Thank you for this, I'm a beginner sewer. It is a hobby I've always wanted since childhood. I've left my 9 to 5 a few years ago and am a housewife but I would like to make my hobby make money for my family to help out in the next 5 to 10 years. You have shared gold with me, learn; grow; hone your skills with time and patience. ❤

I appreciate this video. I started sewing 3 years ago and I consider myself an advanced beginner. My family and friends compliment how wonderful my garments look, my mom tells me I need to start a business. I explained that I really don't want to be a sew for hire or start a sweat shop out of my home! It's hard enough squeezing in 2 to 3 hours after working my 9 to 5/ lol I don't knock those who choose to do that but I knew when I started sewing early on that I didn't want to venture in that aspect of sewing. It's purely a hobby for me that I passionately enjoy. And plus I don't want that kind of wear and tear on my machine mass producing for others. I invested a lot of money and time in my sewing from buying books, online tutorials etc. I personally feel it won't be fun for me anymore if I started to sew for hire. I think as I continue to progress I would want to design patterns. Thank you for sharing your insight.

'You're basically F'in it up for everybody else' haha! Great video! I've been sewing since I was 16 (now 23) and I still class myself as a beginner until I grow my skills a bit more. If you're serious about sewing and business everything you're saying makes sense and is quite obvious, it's not discouraging at all. Its SMART!

This is so great! I really appreciate you giving the advice that might be hard to hear. I totally relate to you seeing for old work on a friend and hating it! My friends and family will still wear clothes I made for them years ago, and tho I hate seeing all my mistakes on display, it reminds me of how much better at sewing I've gotten :)

Thank you the advice! I too have a sewing business which I do from home and it is going ok. I do get anxiety sometimes because I get zero support from family. Without support from them you cannot progress especially if you're expected to do the household chores picking and dropping up kids and expected to drop everything for them.

Thank you for making this video. My Grandmother has owned her sewing business for over 30 year and she is a Master seamstress now and does great work . I've been on and off with sewing but I do have a crazy passion for it. I love making dress and skirts but now realizing I need to step out off my comfort zone and expand my skills. I most likely going to take over my grandmother business but I am also creating my own in the proceeds of learning the business aspect of sewing and learning how to level up my sewing skills. I want to become a master at this and give all my future clients quality work. Your video was extremely uplifting to me. now I feel like I am on the right path of learning as much as I can about this industry. Thank you so much.

I totally enjoyed this video I learned so much, because I've been wanting to start a sewing business for a while. I had got an idea to just make quilts and blankets for people, but I soon realize that I was limiting my ablility to grow. And I have all this fabric that I have not used. You are very correct that starting a business is not all about just sewing, I had to learn that the hard way. I felt discourage and disappointed in myself, but I'm gonna start again and gain as much knowledge as I can to make this work for me. Because I absolutely love to sew, and I know this is my passion!

I don't even want a sewing business (I just want to learn sewing for myself really) but I've started an event planning business and know that sewing skills will come in handy for various reasons. I've watched both of your starting a sewing business videos and can say without a doubt you're so accurate in the business tips. Between getting a resale license to setting up the proper business structure to banking needs and all that, it takes so much to start a business. Great tips!

I am properly late to the party as this video was done 5 years ago. However I am new to sewing and I started my business 7months ago, Initially I got someone to do my sewing for me as i do silk accessories, but now i am learning how to do them myself. I totally agree with what you have said as one needs to learn the skill and also do a lot of research especially before pricing, understanding your make up and all. I also think its a matter of personality as well. I lovvvve good things and i always go for luxury, so i cannot make something any less than that and put my name on it. Thank you so much for this video, its not discouraging at all. xx

This information just helped me from making a lifetime mistake. I am talented in doing a lot of things and among those things is designing and hand sewing. And i have been doing a great job at it, so much so others want me to make clothes for them and there has been such a pressure for me go into the sewing business which i highly respect but isn't where i want to be. When i say this people think I'm crazy but if i do go into this then i become one of the people who undercut others who are way better. God gave me this awesome ability because it was meant to help me and my siblings out because we love dressing up but we can't at the moment be able to go buy some of the amazingly designed clothes and i also because I am very particular. So instead of buying what i get i make what i want and need. Great advice. Thank you very much

Dont give in to the pressure that others who have no idea what's involved in sewing quality garments put upon you! So many people think its a get rich overnight venture. There are young designers out there who have to work another job to keep their business afloat! Before I retired I use to hear that all the time and it went in one ear and out the other!!

Hi so I know this video is a good 4 years old but I wanted to say thank you for the info. I have been sewing for about 12+ years now all self taught and I did have a job as an alterations specialist at David's Bridal for about a year. It really helped me improve a lot of my sewing and how I view my pricing on things because I use to WAY under charge. I still do from time to time but I'm getting better at figuring that out. I was wanting to start my own business but I have been finding that hard to do. I sadly had to quit David's and move out of state to help care for my grandparents and there is no David's Bridal or any type of Alterations place that is hiring within a two hour drive (one way) from me. I have found a regular job at a grocery store which I hate. I'm really wanting to venture off and do my own thing but it's so hard to do when i live in the middle of no where live at least an hour from the closest town (I drive two hours a day to and from work currently). Do you happen to have any tips for how to get an online sewing business started? I do apologize for the long crazy rant. And thank You for taking the time to read this!! And IF you are curious about what I make my Instagram is SewManySweetThings88 I am really interested in making traditional Asian attire and modernized versions of those clothes along with many other things, but Kimonos are definitely a favorite of mine. ^-^

Thanks so much Erin. I've only just discovered your videos a week ago. I'm pleased to know I'm on the right track at the beginning of my journey. Here in New Zealand face masks are being made and sold by every Tom Dick and Harry. Elastic sells out fast and is not too easy to find on some days. I've been making masks myself but haven't sold any. I go to buy fabric and elastic and noticed A LOT OF ENVY amongst us customers. I cringe when I see poorly made masks being sold online BUT it has driven me to not accept mediocre. I have been working diligently on researching and creating a high quality product. I'm getting closer everyday. I am a night owl and a loner I listen to many videos while I work and glad to inform you that this video is one of the valuable gems of my digging. God Bless.

I totally agree with you. I've found in my experience that beginners mislead clientele with their faux expectations and confidence. The expected time, pricing and quality of products is unrealistic to people who don't have a sufficient skill set. I graduate from school in another year but I've been sewing my own designs for over 10 years. I don't sew for anybody yet but I own my own business which is legal but I've been moving slowly with it. Anyway the point is that I agree that beginners that jump straight into the sewing business with limited sewing skills make it harder for us that have the skills but have not gotten started. Customers think they know a lot about clothes and fashion because a lot of uneducated sewers claim they are designers and they have knowledge about garments and sewing that they don't actually have. My point in my rambling is if your a beginner and you really want to grow a sewing business taking a year to learn a proper skill set is a great idea. How you learn is up to you. Be it school, self taught or apprenticeship definitely get the skills first and have resources available outside of youtube videos. The same books that are used in college sewing courses you can buy those books used on amazon for $20 or $30 so there really are no excuses for beginners to jump into sewing without a basic skill set and resources (meaning information that you use to problem solve). For example if you don't want to pay college tuition and you don't know anyone who makes patterns, www.craftsy.com has a great series of patternmaking courses that are taught by people who are actually in the industry teaching etc, and if you catch the website at the right times you can get the classes for $20 each. Either way you save money and you invest in yourself. But this is a great video, thank you for posting it. I'm happy to see that you have address these and other topics your experience is encouraging and helping me to feel better about moving forward with my own sewing business.

Thank you for this video. Ive been sewing for a while. Quilts only until recently. I never learned how to price a quilt and actually had a hard time letting go of my projects. recently I have become obsessed with thrift store transformations.. I made a wallet with jeans and shirts from the thrift store. about $6.00 investment for product, but time cutting out usable pieces of fabric and making it was alot of time. I took it to work and of course 3 people want one. Everyone is telling me I should sell these. I know I have much to learn as far sewing skills. I enjoy sewing so much and am learning how to be detailed oriented in my technique, but I am amazed how people don't see the quality.. or the mistakes, they love it, and keep telling me Im so talented. How do you know when you have the skill sets and readiness to start a business. right now, Im doing projects for co workers, bags , wallets and pillowcases by request. getting everything at thrift store. Is there a niche here? how do I know?
@Stylesewme
@Stylesewme 8 жыл бұрын
Bethany! I love questions like these because they are specific and give me something to answer. So Girl, you have already answered your own questions!! You have created your OWN niche! You're doing it exactly as I would recommend. You have found an item that is in demand that costs you very little to produce with thrifted fabrics. What I would do talk about what you're already doing to add more value to your bags. They are UNIQUE because they are from upcycled materials and no one will have a bag like theirs (+$$) and they are ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY because you are upcycling materials (thrifted goods are HUUUUGE right now). So, I will tell you that we are our biggest critics. Take an extra bag you made to work. Let them touch it and inspect it. If they don't mention a flaw and are ready to buy, then you're ready as far as your product goes. Start small, set yourself up a free checking account to keep those funds seperate that you receive from a buyer. Start researching online to see other handmade clutches and look at the price points of something similar to what you're offering. Also look at their reviews, units sold (Etsy and eBay), this will tell you that they're actually selling. I'm preparing another video about pricing and vendor booths (which are awesome for accessories) so keep on the lookout for that. Best wishes to you, Bethany!

I'm currently going through The Readers Digest "Complete Guide to Sewing" and learning the techniques. I found it frustrating to read through a pattern and not know how to do something. Also, I want to prepare myself for bigger things and practicing the little things seemed to be the best approach. There's room for everyone to run a business. I'm in no rush. Thank you for this timely message!

The thing that stuck out most to me is when you said "learn your machine". I have taken a few sewing classes and never once did the instructor say learn your machine. They were more focused on threading the machine and sewing a straight line. Thank you so much for sharing this video.

I agree. I have been sewing on and off for 50 years. I just read the manual for my latest machine that I've had for about 10 years now. I was amazed at what it could and could NOT do. I'm learning my machine, for sure. Even something as simple as changing your needle more often. The only reason I changed it was because it broke. The new needle went through so smoothly. It even sounded different. WOW. Whodathunkit!!! I would like to see you tell us about thread and needle selections. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and skills with us. Congrats on your anniversary. Stay blessed.

Great advice for beginners and all sewers...The only thing I would add is to learn how to fit your customers. There's not a lot of fit issues with a gathered skirt but if you're doing anything with a bodice you can encounter sway back , sloped shoulder and a host of other issues...so like you said " know your skill level "!

it's so funny you mention the "newbies" because I recently came across a person who started sewing maybe 3 months ago and is already doing classes and trying to teach others. I'm thinking to myself what on earth can you possible teach someone else and you've only been doing it a couple of months. no ma'am! Like the rest of the folks hers I would love to see a video on pricing. I haven't sewn since high school but finding your channel has really inspired me and I recently purchased a machine . I plan to do this as a hobby but I am the type that really likes to research every avenue because you never know what may come of a "hobby"

Thank you SO much for this . It is refreshing. I have had a passion to do this, I'm talented and went to art school, but didn't have the slightest idea how to do this for a living. I'm reapproaching my work, and learning more because business has changed A LOT since I graduated art school. Even my teachers don't know everything about business, they know what works for them. I subscribed and will be watching more of your vids!

ALLLLLLLLOF THIS!!! I just started sewing myself and after posting my first skirt that is so far from perfect folks are ready to order and I'm just like WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT not only that I wanted to sew cuz as a plus size and tall woman I often find myself saying oh I wish I could find that in my size or a certain color and as of now sewing is fun although sometimes frustrating (ie my thread breaking 50 11 times while trying to gather a skirt for a 58" waist) I think if I take the joy out of it I won't want to do it anymore...so for now I'm like a sponge soaking up a this knowledge ppl are sharing...oan your teeth are GORGEOUS!!!(not being weird lol)

What an excellent, professional, clearly thought out and well spoken presentation! I am assuming you have continued to progress in your business and I would not be surprised. So much to glean from this video; I hope many (regardless of what type of business they are trying to start) will listen to you and literally study this video so that they will not get off track from the very beginning. And I also pray that you will continue to encourage yourself as your own business grows and as you wisely mentor many others.

I would love to see more videos on running your home business, how to forecast what you need for next year to stay in business. Also, applications or tools you use to organize your business and pay tax. Recommendations for tax or accounting professionals or software
