I feel so bad for Snape, firstly his whole childhood was practically horrible and his only friend and person he loved was Lily. What made it worse was that Lily ended up with James instead of him (i love Jily btw) and that most definitely hurt him a lot since James bullied the hell out of him. God, the devastation when she was killed too only leaving behind Harry. Honestly the Patronus scene was so well done by the producers and it really showed how Snape still loved Lily and deep down he cared about Harry.

Looking back, Lily was probably the only person he ever loved or had a connection with. So, Snape went his entire life with Lily being the only person he ever cared about and he never became more than friends with her.
