Severe/Tornado-Warned Storms Bring Large Hail, High Winds & Vivid Lightning to Southern WI - 5/21/24

A Moderate Risk (level 4/5) for severe weather (including tornadoes) was issued across much of Iowa, western Illinois, and southern Wisconsin on May 21st, 2024.
We decided to chase southwestern/south-central Wisconsin, as we did not want to drive all the way to southwestern Iowa (probably wouldn't have made it in time for the main event anyways). Storms were supercellular initially, but were quick to grow upscale into lines and clusters, which is what was expected. Every storm we chased other than the final one was tornado-warned, however, the areas of rotation were almost exclusively rain-wrapped. We encountered some nice structure, as well as a brief bout of hail up to half-dollar sized, and very high winds up to 80 mph in the town of New Glarus. Overall, a pretty fun chase day!

I wound up having to pull over a couple times too while I was out after the precipitation caught up, it was like trying to drive underwater lol

I chased in Iowa this day - still didn't go far enough southwest for the tornadoes; although the expectation seemed to be for them to continue occurring further east than they did - and was repeatedly blocked by damage after getting most of the way home. This was one of the more widespread damaging wind events in recent memory for south-central Wisconsin.

Wow, glad you were able to make it home safe. Sorry you also missed the tornadoes! Yeah, apart from the initial supercells, every storm we ran into had very impressive winds. Makes sense with the kinematics that were in place that day!

Great chase! This day certainly had many curveballs. By the time it reached me, it was moving at 70 mph. Other than 5 minutes of 45-60 mph wind gusts, the worst went to my north and south. See ya in the next video!

Thank you! Yeah, I was pretty happy with the outcome of the chase, though my hopes weren't very high going into it due to the messy nature which was being forecasted.

@@weathermanofthenorth1547 at one point I clicked on a severe warning in east-central WI, and it stated the storm was moving NE at 90 mph. May have been slightly difficult to chase that one! Haha

@MidwestStormChasing Gesh! I remember the Unity tornado was moving at 80 mph, so very believeable! It was a really kinematic atmosphere too!
