You should totally consider making flaps for the pockets, so water doesn't seep into the pockets 👍 also this project is so exciting

You can pin raincoat fabric because the seam allowances are inside the coat so you just pin on the seam allowance it will be fine. When I cut items on my cutting mat if the pieces are too large I just cut everything that’s on the mat, then I slide it down under my fabric layout to the next section and cut that part.
@Rockapella66 Жыл бұрын
Two suggestions. For the pockets, have the "back" edge of the pocket slit overlap the "front" edge and close with a snap. This helps prevent water getting in. For the hood, my raincoat also has a big, wide hood, but there is a snap at the neck to keep it secure in the wind. It ends up being just below the chin. Might be a good way to solve your hood problem. I'm so excited to see the final product!!

What a gorgeous fabric ! My friend Maureen Vinot (a magnificent creator of whimsical fairy witchy clothes!) made me a bright turquoise raincoat years ago and people are so unused to seeing pretty raincoats that I always get tons of compliments on it ! She did alter her usual coat pattern to create an overlap, and a drawstring in the hood and it’s perfect :) and turquoise 🖤 I’m sure your pink raincoat is going to be a head turner ! Yeah for pretty raincoats !

You may just fold the outside hem of the cape inside and make a tunnel for a string, I have this sort of cape on my (pink :D ) softshell coat and it's fine. If you plan to ride a bike in that, you may consider to add sort of a vizor (peak? prostě kšilt :D ) on top of the cape. Some children raincoats have them, so maybe you can use pictures of them to adjust the cape.

I absolutely adore that fabric! ❤️ For the cutting I would have just put some pattern weights (you just need the right amount of them) and simply cut using a pair of scissors, skipping the tracing of the pattern pieces. Don’t know if it’s the best method but that’s what I do many times when I don’t want to pin the pattern pieces to the fabric. If you are careful enough, there shouldn’t be problems. I didn’t buy a cutting mat and a rotary cutter because I couldn’t find one big enough to work for me and they also were pretty expensive. I used scissors and pattern weights and it worked ok for me :)
@flagerdevil Жыл бұрын
I find that so hard to do! Especially when there are a lot of details and corners. It's like either the pattern moves around on me where I'm cutting, or the weights are sitting so close to what I'm doing that there is no more space for me 😆🤷

I can't wait to see how this turns out. I've used that sealing tape before. Make sure you don't use high heat and use a tailor's clapper or something similar after ironing it on. It helps a lot.

The pockets need a flap, to keep rain from running into them, often there are snaps on the flaps for securing them closed. You may also want to increase the overlap on the front, makes it more waterproof. Love that you have the tape to seal the seams!

For the hood, you could create a small channel out of the lining fabric that sticks out maybe 1 cm, sandwiched between the hood lining and hood outer. Then, put a sinching cord through it. That way you can kinda tighten the hood around your face but the hood will still stand out and keep its shape. The raincoat hoods that I've had with this have stayed on quite well. Some raincoats have them in the hood hem, but I find those don't work very well or look nice.
@Nasalkeihpos Жыл бұрын
A shimmery rose raincoat sounds amazing! Take it slowly, you only get to sew once here ❤️ for the hood, you could add a drawstring? That’s what my raincoat has! It lets me draw it close when it’s raining heavily and windy but when it’s only a misty rain I get the pretty hood look. Having made a good all of twice, either attach the hood lining to the coat lining and the hood outer to the coat outer, or make the hood and trap it between the lining and outer layer of the coat. I’ve done each thing once and I don’t know what’s better!

Just adorable! Personally I dislike hoods that are permanently attached; I want a collar that will turn up and button snuggly against my neck to keep out the wind, and then the hood over that. Buttoned on (like your winter coat) is fine as long as there's sufficient overlap. Drawstring around the face to keep it snug. I hate having a hood flapping behind me as I bike, so when it's not actually raining I fold it and store it in a pocket.

I have bougth and used pretty cheap woven viscouse fabric to use as lining. It is not sold with that intent but comes in more interesting patterns than most lining fabric. And if the coat always is going to be worn with a belt you could have made it with a waist seam so the fabric puzzle went easier.

When we learned to sew at school we always had to trace with pen on the fabric and were never allowed to cut more than one layer of fabric at the time. Patterns didn't come with seam allowance so you also had to measure and trace that. We also had to copy the pattern (which came on large thicker paper) unto thin paper, cut that thin paper copy out, before even getting to the fabric. Now thinking about it, it's no wonder so many people/kids hated those classes...

Pink sparkly raincoat is something that will brighten many days! I hope it will turn out great. But looking at that winter coat it for sure will. I think I need winter coat in this style, because I have boxy one and while it's fine with slimmer things, I don't wear them that often (bought it because I liked that it was 80/20 wool/nylon with viscose lining, without any poliester that I absolutely hate and the reason was that my beloved 15 years old coat was too small and I needed something quickly, it was cold and wearing long sleeve top, 2 jumpers and thin jacket didn't work for too long. It still has good life in my mum's closet 😂) Shape like this would be way more useful. And the length is perfect too. Both as a winter coat and raincoat. I need to check this pattern out.
@annekecaramin Жыл бұрын
As someone who chronically buys too litte fabric because I somehow still think 2 meters is enough for everything after almost 15 years of sewing: if your fabric is going to be a squeeze, look at your pattern pieces and see what can be cut out of something else. Things like pocket bags, inside waistbands or some facings aren't going to be visible and can even be a way to add a fun little detail. I sometimes even get small pieces of beautiful printed cottons just to use them as pockets in basic jeans.

Just FYI I've sewn raincoats before and in a woven fabric pinning it shouldn't be a problem. The pins will slide between threads and any hole should close back up completely when you remove the pins. Vinyl type fabric is a different story though! Don't ever pin that.

That winter coat is a perfect colour for you! I would call the pink fabric a sheen rather than glitter, the white lining is going to show splashes and mud very quickly. The fabric needed ironing before cutting. And your layout is wasting fabric. Pin in the seam allowances - remember your heels will see through the fabric! Not wanting to sound mean ..... My Grandmother raised me and she was a society tailoress .... I would rather help you because I dearly love to see a young woman sewing!
