). She was so excited for S2 of this show and her brother worked at AppleTV+ and had some interesting stories to share. I think outtie Irv might be working with the anti-sever group. They may have learned that sleep deprivation is a way to bridge a severed conscious by implanting a subconscious message, hence the loud music and staying up all night and the message is the constant image of the elevator door to the testing floor. It really was leaking through to his innie and innie Irv may have eventually gotten the picture of the door as the message, but the OT Contingency accelerated that.

I think Helena was legit surprised to find out her innie has such openly loving feelings about someone on the severed floor. She and her father have complete disdain for the innies and don't regard them as people. I think seeing the kiss made her curious because her outie is so stiff and repressed and the kiss was so validating of a different innie reality. And now she wants to know why her innie loves Mark.

I def still think its Helena down there. That being said I think its possible that only Helena knows its Helena down there. Meaning everyone at Lumen think she is going down and switching to Helly, but she has disabled her chip. She could be doing this for a couple of reasons 1. as you mentioned she could want to know what it feels like to have a relationship and she is jealous of Hellly, 2. she wants to find out what's going on and solve the issue herself for the good of the company and to impress her father and get his validation, 3. she is terrified of what Helly could do next. Understand it isn't her choice to go back down. The board ordered Helly to go back down. I'm not sure the board would want to risk sending her down as Helena because its risky. However, waking up Helly is incredibly risky to Helena because Helly would like nothing more than to figure out a way to shut Helena off for good and take over her life. Helly is all about burning the company to the ground and getting revenge on her outtie. I'd be worried if I was Helena too after the trauma of what she managed to do.

I'm saying that Burt and Irv's innies fall in love so quickly and easily because their outies have been having an affair. And because Irv is clearly some kind of secret anti Lumon crusader on the outside, he's been to the testing floor so many times for originally being so defiant. I'm willing to bet that when he first woke up at Lumon, he was even more out of control than Helly.

I laid out another theory that Irv is a former supervisor or director of security. The perspective of the hallway is that of watching someone take the elevator down not riding down it yourself, because the red light on the elevator is lit up in the painting which I think happens only once the elevator starts to go down not before you board it. Also, he has all this info on Lumon severed employees. Where is he getting that from. Maybe he stole it from work when he had access in a management position.

What do you think of this theory? I was pondering the name Cold Harbour. I wondered what Ricken would describe it as! 😜 I think he would look at the words separately and take them at face value. Cold therefore could represent being cold emotionally, the state of being cold, or a place that is cold. Harbour could be an inlet where ships can dock, or it could be used metaphorically as in a safe harbour, a place of safety. So, after all that thinking 🤔, I posit that Cold Harbour represents putting people in a place of safety which could be somehow using cryogenics. Bizarre idea I know but it's late! 😂😂😂

It could simply mean where they found Gemma. We saw in a trailer, a car in icy water and Gemma died in a car accident. If Gemma was naturally "cryogenically" frozen from accident inception, then perhaps they recovered her from there and decided to use her for their experiment to create a perfect full time employee. And Mark was needed to test how well it would work (the company ultimately needs them to not identify each other). And the burn reference could be how Gemma was presented to Mark. They turned it into an accident/explosion and replaced the body with someone else burned beyond recognition and put Gemma's ring and personal affects on that person.

I'm convinced Cold Harbor is about making Gemma dissapear completely. That situation is a loose end. She may be the only they've ever tried what they are doing on her. I think the end goal is to bring back kier eagen back to life in a way with his memories being put in a body. Theory about Ms. Huang: Initially I thought Ms. Huang was Ms. Cobell having been implanted into another person that Lumon stole after a car accident. The reason being the way Milchek seems to have a dislike of her and the way it kept cutting between her and Ms. Cobell's name on the computer screen. However, now I am wondering if Ms. Huang is actually a girl crossing guard who was hit by a car, taken from the hospital and implanted with Ms. Cobel's mother's consciousness as a test. I believe this whole revolving thing that the Lumon leader is talking about is the passing of Kier's consciousness from one generation to another. Hence some of the antiquated language he uses. ms. cobell's mother was high up at Lumon. Harmony worshipped her mother. Remember the shrine? Maybe on her deathbed they implanted her consciousness into Ms. Huang. The severance chip is to cut off the brain access of the original person and let the new consciousness take over the body. Something went wrong with the experiment and Ms. Cobell's mother's consciousness could not be activated. Hence why Ms. Cobell spent most of season one trying to prove that severance is reversible. Why else would she care soo much about this issue unless it had something to do with her mother? She clearly isn't severed. The only relative she seems to have that she cares about was her mother.

Question: Is Irv a former manager at Lumon? At first I didn't get the whole thing about his innie getting the message but then lets stop and ask ourselves. How does Irv have a list of severed employees? In addition we repeatedly see his outtie drinking coffee trying to stay awake and painting the same hall showing the elevator to the testing floor over and over. Obviously Irv has seen that hall at one point. I thought it was because he himself was sent to the testing floor and its in his subconsciousness so he paints it and doesn't sleep because he has nightmares. Now I am looking at it very differently. In the painting the down arrow on the elevator is lit up. It lights up when it goes down. That means Irv watched people take the elevator to the testing floor not getting on it himself. Watching them like a supervisor. It would explain why irv is an older employee than the others as well. irv's struggle to stay awake is to make his innie tired enough where he falls asleep and dreams. By painting the same hallway over and over again it is Irv's hope that his innie will dream of this hallway and that will trigger the innie to investigate. Hence Irv saying on the phone "his innie got the message", because Irv knows his innie woke up due to the fact he woke up at Burt's house

And the last episode of season 1 we look at Outtie Irving's investigation materials. He's doing a pretty good job. And there's last name is Bailiff. Maybe he was in law enforcement. I think he's looking to take Lumon down. He found himself on Bert's doorstep and realized his innie had been awake. He probably thinks his paintings were successful.

I agree with Jess that Irving met Bart. I think it was Irving's outie, but he is a pretty smart guy and already suspicious of Lumon, so this is one loose thread of many more to come. I think Helenia has several motives to be Helly, like you mentioned. I also think she was studying her part so she could pull off the role as Helly. I lean towards it being Helenia as Helly still. It was a great episode. I love the last scene with the scream and Ms. S almost running over Mark.

forgive me if I'm obtuse but i am so confused. did they reprogram the innies upon their return or does innie Mark still know that he and innie Gemma are/were married on the outside? if so, how the hell is that sustainable from Lumon's perspective? and do we know/have we ever known Helena Eagan's reason for choosing/accepting the severance process? I'm kind of not getting a lot of things right now i think, it's all a little too opaque for me so far this season in a way that didn't bother me in the first season because that was kind of the whole point. i feel like that doesn't bode well for this project going forward. it's giving Lost vibes to me, ie starting to become mired/bogged down in its own conceit. i hope I'm wrong

This was a great companion episode that flowed as part 2 of the premiere. Outie Irv is mysterious and we will probaly unravel for the rest of the series. Kobel will be back! Lumon portrays power, but we saw how Heleana and Milchik felt the pressure from the fall out. Although we see more convincing evidence that Helena is on the severed floor as opposed to Helly R, this seems too easy. A further twist will unfold and it is probably he rooted in Heleana and her internal struggle with who she is.

I am torn on whether it is Helly R (modified or not) or Heleana. I say that because Helena is fascinated by her innie but also repulsed. Would she able to stomach this long con of being on the severed floor? I think she may be envious of Helly R and wants to prove herself for her family and especially her father. They are making a big effort to show that Helena seems to be lonely and is curious about being an innie.

It’s 100%. Helly. Helena was so intrigued by the relationship. She is lonely as her outie and sees her innie is having a loving relationship. She wants to feel that. So why would she end it. I think she wants that life and wants to go back in as Helly to see how it progresses. Also Mark S. needs Helly to insure whatever he’s working on is completed. Why would lumen risk that by putting undercover Helena in? There are still cameras watching too.

I have my guesses too. Irving in the phonebooth saying that he got the message to an innie was in reference to his emotional close talk to Dylan about outtie details like the paintings. Maybe it was outie Dylan he was on the phone with. Burt was in the car following Irving very upset that he was trying to bust up his happy marriage, Burt's being stalked. Perhaps Irving is a deranged ex trying to figure out how to reunite with Burt by trying to follow him down the dark corridor, where Burt "retired" to much like Ms Casey did.

The Helena plot is interesting. When we first see her as Helena in this episode, she's caressing her neck, which made me think she's remembering her other jolting experience back to her outie reality when she was hanging in the elevator. She's watching security tape of her innie. Had she been watching her innie before the overtime switch incident, or just afterwards because now there are special circumstances? The kissing video does appear to have stirred something in her, but I wonder if maybe some there's already an inkling of doubt about what she's doing. Her facial expression after recording her cover story has that same look of unease.

@ We’ll see. Marc is focussed on Gemma of course. But in the background there is a bigger picture of an anti severance movement vs Lumon. Irving could be a part of that, i think. On both sides. But I don’t see why he’d lie to Milchick if he’s on Lumon’s side. Irving still raises the most questions. what happened when Burt or his husband opened the door? was it the first time he showed up at Burt's place and why is Burt following him? who are the other people on the map? this was a great episode imo. I also love the look of the show: so many gorgeous shots (like when Helly talked to Milichick and goes to the meeting room, the air shots from the motorcycle in the night, the sparsely lit faces...)

I think Rickon was referring to Mark's innie as a 'gem'. He liked that innie Mark enjoyed his book, not to mention that innie Mark is not as morose as his outer counterpart.

I don’t think that Milchik has anything to do with what Irv is doing. There is nothing to suggest that he is a mole. I think he was talking to some character that we just haven’t met yet.

Anything is possible, but I think I read that the actress playing Ms Huang, her background is Korean and the actress playing Gemma is Tibetan born in Nepal (mom) and Australian (Dad) so I don't know how her and Mark would have a Korean daughter, but this show is playing around a lot with people's minds so maybe they are altering their genetics and backgrounds as well? - Jess

this might be crazy but what if Ms. Huang is mark’s wife? In the way ppl think they’re cloning the goats, perhaps Gemma is a clone and Ms. Huang has to grow into Gemma. It goes your theory of them trying to see if a clone can become the original persons consciousness Also in the trailer she says to mark he won’t have a fairytale ending so they’ll def interact again

I thought at first she has Ms. Cobel's consciousness implanted in her but not it looks like she is just some child they tested on because it talks about him bringing her in from some other location. I still think one of Lumon's goals is to take bodies of people and implant another consciousness in them so that way people can achieve immortality and they can take over the government by hijacking politicians etc.

@MattandJessTV mostly the pace of the episode was a bit slow for me. My theory on Helena is that she was never liked or shown affection all her life, and within a few months, her innie found both love and friends. I believe this made her jealous, so she's pretending to be Haley to both find out what the others know and to know how it feels to be liked
