Really like you breaking down the price of these dresses, we take our clothes for granted without appreciating how they’re made

It’s always fun working with the earlier Hollywood patterns, they have some of the most unique quirky methods for dressmaking. You will learn a lot of different techniques. Love the Lace Details, Hat & Bag you styled with it too!

@@HaleyMarieVintage The 30s really was the decade that forgot about arses :p I'm used to having to size up dress patterns in the waist, but when sewing a 1930s wearing history pattern with an a-line skirt, I had to let it out at the hips which I've never had to do.

It's absolutely perfect fabric for this dress. If you do a lot of vintage patterns, you can try a brand called "Aunt Grace" fabric... They have lots of vintage fabric reprints. Nice job, young lady!! FYI...pro-tip...as you do a project and you come across mistakes or things you would do differently... write them down in a sewing journal... keep you from repeating mistakes or doing something multiple times 😊

So pretty on you. Clothing patterns of old required more hand sewing but the details turned out so well. I cant imagine doing bound buttonholes on a house dress unless your machine doesnt have a buttonhole maker. Bound button holes were reserved for fancy clothing and nicer coats in the 60s forward.

For a long time I was terrified of my button hole foot so I got very good at making bound buttonholes 🤣 Now I am very pro buttonhole foot lol

Bound buttonholes are on my 'skills-to-learn' list. Yours turned out beautifully. From what I can see of it, they used either the fashion fabric or muslin for their version of modern interfacing. Your dress turned out absolutely wonderfully. Well done. I adore the 1930's styles. They were so elegant, and the people were so resilient (can you tell I grew up watching movies from the time, before Ted Turner bought them all and threw them behind a pay wall). I've recently emerged from ebay with a nice bunch of patterns from the time. Technically, they will be a challenge because I've never really worked with bias fabric, but I'm looking forward to it. Their sleeves are mind-bendingly complex. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
@HaleyMarieVintage2 жыл бұрын
Congrats on finding a good eBay lot from that time, I have only done one or two bias projects and they aren't too different!
@stevezytveld65852 жыл бұрын
@@HaleyMarieVintage Thanks! I'm looking forward to working on them. On average the 30's seem really involved in fabric manipulation - especially the sleeves. I guess it was compensating for the price of trim... My self-justification for indulging myself with patterns from the 30's, 40's & 50's is these things aren't being made any more (thank you Stephanie Canada for your service to humanity with the reprint debacles). So they're not about to go down in price. This is also why I'm tracing off my pattern pieces onto cross and dot paper (keep them alive and around for the next generation of sewists). Anyways. Great dress. Well done.

Love it! I’ve been eyeing that fabric for a while as well. Have you ever tried the strip method of bound buttonholes? I learned about it when sewing Vogue 9838 from the 60’s. They had me make the bound buttonholes using two strips of folded fabric. So much easier! I don’t do my buttonholes any other way.
@Ellaodi2 жыл бұрын
OMG THIS IS BRILLIANT. I've been afraid to try bound buttonholes with the normla.method but the vogue method is so easy 💡
@HaleyMarieVintage2 жыл бұрын
I'll have to check this out, I am so curious about this strip method, anything that makes it less tedious would be amazing!
@infamoussphere72282 жыл бұрын
I've never heard of the strip method! Sounds interesting. I've only done bound buttonholes the small-squares way, but I don't mind it too much. Then again I've only done about 4 at a time. The main issue with bound buttonholes for me is that you have to pick out your buttons ahead of time, whereas I'm more likely to make up the garment and then try out a few button options to see which ones I prefer.

You have to take your measurements and then select the appropriate size... Also take a look at the "ease" as that will give you an idea as to how roomy the garment will fit once sewn. Things I've learned the hard way..lol. And take time to do the parts you don't like because in the long run you'll usually end up with better results. Tedious tasks often payoff...

Can you believe I’ve never done a blind button hole

Once you do them you'll hate them but prefer the finish so it always becomes a debate 😂 Also what is the funniest thing about them is I was too afraid to learn how to use my buttonhole foot so I instead learned these
