I have always thought that Snape saw Harry as the son he never got to have with Lily. That's why he cared for Harry so much more then what was necessary and made sure even as he drew his final breath that Harry knew not only truth about him but what Harry needed to do to stop Voldemort from winning.

Snape and lily never had a romantic relationship of any kind thats why harry is James and lily’s only. But thats not the point. Snape’s one sided love is the whole reason he pur himself through all this pain. Snape loved her since they were kids even when she married his worst enemy and had his son. And through her over the years he came to care abt harry who had her mother’s eyes as a son as well.
