Hi Darryn, I hope you're are well and will be back soon! I made a couple of books with raised cords like shown here and what I find most difficult is avoiding piercing the thread .🥲🥲 The trick you describe helps but I guess I have to practise much more before this sewing becomes second nature.
@DASBookbinding
@DASBookbinding Жыл бұрын
Things are looking up! I still piece the thread occasionally. You just have to back it up and redo. One of those things - the more you worry about it, the more often it will happen:)

Thanks for the fascinating history! Im sure you will have reason and time to talk about all those other sewing support topics in a future video. It makes such a difference to know the history and reasoning behind practices in a craft, and the sawn holes is a great example of why! Knowing that history makes it easy to see where it is suitable and why it is sometimes used where it is unsuitable :)

8:54 I don’t remember if you mention, in the video of sewing on sunken cords or this one, that there is a difference between going around the cords parallel or antiparallel to the sewing direction (making a full circle or a half one). I can see here that it makes the cords stand out from the spine more, and probably puts less strain on the paper at the sewing hole. Are there other differences? Structural, resistance to strain, tradition, things like those? 🤔
@DASBookbinding
@DASBookbinding Жыл бұрын
Big difference. You only go over (half round) on sunken cords. This pulls the cords into the text. But you have to encircle the raised cords or the thread would tear out of the sections

Excellent videos!!! Could you tell me what knot you are using to attach the multiple strings together? It looked like you just did an over hand knot on the string but I wasn't sure if you tied something around the other side.

I think you mean for the headbands, in which case, yes an overhand knot.

You're the David Attenborough of bookbinding!! :) Is it better to gild the front edge of a book before or after you round the spine? Thx
@DASBookbinding
@DASBookbinding 2 жыл бұрын
Both rounding before and after are common. After and there is little steps in the gilded surface and after is nice smooth gold surface. But of course, before is much easier, and gilding in the round is one of the trickiest bookbinding techniques there is.

I'm choosing my leather for my book: which is turning out nicely due to your videos: can I tool on matte leather surfaces?
@DASBookbinding
@DASBookbinding 3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can tool on different leather textures. The main thing is the type of leather. For this project it really requires a veg tanned leather. The leather needs to able to absorb water from the grain side. I'm going to use natural goat from Steven Siegel. But if you are fairly new to leather bookbinding I'd recommend Roma Chargreen goat in British tan from Steve. It is very easy to work with and you may not need to do any paring. Good luck! DAS

Hello, quick queston, did you have a video on a glue spine book process? want to make some book for quick sketch drawing and i want to know a fast and simple way to made book on that type i learn a lot from your videos, thanks!
@robertphillips93
@robertphillips93 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, he does have videos on Lumbeck or double-fan adhesive binding. Could be what you're looking for, but there are limitations for that kind of leaf attachment. In particular, if the paper stock is fairly heavy, the number of sheets per volume must be lower. Because the front of the block is firmly clamped while the spine is fanned out tightly, exposing a minute area on the side of each leaf during gluing. Then, a quick reverse fan and the opposite edges are glued. The back is lined with light material and removed from the clamp to dry under weights until safe to handle further. Although it is possible to round such books, they will likely be left unrounded (often even a bit concave). Alternatively, a sketchbook could be simply padded -- a heavy coat of glue applied to a straight, clamped spine. Adhesion can be enhanced by dabbing the spine carefully with a barely moistened cloth. The glue will follow the moisture onto the opened-up paper fibers. Too much water, though, and unsightly waves are apt to develop quickly and irreversibly. So that the spine is as uniform as possible, the loose pages should be jogged on a vibration-free flat table and discouraged from hanging up out of position by blowing down into the stack as it is tapped into place and carefully clamped.

Yep, the double-fan aka Lumbeck binding for single sheets. For sections the stiffened paper binding is quick. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hnjGeGWsabmLrZI DAS

could you mention how thick your thread usually is in millimeters?
@DASBookbinding
@DASBookbinding 3 жыл бұрын
Funny thing about linen thread and how the thickness is not specified. The thread in this video is 18/3 Barbour and is just over 0.5mm thick. For slightly thinner paper I would use 25/3 Barbour, which is just under 0.5mm thick. Maybe 10% difference makes a significant difference in how easy it is to round and back. Or maybe you want smaller shoulders, in which case the 25/3 would be appropriate. If you're using a different brand then you'd need to develop your own feel for what works best. Good luck!
