We didn't do that - but probably because where I lived, we couldn't afford to buy presents like that - must be a newer generational thing. So don't feel bad, I never heard of that either. On Valentine's Day for school, you had to make a card for everyone and make sure to give everyone candy, but that was it. It's expensive to have a kid nowadays!! Oh and the "containers" are called piñata, and it's actually a Mexican tradition that's gotten taken up by Americans, because we like to hit things with sticks.
