When you love someone like that...and lose them... Everytime he seen Harry it was a trigger and emotionally tormented n tortured him. Harry was his only reason to live--only because he loved Lily and she died to save Harry therefore snape is bound by that devotion to Harry's protection up to and with his very life. Always. ♾️

Yes to all that but he also had to be mean. Voldemort probably looked into his mind frequently and so he couldn't ever showed that he'd care.
