How long did you prescribe antifungal? Do you have patient scheduled for a follow up appointment? This was really difficult to watch. I'm a firm believer in gentian violet for fungal infections. It works well and quickly. However, it is messy and one can have to deal with a purple discoloration for a while if one is a bit sloppy with it. Or, one can make a vinegar solution of one part vinegar to two parts water and this too works without the mess. I do like the gentian violet best. I am not a physician or PA etc. But, I'm a mom and farm girl and learned a lot growing up. Good luck to your patient with his fungus among us ears.

Another case of get another doctor. You could see that's fungus all the way from the International Space Station. Good grief. I guess it's not worth your while doing the swab. I’ve learned from watching Neel and/or Connor that the fungus likes to feed on dead skin. So isn’t this also or even mainly dead skin, and might that explain the springiness? In that case the sodium bicarbonate should also help to loosen this a bit as it works well on dead skin. Just my two cents.

I'm curious: Why not use a manual tool to loosen the sides before suctioning? Wouldn't that be easier than starting with suction?

If it's deep like this, the skin is very thin and sensitive, and using tools would in my mind be an unacceptable risk of pain, catching the wall would be very painful, the skin can easily break and cause an infection
