Mark Strand, our one time poet laureate died today and I came to this KZbin page to hear him read; in his voice, with his feeling, with just the amount a drama he wanted to impart in the moment. He starts this reading showing his rare capacity to bring more life to life. He takes untouchable concepts like "non-being" and gives it life in language in such a way that the idea could be felt and known. In so doing, Mark transforms the terror of perishing into a fear we could handle, like meeting a stranger. Quite a feat! Around the 15th minute, introducing the second part of his reading, with a quote from my favorite author, Dickens, he introduces us to his poem, "Harmony in the Boudoir." There are few moments indeed where married life is depicted with such fine insight and delightful humor. Long life to our artists who help us see the unseen and feel beyond our limits. Long live Mark Strand's spirit.

Poets should really learn how to read their poems properly. It's a real shame because otherwise the poetry is lost, and you go to something else. A poem is a drama, and should be represented as such, with dramatic expression, and not as if you were marching in a band. And this I have seen even in famous poets, which I hadn't expected. Well.
