Never really sewed in my Life and just bought my first sewing machine. So I decide to do a slipcover! I followed your 4 part series, mostly, as best I could, got lost a several times. But I'm pretty happy with the slipcover (although not a sofa bed). So thank you very much for this video.

The best looking slipcover that I have ever seen. Most look like loose skin, Yours was awesome. I have covered several pcs, of furniture, and the looked pretty dang good. No professional, but I do alterations. Never have attempted a slip cover, but maybe I can do it now. Awesome video, excellent directions. That it is a family affair is very special.

Where have you been! I watched another Vlog on the same subject that did not do a muslin pattern. I almost ruined the project using that method and I found I was getting lost in the process. So much hassle could have been avoided. Awesome video. I felt like an apprentice watching you and Nicole work. Your tutorial has given me a huge advantage and will go a long way toward perfecting my craft for my customers. I want to add slipcovers to my portfolio, but never felt like I nailed it. I've always done great work, but I needed to work smarter. This was the answer!

I have a request: could you please make a video tutorial showing how to install a zipper up against piping installed around the back of the sofa where the arm scrolls, as was one of the options mentioned for zipper placement in video #1? Thanks for all the time you put into teaching us all.

Wow! Nicole has some mad sewing skills. I’m in awe that she doesn’t end up with extra on one side every time. How would this process be different if I’m slipcovering a non-sleeper sofa? Would I still add the three inches for tucking but sew those seams closed instead of Velcro or can I just cut and sew at the pinned lines? Thanks so much and I hope you’re still checking comments so many years after the initial release of these videos.

Hi Monique, Thank you so much for watching our videos! I'll pass along you said to Nicole, she'll be very happy to hear it. Great question, yes you would still want to add the three inches of tuck-in, and just sew it closed instead of using Velcro. I hope this helps! I'd love to see the finished product, so if you could send us a photo via the live chat at our website that would be awesome! All the Best, Grant

Hello Monique, Thank you for watching the videos and leaving a comment. YES! You still need to leave the 3" tuck in for all slipcovers. Some pieces of furniture may need a little more less tuck in. The pinned lines would include the tuck in so yes sew along there. I hope this helped you, thanks again. Cheers, Paul

Although I have done a lot of sewing, this is my first slipcover. So, I feel like I need some hand holding, which you certainly provide a lot of in these comprehensive videos. One question: when cutting the skirt pieces, you say to add 12" to each length. I assume that is to accommodate the seams and the fabric needed for the pleats. But, I'm not sure how much fabric to use for the pleats. It looks like you are using about 4" per fold. Is that about right?

I'm so impressed with these videos and eager to get my own slipcover made. I've watched the wing chair and sofa bed videos because I'm doing a chair but it has the rolled arms like the sofa and removable seat cushion. I learned what to do about the scrolled front of the arm from the sofa video :) . But I am confused about one thing and perhaps in all the videos I've watched I've gotten mixed up. In the wing chair you had an inside arm and an outside arm (2 pieces) and when you cut out the arm for the sofa you cut it all in one piece and said the fabric would be "pinned" under the roll to fit when finished. But then when you took the pattern to the fabric you cut it in two pieces I think because of the shadowing of the fabric and did not show any pinning when you put the finished cover on. It didn't really look like it needed it on yours. I am having a difficult time getting my one piece to lay flat over the rolled arm. The arm is rolled but tapered from back to front. I'm afraid two pieces will create such a fitted arm that it might be too tight to put on. (?) It's a very old chair - belonged to my grandparents when they first got married nearly 90 years ago and I really want it to fit well - not saggy. What kind of pinning do you recommend that will hold fast but also not rip the fabric if any stress is put on it? Thanks so much!
@ucsolutionsgivingmore
@ucsolutionsgivingmore 9 жыл бұрын
Debbi Garren Hi Debbi, Yes it can be confusing to know what to do. It's very difficult to get the fabric when it rolls under the arm to stay snug and tight under the arm. 1) You can use what are called twist (Easy to find online) pins they have a plastic head on them, they have been used for years to hold fabrics in place. HOWEVER I DO NOT RECOMMEND THEM WITH SMALL CHILDREN AROUND. They can easily be removed and pose a danger to small children. 2) If you want, you can apply Velcro to the inside of the slipcover where the outside arms and the scrolls meet. Attach the Velcro with fabric glue (dry over night) or a small amount of hot glue. Not to much so it doesn't photograph through and it can be seen on the good side of fabric. You will have to attach the hook or loop (the opposite side) of what you choose for the cover and attach that to the furniture in the same way. Provided you no longer want to use the upholstered piece when the cover is removed. 3) You can TRY to loosen the seams in the front of the scroll and the outside back where the sagging is taking place. Sew in to cinch up the area that is sagging. When it is tighter in that area it may not sag. I really hope this cleared things up for you. Thanks for watching and send another question if you have one. All the best. Paul

At 32:20 I learned something. When I've made a bed skirt I put that joined seam right in the middle and can see that it shouldn't be there but moved out of 'view'. I'll need to watch these a few times before I attempt to make a slipcover. I'd started one but couldn't figure out how to join the inside arm to the back and to add enough fabric to go waaaay into and under the deck and and arm. My thought was to use a foam rubber slinky (pool toy) to fill in that space and hold down the fabric, now I'm rethinking that process. If I could make a fitted, lined, wool suit surely I can do this....I think :(
@ucsolutionsgivingmore
@ucsolutionsgivingmore 8 жыл бұрын
+Alice Crawford Hi Alice, First and foremost, we want to thank you for watching our videos. For the inside back and platform of your slipcover you will want to add 3" for the tuck-in. Now for the inside arm where it meets the platform and the inside back make sure the tuck-in allowance is the same 3". However you need to gradually decease the tuck-in allowance as get closer to the front of the sofa just a 1/2" (or just the seam allowance). If it a spring platform than you should add more tuck-in. Now to keep that tuck-in in place I would suggest that you roll up old magazines and push they in there as far as they can go! I hope this helps! All the Best, Grant

hi I live in Barbados and where i work we do this kind of stuff , but sometime the customers don't want to pay what is charged , they say it's to expensive but to me doing a slip cover is almost like reupholstering a chair and they are what i call custom made it's not like the ones you buy in the stores which look a hot mess in my opinion. Your thoughts on this .

Love these tutorials! When you are sewing the second side of the cushion to the boxing, you don't mention that the zipper should be slightly unzipped. Not fun to have it inside out with no way to make it right side out.

Great series of videos thanks Paul and Nicole. I'm thinking of embarking on a slip cover project and I have a question. My dad was a tailor and I remember him cutting patterns, marking with chalk and sewing up the cloth, but, in your video, when Nicole starts sewing, I can't see any chalk or pencil marks on the final fabric from the pattern. Is this because she is able to do the half inch seam by eye from experience, am I not able to see the pencil/chalk marks, or am I missing something?
@ucsolutionsgivingmore
@ucsolutionsgivingmore 9 жыл бұрын
Mike Brady HI Mike, thanks for commenting. You are right. We cut a half inch out from the pencil marks we make when the pattern was attached the furniture, marking where the pins are. If you want to save sometime you can skip the pencil marking. When making the pattern,cut a half inch from the pins when the pattern fabric is on the furniture. As you go along trimming the pattern, keep checking to see if your a half inch out from the pins. Then just follow the pattern when cutting your top cover fabric. Hope this clears it up. All the best and thanks for watching. Paul

Thank you, very good video. I have some questions: How deep is the zipper pocket ? Did you use straight stitch, any recommended length or tension ? Is it possible to have a video that zooms in (on the machine and fabric) when Nicole is sawing the corners (of the seat cushion). Thanks again.
@ucsolutionsgivingmore
@ucsolutionsgivingmore 8 жыл бұрын
+lifeisshort lifeiswonderful Hi, Thanks for watching our videos! A zipper pocket is about 2" deep. If you make the zipper pocket to deep it will be quite hard to get the zipper back out of the pocket. However the opposite is true if the zipper pocket is to sallow. Also great question about the length of the stitch! You want it just about in the middle, if it is to short it is harder to cut open the stitches if you make a mistake. However if it is to long the seams will be too loose. Also when you get to a corner, you need to keep your needle through your fabric and lift up the presser foot and turn slipcover around the corner keeping the needle in place (through the fabric). Try our best to keep always sew just a 1/2 in, even when you turn a corner. I hope this helps! All the Best, Grant

Thank you so much for your videos! They have been a lifesaver. I noticed that when Nicole is attaching the skirt the part about the corner pleat is not explained. Is there anything extremely different than the center pleat she explained?
@ucsolutionsgivingmore
@ucsolutionsgivingmore 9 жыл бұрын
+Paulina Jordan Hi Paulina, Very sorry for the late reply. Always glad to hear the video has helped. The corner pleat is basically the same as the center pleat. It is easier for you to see the center pleat, because of the angle of the camera. On the corner pleats just be sure that you keep the slipcover body fabric lined up with your skirt. When you are at the corner you may need to pivot the slipcover body fabric some to keep it lined up with skirt fabric. It is same general idea as anything with a corner, a pillow, a cushion, or a skirt. Again sorry for the late reply and thanks for watching. Best regards. Paul

I need to choose a fabric for my slipcover. I want white, machine washable and sturdy but comfortable. Any suggestions? Cost and availability are also factors, I dont want the most expensive fabric because I am making two covers, one to wear while the other is being washed.
@ucsolutionsgivingmore
@ucsolutionsgivingmore 10 жыл бұрын
armywifeprepper Perfect! glad the videos helped. White has been the go to for a long time and looks great, it's a classic. A twill fabric will work very well and/or a denim, but I would really try to hunt down a prewashed fabric if you can (or a synthetic).This will help prevent shrinking, it really effects the skirts if you have one. Dry cleaning I recommend only, but we have a lot of our clients wash them with success. I tend to like a fabric weight between 10 or 12 oz. It's thicker and most likely stops any photographing from the upholstery fabric underneath. The lower the number the lighter or thinner the fabric. I hope this helped you. Thanks a lot for watching. Cheers. Paul

Hello Hulya, Thank you for watching the video. As for the price it all comes down to your location, prices are all across the board. Some upholstery shops charge to same as re-upholstering. There are individuals who only offer slipcovers, they are usually on the least expensive side. For a 6 cushion sofa with a skirt labor is around $700. to $1200. Check in your area if there is anyone offering this service very few people are. I hope this has helped you. Please help us by sharing the videos, it really goes a long way when you do.
