I really need to talk my Dad into getting us one of those canoes! Thanks for showing us your method of finding and repairing a leak. My Dad and I also watched this one together and he says Hi. Taylor

Thanks for the comment. Sevy' Col' @ £200 = result! espesh if it was brand/near new. My 2008 version retailed for £300, can get them cheaper depending on dealer or added kit e.g paddles etc. Not enough space to go into here but: able to swim with clothes on, always recce get ideas of areas to safely put in/navigate i.e. google earth/maps, hard copy maps etc to assess where to go. Expect to portage around locks on certain rivers. Know how to read water currents. End of day - enjoy :-) Cheers

Sorry to hear about the issue with your inflatable. I have a Sea eagle 370 inflatable, a very good boat. Great convenience having a inflatable. Thanks for sharing..

Yes the chambers are far more sturdy/thicker/reinforced than the Colorado bladders hence more expensive. Plus the overall shape is slightly wider at stern & bow. A good expedition canoe/kayak on the next level, shame they don't come in green or brown. Thanks for the likeing. Cheers.

Hi Mindwiseman, the soap solution will work better as it will produce more/better bubbles when sprayed onto the surface of the bladder, it will help with leaks that are harder to find than using just water as it will produce massive bubbles similar to the sort of toy bubbles that kids play with when they blow through the hoop. I would have thought it will save a lot of time to especially with the very slow punctures.

I had a similar problem with a Thermarest sleep mat. I let the air out and mixed up some locktite and put around the seam ,let it dry for 24 hours. That was about 5 years ago and never had a problem since.

@CdnLifeguard71 Thanks Nate, yes the computer's still not quite right but will do for the time being. Canoe = 2 seater. Usually go solo with my dog. Plenty of space for kit. Have used canoe - 2 people, dog, kit/food for 3 days riverbank living, obviously you need to assess equal balance and positioning of load. Some of the island wildcamp vids show examples of canoe load for 2 or 3 days. All the best.

@saradreaming Thanks Sara, yes inflatable bits of kit are quite convenient/light in a lot of respects but do need to be one step ahead regarding making sure they perform, maintained & always having a repair kit on hand & ready. Got back OK and the ol' faithful canoe has been OK since as I was out & about in it the past few days. Computer's still not quite right due to slow RAM...mind you that deflates me far more than repairing the canoe :-)) Catch up again soon via yours & my vids. Take care

Hey that's good to know they've sorted the hull floor valve...about time too. Presume they're all screw Boston valves. All they need do now is re-manufacture the side bladder seams into lap overs, would get rid of 90% of deflation probs. Lake District - nice one, get in there :-)
@MINDWISEMAN13 жыл бұрын
@sjacko1066 Defineately something to consider detergent/water spray bottle, do you think it will work better because it is a thicker solution. May take longer to flow/cover surface. Will give it a trial run. Thanks for the comment - Cheers!

Specced at: level 3 rapids/water flows, coastal paddling. Inflatables don't track the water as good/efficiently as hard shells so taking it out on coastal sea = safety priority needs to be considered. As far as I know St Ives can be quite prone to small tidal waves in & out from the cliff coast so unless paddler is proficient I'd think twice about it. It really is down to the knowledge/abilties of canoeist regarding tidal, coast & rapid navigation. Inflatables in general - it's good entry level

@tullysika After this repair on return home also had to repair leak in my lilo style inflate mat. Fatigued around the flex seams, patching it didn't do the job so had to gunk it up with slodges of rubberised glue, ok now. Good your Therma's still performing.

@ThePanzer6969 Heyup m8, I inflate pressure (don't trust guage) to finger or thumb press suface 1" deep with a spring back of the baldder. One of those things where you get used instictively to the feel of the surface pressure & by feel/look. New version of Sevy' Col' seat aren't as firm back as the original, I don't have a prob with back support as mine's older type - firmer. Also inflate front floor cushion (built into floor) to rest feet on for better ergonomic support. All the best!
@MINDWISEMAN13 жыл бұрын
@tullysika Adhesive did the job - nice one.
@MINDWISEMAN13 жыл бұрын
@mellerbeck Ha yes it can be like that. Once you get the deflation and appropriate folds in place it's quite compact. Will be featured in the eventual canoe full review. Cheers

@ThePanzer6969 Heyup m8, I don't use guage I press thumb 1" into inflated surface to get a firm spring back. Sort of instinctive feel/look to know the right pressure. New version of Sevy' Col' seat isn't as firm back rest as older type. Mine's supportive/thicker older type and the whole seat velcro/staps on to floor cushion so no probs there. I inflate front cushion built into floor - as foot support to keep ergonomic support whilst paddling. All the best!!

@sjacko1066 Will give it an experimental trial run this wk/end, obviously I won't puncture the canoe 1st :-) will use spare air pillow. The thing that plain water would benefit is it's easier to hear where the air is escaping from because water is thinner and gives less resistance to the air escape, so you could hear it before seeing it which is what happened when I did repair in this vid. I try to use items I already have for other uses but worth considering carrying detergent spray. Cheers!

Hey Pete! What we air boaters don't want to encounter: wobbly chambers and hissing sounds. But with a good fixing set and some basic skills you're good to go again. ... tricky spot right next to the binding - the manufacturer should be looking into better lasting method of joining the two pieces. Wish you no more wobbly bits on your trips except those created by the waters. :o) Tim

@chefslot Nice idea to make your own hull cover. It needs to be a close fit like a glove or else water will well up and bulge in between the bladder & canvas surfaces & create a reall heavy drag when paddling. My floor is inflable "I" beam floor i.e. length ways tubullar bladder. Will check out your canoe. Cheers m8.
@MINDWISEMAN13 жыл бұрын
@steintanz Heyup Tim, you're right - wobbling, hissing, deflating bits & bobs can be a bit of a grinde but always being prepared with skills does the job :-) Yes the manufacturers should amend or strengthen the design of the 2 piece bonding like they do with more robust RIBs whereby the seam is flattened and double seam bonded. I'll defineately take care of future wobbly bits on my travels my friend LoL :-) and look forward to it being just the waters. Enjoy your future paddling. Cheers Pete

Nice video buddy. Thanks for making this. I'm looking at this boat or the Hudsen. Tough decision. The H is bigger but I understand folds a little at the front (bow??) and leaks more frequently than the Col. I think I'll get the same model as you. Lots of bargains to be had :)

Great video: I'm looking because I just bought a new Colo, went out on a canal today, floor chamber deflating (and this has the Boston valve), tried it in the dry with no pressure on it, and ensuring the 2 threads on the valve are tight - still deflating. So I dunno - do I insist on my consumer rights and just return it as not fit, or as I'll be likely be in this position again in a year or 2, just get on and find what's wrong. I wonder how I get that floor chamber out - check your other vids...

What material is the bladder made of? (I've looked up current colorados, but they don't seem to have removable bladders like yours.) I am particularly interested to know how well contact adhesive works on the PVC of e.g. a sevylor colossus. And, how well has that patch lasted??
@MINDWISEMAN10 жыл бұрын
Bladders - PVC, Colorado bladders insert in the actual nylon canvas hull covers i.e. zips each end to get access to side ones, zip on floor behind rear seat to get to I beam base. Acquired mine 2008, no probs except for manufactured seam of side bladders getting pin hole leaks on the join (as in this vid) - had 6 repairs which work best with a blob of multi use Sure Seam glue. I'm awaiting a PVC type paint which I'm going to apply along the whole length of the 2 bladder seams to strengthen & resist pin hole leaks along all the seams ( will do a full review on the process). Providing a flexi sealant is used with patches the repair shouldn't split/re leak like this one did.
@johnbrady666610 жыл бұрын
MINDWISEMAN Thanks. Given that pvc glues work by dissolving the pvc so that the molecules can move around and intertwine to form a chemical weld, perhaps you should be careful to first test that the pvc paint you use does not excessively weaken them seam. But it's probably fine - if nothing else, things like coglan's airstop have a bunch of extra pvc molecules in it so that once the solvent has evaporated you are left with a thicker collection of pvc molecules. btw, i've heard a couple of times of making Airstop equivalent by chopping up pvc scraps and dissolving them into some plumbers pvc glue (which is, afaik, almost pure solvent). So how long did the contact adhesive last? I did some tests (see some of my videos), and the contact cement seemed pretty good, but I was able to peel it off with enough tugging.
