Lovely work! Your stitches are so neat and even, very nice. You can use canvas in place of coutil, its a bit stretchier. But I don't think that would matter much on fully boned stays. The pop of green is joyful. My only criticism is please use larger font on the captioning. :) I hope you post more content. Enjoyed this very much.

And you will absolutely be able to do it! Stays look very intimidating but are really quite simple if you just work through each step one by one. This was my first pair and I've made another since, the hardest part is hand sewing the binding around the tabs and the most exhausting part is sanding down all the boning! Good luck.

I wish I had seen this BEFORE I used the pattern. Watching you stitch One side of the bias tape down before folding it over and THEN attaching the otherside is the ONLY way you will get it to work. Absolutely! The pattern instructions are a big all over the place at the best of times. I did a lot of reading before I started making my stays which is the only reason I avoided this mistake. Once you know, it's a pretty straight forward project! Good luck. x

Hello, this is the first video of yours I have watch. I don't know if you have used this font-styling before, but it is so hard to read. The grey color gets lost in the background when the purple stripe runs out. It is also a very small font. I am sure that if I tried to watch this video on my phone I wouldn't be able to read the text at all. These problems can be easily fixed. First change the font color so it as a white outline. It will help it stand out when in shadowy backgrounds or against similar colored fabric. Then change the font size. It doesn't need to be drastically bigger but a two sizes up should do the trick. I hope this helps for your future videos.

I’ve said in another comment somewhere that I didn’t realise how difficult to read the font was until the file was exported - If it helps, I did actually surprisingly find that it was easier to read on my phone as the picture quality was slightly more crisp. Hey Kathy, thanks for watching! I did do a little bit more hand sewing than the pattern called for as I deviated slightly from the instructions, but if I remember correctly the edge binding and the lining (?) called for hand stitching in the pattern instructions. You could definitely omit the lining and machine stitch the binding down - Or place the lining on top of the stays and stitch the binding over the top of it to hold it in place - This would be a bit tricky and fiddly to get it through the machine but it's definitely been done before! I'd suggest a quick google on how to machine bind eighteenth century stays. x

I'm following the same Simplicity pattern 8162 in the construction of my stays. It is driving me crazy that the instructions say to insert the zip tie boning much later in the process. It makes more sense to me to insert them much earlier, as you have chosen to do.

When I was researching the pattern before I bought it, I saw a few people saying the same thing so luckily I didn't end up making that mistake! A few reviews of the pattern said that if you follow the instructions as they are you end up sewing some of the boning channels shut when you attach the straps, so I think it might just be a mistake in the instructions. This is actually a blouse! I bought it from H&M a couple of years ago so I'm not sure if you'll still be able to find it. It was pretty long so I was able to hide it in the photos, as my proper chemise hadn't been made yet. It's pretty savvy! The pattern I was using actually suggested them on the back of the envelope, but I've definitely seen people do it before, too. I wouldn't recommend them for super curvy corsets like Victorian or Edwardian era corsets, but for anything 17th-18th century, Tudor etc, they work great! x

I used the Simplicity 8162 pattern designed by the ladies at American Duchess. The pattern comes with a boning template for partially boned stays, but I just added more boning in between the already marked lines of the template to make them extra supportive. Happy sewing!

Thanks so much! I used a sew in interfacing by Birch, it's called Shape to Create Woven Shapewell from Spotlight. I used a ruler and coloured pencils to mark the lines onto it and it worked really well!

Hi Rebecca, the white interlining fabric I used was a heavy weight sew in interfacing from my local fabric store. The pattern suggested using buckram but I wasn't able to get it in my area without ordering online, but this worked perfectly and draws on very easily with pencil. Any heavy weight woven fabric would do, cotton, drill, denim... x

I'm not sure of the brand, but it's a non-stretch sew in interlining I bought off the bolt from my local fabric store. The pattern calls for coutil, but I couldn't find any. I've read elsewhere that any heavier weight woven fabric will do, like a duck, canvas or broadcloth. Thanks for watching! x

Hi can you tell me how wide your cable ties are? The back of the pattern says 3/4 of an inch, but I can’t find any that are more than 12mm wide, and 3/4 inch means they would need to be 19mm wide

My cable ties are about one centimetre wide! I used the boning channel guidelines that the pattern came with and just added more of my own and they were a great size for my cable ties. 19mm does seem a little wide for cable ties... I haven't looked at the back of the pattern for a while. Hope this helps! However wide your cable ties are you can just draw your own boning channels of the right size onto your interlining, either way. x

The main fabric is a jacquard from the furnishing section. The interlining is a stiff woven sew-in interfacing I picked up from the fabric store - A lot of people recommended a fabric called coutil, but I couldn't find it locally so I used this instead. 😊

Hi Linda! Unfortunately once the video's been published I can't alter the titles - I've switched to a voice over in future to avoid these issues! But here are what the captions say in order of appearance in case they contain any information useful to you! 0:13 I'm using the American Duchess Simplicity 8162 pattern as a template. I have a 28" waist and a 36" bust and cut a straight size 14. 0:30 After cutting out the pieces, I basted the outer layer and the interlining together by hand using a long running stitch - The blue thread. Here I'm sewing the boning channels. 0:44 The pattern has guidelines for half-boned stays, but I wanted mine to be fully boned. I used the American Duchess blogpost on boning patterns to mark more channels onto my interlining. 1:09 I used coloured pencils and a ruler to mark my channels. I used green to indicate boning channels, and red to indicate no-go zones, like cut lines and where a seam will sit. 1:14 Next, I lined up the notches and pinned the main seams together. The pattern includes a 1.5 centimetre seam allowance. Historically, these steps would've been down by hand, but I cheated! 2:14 Once all the seams apart from the straps were sewn, I pressed them open. You could clip them with pinking shears to help prevent fraying, but I didn't bother. They're covered later, anyway! 2:59 Time to add boning. I used 1 centimetre wide cable ties in place of whalebone, which has similar flexibility. I got a pack of 100 heavy duty ties from Bunnings! 3:17 I held each one up to it's casing and trimmed it about 1 centimetre shorter, then curved and tapered the ends with sandpaper. This stops the sharp cut ends from jabbing through the fabric. 5:07 This takes a while! Especially if you want your stays to be fully boned. It definitely made my fingers sore but it was worth it in the end. 6:21 Back to sewing. The seams, front and back edges are secured to the interlining using large whip stitches. These don't have to be very small or neat as they get covered later. 7:27 Next I cut the tabs open as per the pattern guidelines. Cutting into your project can seem scary, but it all works out in the end as long as you follow the lines carefully and don't cut too deep. 7:53 Now the tabs are bound. This is easily the most fiddly part! I used a pre-mad bias tape and pressed it in half length-ways to help when shaping it to the raw edges. 8:51 One half of the binding is sewn to the right side of the stays. I used a sort of spaced out running stitch. The underside is whip stitched to the interlining to encase the raw edges. 10:07 Once the tabs were bound, I added some daisy trim. As far as I can tell, this isn't historically accurate at all but I have little impulse control for cute things! 11:03 Before binding the upper edge, the straps are added. They're made up of an outer layer, an interlining layer, and a lining layer, with the interlining sandwiched in the middle. 11:21 I ended up swapping these pins out off camera for a basting stitch to keep the three layers together, seen in the next shot! 11:34 Cheating again! 1.5 centimetre seam allowance is included for this, too. These allowances were also whip stitched down to the interlining off camera like the rest of the seams. 13:12 I covered the eyelet spaces with a seperate facing, so that the lining can be removed for later laundering or replacement without affecting the finished eyelets. 14:08 Here I'm lining the tabs individually. I cut some scrap cotton I had leftover from a previous project to size, pressed the edges under and whipped them into place. 14:24 I found a helpful blogpost that mentions individually lining the tabs being accurate to the period, which I'll link in the description box down below. 14:48 Now the rest of the lining goes in. Historically, linings were tacked in last so that they could be removed or replaced when they needed washing or became too worn. 15:50 Marking out the eyelet placement. I opted for spiral lacing instead of the cross lacing specified on the pattern - I'll link a blogpost I found helpful about this lacing pattern down below. 16:55 I inserted metal eyelets as I was in a hurry try them on and see how they fit, but this wouldn't have been accurate to the period. I ended up covering them in embroidery floss to blend them in later on. Hope this helps. x

Thank you! This is actually an old blouse I bought from H&M a couple of years ago, but there are heaps of commercial patterns out there with similar designs. I usually find them in the costume section meant for pirate outfits! x

Your hand sewing is beautiful. Very neat and precise. The gabric is not so nice. In my mind it doesn't make sense. Maybe stash buster for demonstration purpose or maybe not. Just what you liked.
