Haha, this is my guitar. Black and everything. Bought it brand new yesterday. Just seeing someone (that knew what they were doing) take this apart and show me what each adjustment did, and how to put it back together, is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you very much for taking the time to make this video. Now I know why the thing wouldn't stay in tune. Fixed it, sounds effin perfect now. Huge thumbs up.

Just a friendly tip. You should never adjust the bridge height with the tension on it. When you do that it will damage the knife edge's on the tremolo system. You should always detune the guitar, take the tension off of the tremolo, then adjust the height of the screws and retune, then Repeat if the height isn't where you like it.
@CameronJohnson
@CameronJohnson 9 жыл бұрын
I agree if you have a cheaper bridge , but any decent Floyd will be just fine adjusting under tension. No need to detune your guitar.

Sorry but I don't agree When adjusting height, both parts move together, which causes no wear in that kind of movement When the knife edge is moving while the post is stationary, that's what causes the wear, so anytime the trem is moving by bending of some sort (bends, vibrato) And then using the bar for dive bombs, flutters, pitch raise, horse and all the crazy fun stuff.....that cause more wear, that's actually the blunt of the wear Adjusting string height doesn't do anything to flatten the edge, it takes a lot of abuse to flatten it Sorry dude but if that happens to you, your trem is made of cheap material Or your just a whammy monster who kills it.........if that's so, I apologise and just keep rippin \m/

The original Edge manual agrees with this advice: "To avoid excessive wear on the knife-edge pivots on the bridge, it is suggested that the strings be loosened before attempting to adjust bridge height".

@@exscape i havent read the original edge manual, but i have never seen that adjusting string height with full tension can mess up the knife edge, not even in the slightest I would say that, in this case, ibanez didnt do real world testing so it says that in the original manual, thats a very common thing for manufacturers to do (in all kinds of fields) I went to the tech support on the ibanez website and its just as i thought, they dont mention to loosen the strings cause it can cause wear on the knife edge They must of realized that what i stated earlier is true I also looked in my manual that came with my ibanez jem, and no mention of knife edge wear due to string height adjustment If anyone has any mechanical common knowledge, there is no wear on the knife edge while having full string tension and adjusting the string height.........its all caused by using the trem for what it was intended for Sorry but there is book smarts and there is real world smarts...........this is one of those real world scenerios where the manufacturer didnt know there stuff Shoot an email to tech support and find out for yourself or experiment on your own guitar to find out Dont mean to sound like a douche but there is alot of people on here that dont know jack..........just like those "steel wool is bad" peeps

I find it's much faster to feed the fresh strings through the tuning machines, over the nut with the locks off, and into the locks on the trem with the ball ends still on, to be trimmed after you have the guitar roughly tuned to pitch.

Great video and advice! I've got my tremolo all set up for when I can find a replacement bar. I'm going a little off topic here for a moment, I used to have an Ibanez Rg (270dx I believe) I could be wrong, I had it for around 2 years and it was stolen in 2001. I just picked up one used, same model and colour I believe, everything is the same except for the bridge, this one is an Slt 101. The one on my original guitar had a sleeve nut style on the bar, I'm trying to figure out what bridge that was so I can determine more information about my original guitar. It's probably a long shot, but thanks in advance!

You forgot an important detail when lowering the bridge. The studs have a small set screw inside at the bottom. This is the second "locking" mechanism. The first lock is the nut lock. Before you lower the studs you must use a small allen wrench, insert it into the studs and loosen the set screw. It pokes into the wood at the bottom, thus locking it in place. If you try to tighten the stud without doing this, you might break the top of the stud off! Set action/ retighten set screws to lock trem.

Thanks! The upper side (the part of the trem with the fine tuners) will look angled. The part you are looking to make parallel with the body is the knife edge. If you look at the bridge while it is raised up by unscrewing the trem studs, you can see a small rectangle at the base of the trem, which is there to show you the angle of the knife edge. If you can get that rectangle to be parallel with the guitar body, you will be good to go. Then, you can lower the bridge to taste.

Hay Cameron, Have you ever thought about installing the strings with the ball end on at the machine heads instead of cutting them off? then cut your strings 1 inch longer than the bridge, then bend the string over 1/4in and insert that end at the bridge. this keeps you strings from slipping. just a thought.

Yes yes of course, Ive just heard that for the period that there is no strings it can cause some damage?? I have since spoken with other people on this including a luthier and the response is No its ok because the manner in which the strings pull on a neck is linear and not lateral. Meaning your neck doesnt get folded in half basically, its more pulled from end to end in a "Squashing" manner if that helps to put into the plainest English possible

If I push the whammy bar back, it slightly pushes the whole bridge down towards the body, changing the tension between the strings and the springs and shifting the tuning about 1 semi-tone up. 1. You're supposed to put a block underneath the Floyd and cavity and take off the arm before you flip it and remove/install springs 2. There is no real "advantage" by most luthiers. In my book, if you want a simple setup without the fear of popping strings , then go for the frankenstrat setup \ / or \| | , just remember to not strip and over tighten the screws all way.

@31469jdog
@31469jdog 4 жыл бұрын
@Oğuzhan Tuna, yes. The guitar has a floating bridge and the tune is held by a perfect balance between the strings and the spring found in the back. When tuning a floating bridge guitar, tuning one string pulls the bridge upright. The bridge will continue doing this for every string that you tune. However, if you place a small block of wood between the spring plate (where springs connect to bridge) and the body, you can tune the strings without the issue bridge moving previous strings out of tune.
@31469jdog
@31469jdog 4 жыл бұрын
Oğuzhan Tuna, how many time are you stretching out the strings? You’ll need to stretch out the strings in several increments along the fret bar. Does your guitar have pitch shifters?
@31469jdog
@31469jdog 4 жыл бұрын
Oğuzhan Tuna, yes, brand new string need to be stretched several times before playing. Otherwise it will continue to come out of tune a lot during jams. I assuming that you have a floating bridge, correct? If so, then are, you leaving the block that immobilizes your bridge in?
@31469jdog
@31469jdog 4 жыл бұрын
Oğuzhan Tuna, the block is something that you’ll have to come up with. It can be a small wood block, an eraser, heck, i used a small row of staples which did the trick for a while.
@31469jdog
@31469jdog 4 жыл бұрын
Oğuzhan Tuna and once you have something that fit appropriately between the spring plate and the body you can adjust your spring tension and strings accordingly. Once everything is set, you will need to keep the block (or whatever you used) in place so that can stretch your strings. Note: you will not be able to use your tremlo arm if block is in place. That being said, you’ll have to run your hand down the neck stretching each string. Once you have done so, do a quick play through to test it, if everything is to your liking, replace locking but tuners (if you have those) at the of the neck, remove the block and you should be ready of action.

Rusty Shackleford i own one of these and let me say, with these you pretty much want to pick a tuning (any tuning) and stick with it once you set it up. if you switch back & forth between tunings on a regular basis you're better of getting a 2nd guitar with a fixed bridge. (minor changes like E to EdropD aren't to bad but big jumps like from E std to DdropC are a pain in the ass)

@CameronJohnson
@CameronJohnson 10 жыл бұрын
Sure! You need to pull up on the bar so that the springs are in the loosest position possible. Then, flip the guitar over so the trem cavity is facing you. Hold the bar in that position against your leg and use your hands move each spring, one at a time.

I know this will sound stupid (Im a drummer lol) but how do you actually remove the strings from the bottom? I got one of these for my son (2000+ Ibanez RG220B) and have no idea how to do the bottom end. I got the strings out of the top fine.

hey thnks,this vid is very helpful. I hope you read this though. while I was setting up my guitar years ago I noticd that d dstance btween d nut and 12th fret is equal to the dstance btween the 12th fret and exactly wer the string touches the bridge or simply d 12th fret should exactly be at d center of d nut and bridge. I guess d guitar will be tuned more precise if this is done, i believe. I saw at your bridge that the 3 strings are farther away. Is there are a reason why you set it this way?

The Edge bridge is considered by many to be the BEST bridge ever made by Ibanez. I prefer the Lo Pro Edge, but either one is great. Overall, it is a killer floating bridge and I would highly recommend it!
@chadwr85
@chadwr85 11 жыл бұрын
No. I have one and it's not difficult. Once you put new strings on you do some tuning, adjusting the spring tension, and hitting the tremolo in cycle until it's in tune and the bridge is even. All together it usually takes me about 30-40 minutes to replace the strings and tune it. But if you move up or down in string guage it's a time consumer.

Why can I not drop my trem low enough to match my other Prestige guitars without losing the ability to pull back on the trem bar?
@lischultz14
@lischultz14 4 жыл бұрын
I know this is old but maybe it will help someone. I think i had the same problem your describing. it was a intonation screw that was about 2 mm longer than the rest that stuck out the bottom of the bridge and would catch on the body and limit the travel of the bridge especially when pulling back on the bar. sanded the screw down so it was flush like the rest and all was fine. some how a longer screw was put in that one.

When one string is tuned higher, another goes the other way and vice versa. Say you got the e string in perfect tune, the other strings will most likely downtune or uptune, depending on which way you just tuned the e string. (It's a pain in the ass with these Floyd rose tremolos...) So most likely, you will need to fiddle around with the tremolo springs to get the correct pressure on the tremolo. The tremolo should be horizontal on the body in order to get the correct tuning.

I have an Ibanez RG570 that I've had for over a year and never been able to set up. It has been brought to Guitar Center twice, and both times, they set it up incorrectly as well. It seems that the only way to get the tremolo to be balanced on this guitar is to screw the claw in as far as it will possibly go, and even once you've done that, the trem will still lean forward a bit, like there isn't enough tension from the springs. It is the most frustrating shit I have ever seen. Is there any way to fix this issue?
@LightningJackFlash
@LightningJackFlash 8 жыл бұрын
+drgnfrc13 Sure, but I don't exactly understand what seems to be the problem. You have to set the angle of the tremolo in a way that the knives are parallel to the body. The tremolo base in case of Edge Original and LoPro Edge is constructed in a way it won't be parallel to the body when set up correctly. Or do you mean the spring tension is too little? I don't know, maybe these bridges were designed for 9-42 or at most 10-46 string sets for E-Standard tuning? Could be... I use 10-46 string set for E-Standard tuning and indeed, the spring claw is almost all the way screwed in. Maybe you use larger gauge strings? Like 10-52 or bigger for E-STANDARD? If you have too little spring tension, think about adding an extra spring, or even two.

+jack1981 Thanks for offering help, but I actually finally figured it out like a day after I posted this comment. I still don't know exactly what was going wrong, but I think it had something to do with the fact that I was starting with low spring tension, and then increasing the spring tension until I could get it parallel with the strings in tune. It seems that if I start off with maximum spring tension, I am able to reduce the spring tension to where it's balanced. It seems like it wouldn't make a difference, but somehow it apparently does. What was happening before was that I'd end up with the claw screwed in as far as it would go (i.e. maximum spring tension), and yet I still wouldn't have enough spring tension to keep the bridge from tilting slightly forward (toward the neck) once the strings were brought up to pitch. Guitar Center had done the same thing when they charged me $60 to set it up, and because of it, it would go out of tune if I even touched the trem arm, because the angle was off.
@LightningJackFlash
@LightningJackFlash 8 жыл бұрын
drgnfrc13 Yeah no problem dude, good you've finally figured it out. Indeed it sounds a little weird that it makes a difference whether you start adjusting it with claw screwed in to max. Some weird physical properties of Ibanez guitars (?) :P Anyway, I suggest that you checked out TONS of videos posted on KZbin about adjusting and maintaining a guitar, there are really some good ones, which might help you save some money. Cheers.

jack1981 I've watched hours worth of them already. Lol. I've actually been playing guitar for about 4 years now, and the RG570 was actually the second guitar I've owned with a floyd-style trem. The first time around, I had an S570dxqm, which was only my second guitar. I gave up on the S570 much more quickly because I had only been playing guitar for a few months at the time, and it was just overwhelming to try and wrap my head around the setup. I ended up returning that one and buying a string-through Schecter to replace it. As for the issue with the RG570... I don't think it's an Ibanez thing, because now I have an S5570q as well, which has a Lo-Pro, and I had no such issues when I set it up. My best guess is that something weird was going on with the springs; maybe they need to be replaced or something, because the guitar is 17 years old.

Uhm , not that I see anything it’ll hurt , but my understanding is the lemon oil isn’t a cleaner , its the conditioner you use after cleaning the fretboard ...the cleaner dries out the board and lemon oil conditions it back to life.

Lemon oil is too acidic, it’s terrible for a fretboard. It will strip the natural oils out of the fretboard wood. Music nomad has fretboard oil made from wood and nut oils, it’s much better than lemon oil.
