Hi lovely people
So I managed to record all this vlog with my phone the wrong way round 🤦🏻‍♀️. Soz about that but you know I’m just too lazy to redo it 🤪
This is just the first part of my sewing room revamp vlogs. I’ll hopefully get the next one up which will show progress 🤞. Let’s hope I get it done before December 😝
I mentioned on this vlog about the #frugalfrocks2021 challenge that myself and Sam from @frugalisama are running. If you’d like more info and want to get involved please pop over to mine or Sam’s Instagram pages for details. I also talk about it in some previous vlogs 👍🏼
Happy sewing peeps
Ruan x

I love your vlogs. I love how real you are. I do enjoy you working out how to use your camera, I have the same issues😅. I even struggle with my phone. While I agree having your own sewing room involves some small degree of luck I do think some of us have made sacrifices and worked very hard to have what we do at our age. I don't think you should have to justify or feel guilty to some degree to have what we've worked hard for. Feel proud for your achievements. I worked bloody hard and put up with some below adverage living conditions to have what I have today. And I am so proud of myself and I'm sure you deserve what you have.

I will be looking for your finished room. I will be setting one up, in April. It is a nice size, 12x14 with a twin bed and 1 large dresser I will be using for storage and a cutting table. I have another narrow dresser that will also use for storage and a small closet. I have to paint first because the room was painted by my ex daughter in law for her children. After losing those two grandchildren this year I decided to use the space for something happy. I have a couple of folding tables to use as desks until something more permanent is available.

You should make 'drawers' out of your jersey scraps! With drawers you can make them patchworked since you and hubs hopefully are the only ones to see your 'drawers'! lol If I can suggest, since you have a small room, you should mount a fold out cutting table on the wall that folds down and folds out as a tri fold to give you a spot to cut out patterns that you can tuck away when not in use. If you're moving your serger table over under the window, the space on the serger wall between the cupboard and serger you could mount it there! Your dress form should be called Flora, Petal or Blossom since she has flowers on her! If you add shelves back in your cupboard only make them as deep as the supports on the sides, then you can put over the door hangers on the inside of the door to put garments as your working on them and they won't get crushed. I'm so happy your videos came up in my feed, your videos are awesome! Love your humour and in three videos I have a whole lot of new sayings to use! lol
@theyorkshiresewgirl
@theyorkshiresewgirl 3 жыл бұрын
Ha ha Cecile! I live the idea of using scraps for “drawers” 🤣. I’m definitely going to have a go at that this year! I did think about a wall mounted table. I’m going to see what the space is like when I’ve done it all and see if it would fit in. If not I can just carry on cutting out on the dining table. I think I’d rather have space in my room with it being so tiny 😊
@cecilehoare3053
@cecilehoare3053 3 жыл бұрын
@@theyorkshiresewgirl The idea with the table is that you hinge it so it folds up against the wall when not in use, then fold it out and down when you need it. I certainly understand the space issue, I too have to resort to the dining room table! lol I think if it comes down to having to eat at the breakfast bar Hubs will have issues! lol

I used to sew in a corner of a master bedroom. A year ago we moved into a bigger home and I now have a dedicated space for sewing. I keep wanting to organize it better and perfect it but not sure if that's ever going to happen because I keep changing my mind on different aspects of the organization. At the end of the day, the primary goal really is to get that garment done! As long as the tools we need are nearby it doesn't really matter if the space is Instagram picture worthy. For the fabric stash, I did purchase comic book boards from Amazon and have been able to neatly wrap the fabrics around them and store them in nine cubby like spaces. I'm jealous of your not so big stash. Try to keep it that way. I want to reduce my stash to 3 or 4 cubbies and only shop for more as I need it. Thanks for sharing your space.

Isn't just wonderful to have a sewing space that you can close the door on? It's certainly one of my great pleasures. I really should do a sewing room tour too. I shall try to schedule it in, but not right now as I (foolishly) decided to destash some fabric 2 weeks ago, which meant having to get out every.single.piece. of fabric. I got rid of 2 bin bags FULL of fabric. Good for me! Unfortunately, it meant I had a whole bunch of fabric to put away afterwards. That still hasn't happened because I decided to reorganise my fabric storage, which has become a huge mission, and I don't have the energy. Need to get it finished soon though as I can't look at my options for the #frugalfrocks2021 challenge until it's done, cause I can't actually SEE what fabric I've got right now! It's all in various piles all around the room! Kick me up the butt please!

I put all my patterns in Airtable, a free downloadable database. Then I put the regular pattern covers in sheet protectors in binders by type, and the patterns and instructions in manila envelopes labeled with the company name, pattern number or name, and what it is. I store them in Bankers Boxes, which I got fairly cheaply. 10 for $19. I used 5 boxes for my stash. For Airtable, I took pictures of the pattern cover or first picture in the case of the pdf's, the sizes, and yardage requirements, then some sortable fields like woven vs knit, kids vs adults, male vs female or unisex, etc. It was quite a big job and I did purge as I went. But now my family members can log into my Airtable database and pick out the patterns they want me to make for them. And I'm much more familiar with what I have. I followed Mimi G's method with the paper patterns.

Have you tried using string and washer gusset envelopes for storing your pdf patterns? They’re a lovely alternative to plastic pockets.

If you don't have a single fabric to make your frugal frock out of, could you put 2 or 3 fabrics together and colour/pattern block a dress? I know there are several free patterns out there that lend themselves nicely to that.

Hi Linda. Yes I did think of that. I’ve been through my stash and I’ve a few that are 2 or 2.5 metres so I’m thinking I’ll be able to squeeze something out of them. Just means I can’t go for some of the patterns I’ve seen that you need 3-4 metres. I suppose that’s what’s fun about this challenge. It really gets you thinking!! x

Hi Marian 😊. I think I got my thread storage from ebay. I didn’t make my thread catcher. I bought it at a stitching show but I think you can make them pretty easily x
