I'm making this right now. This is my first project using a serger. Also my first time making something with set-in sleeves. I'm really excited to see how it turns out! It's getting late and I don't want to make mistakes, so I'm stopping for the night. Because I've never done sleeves before, I had a moment of panic when I realized that the sleeves were smaller than the armscye. I was happy to find this video and see that you stretched them to fit. Such a relief! The first sleeve is in and it looks fine. Silly me is using a solid-color fabric, so every mistake is going to show. But, so far so good!

Thank you for inspiring a new generation of sewists. Although the marking of the center of the sleeve cap with a notch is a great idea, how do you know if the sleeve is right or left? The front and back of sleeves are usually a different shape. Unless this pattern doesn’t differentiate front from back.

So cute Diana! I love working with DBP. I don’t have a cover stitch machine so my two favorite ways of hemming are rolled edge for hems that need flow and surging the edge, turn up 1/2 inch and go over the surged edge with my twin needle from the top.
@dale34043 жыл бұрын
I like to serge the edges, too, but don’t have the best luck with the twin needles, The fabric tunnels. Any suggestions?

I had issues with tunneling the 1st time I tried the twin needle and decided it was a total fail. Then I decided to try stitching directly over the surged stitches from the top. No more tunneling. I will typically baste my turned up hem right on the edge of the surge line giving me a guide as it’s difficult to see or feel with some fabrics.

Love the dress but Pockets would be so appreciated. I don't understand why pockets just aren't an option more often in women's clothing. It is so easy if you don't want them (you just don't cut them out) but they would be something I would add if I were to make this dress.
@lenam21143 жыл бұрын
I totally get where you’re coming from, but for this particular fabric it wouldn’t work because it would stretch out when carrying heavy rhings like your phone, and then the dress really wouldn’t look nice anymore
@eloiseezra51943 жыл бұрын
yes, I do love pockets and pockets are so possible with this make but as Lena mentioned, they tend to stretch down this type of dress when you put anything in them so that is why I left them out on this one. I made this dress with pockets before and I barely use them now because as soon as I put my BIG phone in the pocket it just pulls it straight down 😔 I love adding pockets to dresses with a waist seam as that seam will help with the stability of the garment. I will be working on a video on how to add pockets to dress with a side seam soon which hopefully will be helpful to those who want pockets in all their dresses ❤️❤️

Why would you not match the stripes!
@eloiseezra51943 жыл бұрын
yep, most people are bothered by the stripes not matching and sometimes I try to match the stripes but sometimes I just don't really care.(personal preference) in this instance, I wanted to save fabric so when I cut this pattern I cut the from right side up and the back right side down so that I could fit it all in the least amount of fabric. to me it was worth it since I didn't have enough fabric to make it match. it doesn't bother me, my mother in law on the other hand always buys extra fabric so she can match her stripes ❤️❤️ the beauty of sewing your own garments is that you can make that decision based on your preference 😊
@drblondegirl4880 Жыл бұрын
When you are making it then you can match the stripes if you are bothered. Her dress is precious.

There are tons of people offering free music without copywrite, you could find something a bit more unique. I'd even rather just watch you sew in silence than to hear that music over and over the entire video. The volume was great though! Nice and consistent. Many videos blast the music in between audio clips and you are constantly muting and unmuting. Anyhow, thanks for sharing. I hope you can see I am trying to be constructive and not abusive. Not easy for us people who don’t have a serger. Sewing a knit is awful on a sewing machine.
@LaBarge3 жыл бұрын
I saw on an antique Kenmore which has a zigzag stitch. Some sewers say to sew with a slight zigzag to build in a little stretch in your stitching, but I find that if I just double-stitch my seams they hold up pretty well. If some stitch does pop, I just sew again in that spot where it broke. Don't pass up on knits because you don't have a serger. That dress had a loose fit that wouldn't put stress on the seams. In that case, you just have to be careful pulling the dress over your head that you don't pop a seam in the sides or the sleeve. Other than that, you should be OK with a regular sewing machine!
@Pureimagination2003 жыл бұрын
@@LaBarge double stitch a straight stitch?? Like on a long stitch #5? I tried to stitch using a zig zag on a wide zig zag stitch and tension 3 but the fabric still puckered as a I sewed and I didn’t pull the fabric through, I let the dog feed pull the fabric. Thank you for any advice you can give me as I’m a new sewer and I would love to sew stretchy fabrics on my machine
@LaBarge3 жыл бұрын
@@Pureimagination200 I just use a regular stitch, maybe ever-so-slightly stretch the knit material as you're sewing it (from behind and in front of the needle, with my hand), but let the feed dogs pull the fabric like any other. Be sure you have a good sharp needle, or use a needle just for knits, but I find a regular needle works fine on knits.
