Great video! My favorite parts are EVERYTHING up to creating the quilt sandwich which I really hate. I don't even mind the quilting as much - it's just wrestling with the batting and the backing and the basting! I don't even mind the binding. I'm like you - I love cutting, piecing, squaring, and creating the quilt top. I have a LOT of tops folded up, waiting for the quilting process. If a quilt is one I really love, or is special in some way, I'll send it out to the long-armer, but to keep this hobby (which can become expensive) a little more managable financially, I do most of my quilting myself on my domestic machine.

Hi. Instead of gaging where to turn on expanding square use a cross drawn lines to the corners and the filling in 1/4 at a time use a middle drawn line each direction. These lines are where to stop needle to change direction. Lovely designs.

Your walking foot has a metal bar that goes in that hole on the side of the walking foot. You adjust that for the straight line stitching. You can use it for circular sewing also. I saw the hole in the foot.

I agree with hat spray basting is expensive. I use washable glue basting ( Elmer's School glue). It adheres well. Needle passes through easily and it all washes away after quilting. At a fraction of the cost I love it.

To help with drag, I like to have the side to your left rolled up as I quilt. I find it easier to move and it's easy to unroll as you go. I have used clips like Dritz Quilter's Roll Clips to clip the rolled portion. (Sorry, I couldn't post an image.) Sometimes I will also roll the part that's on my lap/over your shoulder, although not clip it. My favorite part is doing the top; although I also like hand-quilting I don't have the stamina or patience for it anymore.

My favorite part is probably piecing but if I’m being honest I love all of it. I do sometimes struggle with my OCD when it comes to quilting on my domestic machine. I’ve mostly done straight line quilting and some with decorative stitches but if my lines aren’t perfectly straight I get frustrated. I watched this video a couple times and hearing you say, ‘I’m not going to stress about it.’ and ‘I’m good with that.’ Made me really think about what I was doing. I guess every now and then I need to hear others say the things that I forget to say to myself! @sewbeitquilts Chatterbox Quilts on youtube. "Make Quilt Basting Spray" is the name of the video. I have used washable school glue also. When I used the school blue I only quilted a sample and then I washed and dried it to see how well I would like it and it turned out well also. I think the homemade spray base is more economical and it is easy to apply. One recipe was enough for a queen size quilt and a thirty" by forty" wall hanging.

My favorite way to quilt mine is free motion quilting. I feel constrained if I have to do straight lines so my walking foot has never been used. I used to call myself a Top Gun quilter...I feel the need, the need for speed, LOL. My machine currently is a Janome Horizon Memory Craft 8200 Special Edition. I have quilted most of my pieces with straight lines using walking foot and the little bar that you push into it's side. The bar rides along your last line and fits on both sides of your foot. I've also used a wavy line on my small Brother (computer) machine. My fav part though is piecing the top!

My least favourite part of making a quilt is sandwiching and basting, basting is a bit better since I discovered 505 spray. My favourite part is sewing on the binding. I do one side by machine and the other by hand. I quite enjoy hand quilting even though I’m not the best, I find it very relaxing. I always practice for 5-10 minutes on a scrap to get my rhythm going before I start on the actual quilt. When machine quilting I like to use the metal seam guide bar that slots into my walking foot to measure the spaces between quilting rows. It means you only need to mark one or two stitching lines, you can even use it on curves or wavy lines and you can get the space exactly the size you want. Like you I always start at the same side when machine quilting lines. I find it stops puckering and pulling on the back of the quilt, which I get if I go up and down. This year I’d like to try and get the hang of FMQ, my new machine has a stitch regulator so my stitches should be the same length and that was what always put me off. I hate uneven stitches.

I hand sewed my first binding on recently and it was so relaxing! I may not do that for all of them but I think I will again from time to time. I do have that metal bar too, but mine is held in place by a tiny screw and it never gets tight enough to keep the bar even. Maybe there is a trick to it but mine hasn’t worked for me. I can see how it would be really helpful if I could keep it even!

My bar was not tight on my machine so my husband cut a piece of plastic straw and used about a quarter of the round of the straw in the space with the bar. Now it stays in place. Hope this helps someone.

Basting is my least favorite as well. I use the 505, however haven't found a method that I can get the backing tight enough. I only sew across, never across and down, because the backing will pucker. I have found that I do like straight line or a wavy line or wavy interlocking random lines. If doing straight lines, I use the guide that came with my walking foot.

I really like the wavy line quilting technique and use it especially on bigger quilts. I do have problems with forgetting which direction I was heading in when I need to stop to adjust my quilt. I completely dread making a quilt sandwich, especially if I've had to piece a backing! Ohhh how I love 108s! I've done a wavy type matchstick on a table runner that came out awesome! I'm hand quilting a lap/twin quilt and a table runner with almost big stitch straight line quilting. Other than that, it's straight on my domestic,but trying to follow peaks and simple straight lines with a variation of widths and / or directions. This was great! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!! I too cannot afford to pay a long armer. Even though I REALLY want to. The one I learned first and is the easiest for me is a STRAIGHT STITCH 1/4" away from my seam lines on both sides. I've done it on a handful of quilt tops and small projects and looks very nice. I have a 16" block that I just finished. I think I will use your "V" technique on that one. Just to practice on. 😉 And I have done the wavy lines only one time. That too was also very nice quilting and very fun to do so.

High-Five that intro to this video!!! I am with you when it comes to completely completing my quilts….love, Love, LOVE piecing! Great tips to try! I do love the result when I did crossing-hatching on 3 quilts on my domestic machine. Now I am trying to quilt one I have had for (embarrassed to say) 12 yrs hanging in a closet. lol. I want to try a different pattern as cross-hatchling was a job for me to set up. I tried painters tape and I tried using that “bar” that goes on the back of my walking foot, I still didn’t stay on the lines. Maybe I should look at your rulers. That looks pretty easy! Thank you for sharing

Don’t be embarrassed! You will get to that quilt when it’s the right time! I can’t get that dang bar to work for me either. It seems like it moves around. I can’t get it tight enough to stay in place.

Right there with ya. Love tops cannot stand putting them together. The quilting to me is so hard on larger than baby quilts

I hear you on the longarmer piece…it could add up! I’m trying to get mine done this year too, but am paralyzed with ideas. This is helpful, even for quilting on my longarm!

This process is portrayed well. Its not just awkward but tiring on the arms. However, thats how it goes! Ive moved fom making large uilts ti making mini quiltetttes. These are more challenging as far as the piecing goes, which is goid at raising ones game. Quilting is then another challenge in other ways! 😅 But this us why I do it..to meet challenges while creating beautiful things. As do all patchworkers and quilters! Great videoexpressing a lot of what lies behind the quilts we make add give away. Or sell, in some cases. Even leaving our quilts to those working the large longarms requires their very different skills that need to be acknowledged. Thank you for this video.
