Severe Thunderstorm in Montreal - August 4th, 2018
Severe thunderstorms that affected the SW West Island of Montreal during the late-morning to early-afternoon period.
Thunderstorms were forming in an extremely poorly sheared, but strongly unstable, environment. There was also some upstream weak lift supplied by a series of shortwave troughs to the West. SBCAPE/MUCAPE reached 2500 J/kg during the time of development, owing to dewpoints of 21-22 C, and there were marginally steep mid-level cooling rates, as well as dry mid-level air. This environment meant that thunderstorms would be moving rather slowly, but for this reason, the risk for localized flooding was increased. Locally strong downbursts of wind were also possible, and even small hail and intense lightning briefly. Because of the poor shear, however, thunderstorms were only sustained for a short-time (these were pulse thunderstorms).
Much of the first half of the video is spent highlighting distant thunder and occasional visible lightning. The thunderstorm does eventually become noisier, so, again, please use the earphones/headphones to listen in order to enhance viewing. Gradually, another thunderstorm moved over this same area. Note that supplied radar imagery for this thunderstorm is unconventionally supplied at the very end of the video to show how quickly the thunderstorm was weakening before reaching farther South and East. Severe Thunderstorm Warnings were enforced for the Valleyfield to SW West Island corridor.
Footage was taken in SW Pierrefonds, located in Montreal’s West Island. Radar imagery is courtesy of NOAA.
