Stretch in garments is important for functional wear such as comfort moving your arms.
@MichelleSewsAgain2 жыл бұрын
Hi Teresa - thanks so much! I've gotten such good feedback on this question - it's very. helpful!!
@pmclaughlin41112 жыл бұрын
Imade the Emilie when it was still called Yoko...on fact I am wearing one right now...The leopard would be fabulous... I've done shirts like this with less than the recommended stretch...First problem...getting it over your head...In general, with a good pattern, you need the recommended stretch to get it over your head..so first place to check...the next place to gauge f you need the stretch is upper bust ...a stretch will "relax" whereas a woven can ripple, bubble up, and wrinkle as you move. Next place is across the upper back-In a woven there will be more ease there for when you reach forward-the knit mean it is less ease...For the waist, it is more of what you said-negative ease or not-At the hip, the woven might roll up when you move but the knit won't unless it is loose enough all the way around ... You also need to check the bicept width...and remember to bend your arm...Even in knit, a lot of patterns don't include enough bicep space-Again, knits give, wovens bind You can make adjustment to use a woven for a knit. Generally, the easiest way to do that is to size up (doesn't always work for pulling it over your head) ...One caveat, a a plus size myself, even when I size up, I keep the shoulder length the smaller size

Wow! This is excellent feedback! Thank you SO much! Very helpful 😀❤️

This is great advice. To me it looks like the main issue with the emilie would be in the sleeves - looks like they might have negative ease (or at least not enough wearing ease for a fabric with less stretch).

Great suggestions Michelle. I would go with the yellow for the spot fabric and I’d have the stripes going horizontally YES!!!! It’s a fallacy that fuller figured ladies can’t wear horizontal stripes. I ALWAYS go finished garment measurements, and to ensure a neat fit over shoulders I use my upper bust and if necessary FBA and/or grade up. I think they require the stretch so that you can pull the garment over your head and body and of course cuffs too. Love the cream cloque fabric but I’m not sure it would be stretchy enough for your intended make. I do love a bit of animal print though. Can’t wait to see your make and yes this is a great way of finding new vloggers. I was an official vlogger last year and now we have twice as many……..❤️

@patriciadoherty4642 жыл бұрын
Hi Michelle The reason they include the percent of stretch is for the fit and ease of putting the garment on. Also, that stretch is what the pattern makers used to make the garment. You may get away with using less stretch by increasing the size, but you need make sure your head and arms can go through the holes without being bound. Negative ease is just what it sounds like - less ease. The stretch of the fabric makes it easier to get into the garment. I hope this helps. Patricia
@MichelleSewsAgain2 жыл бұрын
Hi Patricia - thanks for the info. I knew that negative ease meant the final size of the garment would be smaller than your body measurements. That's why I didn't understand why stretch mattered on garments where it was obvious that there was NO negative ease. But I've heard from many that said the same thing you did - it's about getting in and out of the garment, i.e. the neckline, the arms, etc. That makes complete sense to me. I appreciate the education!! 😊
@MariSews2 жыл бұрын
I love that you’re thinking about using the white. Some patterns that don’t have negative ease require stretch for you to be able to get into it. That neckline looks like it’s gonna need to be able to give a bit to get your head through. I’ve questioned the same thing and made a “loose turtleneck” and ended up with a neck situation that is a bit too snug (armholes too)
@MichelleSewsAgain2 жыл бұрын
A few people have mentioned that - I can't believe it didn't occur to me! Makes total sense! Then I don't think I should use the white 😫

For the everyday dress - a belt makes all the difference, IMO. Also Sara from Sewing Therapy has a really neat oversized gathered sleeve hack for it that is really cool. I plan to participate and I think the Paddington top, but not sure which fabric yet.

I love all your fabrics. I do think the Mood top combo looks very similar to the tiered dress you showed with the dot fabric. But the dot fabric was beautiful, that needs to be made up and not remain hidden away in stash. I make knit tops with lower stretch than recommended IF the pattern has a relaxed fit or generous ease. Sometimes its really only the neck binding that needs the extra stretch and recovery. That is only my opinion, I'm sure others will say I've only been lucky so far. I love that this event is leading me to so many new to me podcasters, like you. I'm determined to have my lovely sewing podcasters out number my son's annoying gamer idiot podcasters on my YT feed.

You’re welcome, I hate that they’re trying to scam people and wreck genuine accounts. I think they might’ve given up on yours because I message saying I knew it wasn’t you and not the account can’t be found! You may be able to recover it now 🤞🏽x
