As per your request at the end, you can add what’s called a “waist tape” into the inside of the dress that will shift some of the weight from the shoulders to the waist. I’m not a historical dress expert by any means, but I think if you just tack some 1” wide cotton twill tape to the waist seam and then sew on a few hook and eye closures, it will really help take some of the strain off the weaker strap seams while you’re wearing it. Hope this gives you an idea and well done on your beautiful new dress!

I was about to tell her the same thing. In many of Abby Cox's videos where she looks at antique clothes, there are many examples of a stay tape or a waist tape sewn inside garments. (People were *NOT* smaller in the past (video) time stamp 8:16.) They are sewn into skirts the same way they are sewn into tops, and that is, tacked down at the seams and a couple of hook and eyes. It takes the strain off of the fashion fabric and the stay tape acts as the true waistband, holding the weight of the skirt around your waist.

Oh my gosh yes you are so right! It makes a huge difference to approach a project as a learning experience instead of “skipping to the good part” as you put it. It has literally taken me years to slow down and stop cycle skipping and ending annoyed with subpar results 😂.
@SewSewDrew Жыл бұрын
I’m still working through that myself!!! We will get there. I think our culture has a lot to do with it. In previous generations when everything took longer they were used to waiting for results. We get instant ones but I think they got better ones. Better food, better clothes, most things made are just much better when made slow. ♥️ I have sorta been rushing through my current project so I’m glad you left this comment.

Absolutely Stunning! I agree a waist stay definitely! I would have lined it, especially the bodice. I grew up in the 1950s and early '60s and dresses such as yours always used a light weight crinoline under them to support the full skirts. They are easy to make and if you're a really serious vintage clothes wearer then you'll need one to get the full effect of that fabulous skirt. Many dresses of that era had them built in. Good luck with your channel and I'm definitely looking forward to watching you as your journey through vintage dressing progresses! Best wishes Lovely Lady!

Sew belting (as though you were making a waistband for a skirt) into the waistband, with hook and eyes to support the weight of the skirt. So it's like having an interior belt. Many 1950s dresses and sewing patterns have this feature.
