Its a great catch and not even close to an accident for sure. They were trying to translate and idea that comes up in the books several times. And that is when Harry gets the and I quote "distinct" feeling that Snape can read his thoughts. Interestingly enough in the 5th book, Snape attempts to teach Harry how to lock people out of his mind so Voldemort cant see Harrys thoughts anymore. I love Snape. His character has an insane amount of depth and the story would not be the same without him.

It's about a boy wanting to learn about his dad and since he's only told the good things, he begins to think his dad was some kind of saint. So of course when somebody he doesn't like to begin with brings up some negative stuff about his dad, Harry immediately thinks he's lying. Btw. I still think that Rowling missed the opportunity actually showing us anything of the good side of James Potter. Everyone just keeps talking about how awesome he was, but all we actually know is that he was dumb enough to leave his wand lying around the house when the most dangerous wizard in existance was looking for him all over the place. So I gotta admit, James left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth after the last book, because we never actually see his redemption. The last few things we learn about him personality-wise is how much of a dick he was to Severus as a kid and that he was partially to blame for ending his and Lily's friendship. With Snape and Dumbledore we actually see them turn over a new leaf and do good. With James it's just never adressed. I know he probably was a decent guy in the end, but from a narrative standpoint, it's never shown. Hell, Draco gets more redeeming moments than James tbh.

I actually had a science teacher who asked me a question while I finished making notes on what he just said. Because I was writing I asked him to repeat the question (I would've known the answer because I just wrote the notes). Well he didn't repeat it, instead he made me stand up and said 'If you don't want us all to think you're stupid then maybe you should actually pay attention'. I said I was just making a note, got hour detention for answering back. Humiliated for trying then punished for my valid explanation, 10/10 teaching there. And people wonder why I have such big problems with authority.

@@loucifer1601 So did I, already mentioned my science teacher but I also had a woodwork teacher who simply hated me. I'd get detention almost every lesson for the tiniest thing (like drinking water while stood next to a computer). It's given me really bad attitude towards authority and an irrational and pathological belligerence. Think I'd automatically turn down a million pounds/dollars/euros if someone ordered me to have it. Funny thing is, almost 7 years later and I'm now massive compared to this guy, and a few of my freinds are bigger than me. Once saw him walking down a path we were on one evening, I know he recognised me because I could see the terror in his face. Fortunately I'm not that kind of person, the fact I made him shit himself just by standing there was enough satisfaction. I know a guilty face when I see it. They are just petty minded, probably too many little shits taking the piss out of them throughout their career so now they're assholes with their power. Pity them. Snape is badass tho, if any of them were like him (actually looking out for me) then I'd obviously feel different.

You mean like straight up bullying students and making it a point to inject negativity into others' lives....His only redeeming quality as a teacher was that he knew the material very well. But it shouldn't even have to be said that being very skilled in something doesn't make you a good teacher in that area. One single mistake could cost you dearly, just like what often happened to Seamus Finnigan: the spell would blow up in his face. It's especially true for potions, as one mistake would turn it into poison. That negativity was actually him telling the students to focus and no horsing around, because otherwise they'll either kill someone else or themselves.

Going out of your way to insult students, including for non academic things, and being intentionally hurtful instead of helpful is not what being a teacher is about. This isn't even a complicated observation. Snape is a smart man who wrote potion recipes on the board and then spent the rest of his time bullying the students.

@Jaden Yuki I'm not forgetting anything about his past. Nothing about that negates anything I said. It's pointless to "what if" when you can literally "what if" an infinite amount of possibilities that lead characters in an infinite amount of directions. The reality in this story is what we have, and the reality is that Snape was a terrible person. In fact, his deeds weren't fundamentally good. His actions revolved entirely around his obsession for a single person. And he would have done anything, good or bad if it supported his obsession of her. Snape's life is a tragedy. It's sad. You can sympathize with him. You can understand him. But calling him a good person, let alone teacher is wrong.
