Sewing Session: Making a Tall Wallet out of Vinyl

Watch as I stray from my trusty cork and try my hand at a different textile! I used soft stardust vinyl from Sew Hungry Hippie and had a blast whipping up this quick Tall Wallet.

I love the wallet and made one out of cork but ordered the vinyl from Sew Hungry Hippie. I made the vinyl one today and discovered a bad thing. If you get ANY glue on the vinyl side anywhere it just takes the vinyl finish right off. I had a small spoof this right at the end. I wanted to tell you that I used for the 'ribbon' Soft Metallic Copper Fabric which doesn't fray when cut, is very thin and protects from RFID and EMF Identity theft as well. I also inserted the same fabric inside the zipper pocket. Thank you for this fabulous pattern. I was surprised how quickly it worked up the second time. My vinyl one was a request in blue , s I hav gold and silver to go! What fun!

OMG! This makes me feel so much better! I absolutely HATE when I have to rip out…I don’t want to take my time, I rush and end up doing a terrible job which makes my job harder in the long run, lol! Super shiny!! I was sure that you glued the ID window closed - haha only to stitch two of the card slots closed instead! I've ordered some vinyls from her. She has a quick turnaround time. I've yet to sew anything yet because my sewing room is such a mess and I can't seem to get motivated to clean it. But it's very sunny today and my front door is open and the dogs are soaking in the fresh air, as am I!

Love the vinyl wallet you make and I REALLY love the templates you had made and yes please add them to your shop, as for the card slot piece that's an 1/8th too thick, just make it that much shorter. I'd love to see a tutorial on how you made the templates for your cork NCW like you said you would in your cork NCW tutorial, also I would love to see a NCW in that gold vinyl would be awesome too.

Hi Nicole, I keep coming back to you channel and watching your Tall wallet tutorials along with the NCW one, I've watched the others ;) I wanted to know if you've decide to sell the template set (seen in this video) for the Tall Wallet on your website yet? it would make cutting it out easier for me, yes I've got the pattern and have cut out the paper pattern pieces but I'm kinda lazy and the template you showed of the card slots looks real easy to use for cutting.

I got the card slot fabric from a hardware store, not online. I’m sure you could find it somewhere though, search “black weed barrier landscape fabric” and lots come up.

I NEED this!! You are so talented! Can you give the finished dimensions? I want to make this to slide my planner into one of the billfold sections like a checkbook. It is the Happy Planner Skinny Mini about 3" wide by 7" tall with 1"diameter disc binding.

Awww thank you for the kind words! The finished dimensions are 7" tall by 3.25" wide when closed, but you could easily enlarge the pieces slightly to ensure your planner fits!

Question: is the vinyl you put on cork adhesive or permanent? And what is the difference? Can I use permanent on cork fabric? I bought it thinking it was the right one to use but am not sure. I dont have a cricut machine..

I’m not quite understanding the question, I’m sorry. This vinyl in the video does not have any cork on it, it’s regular vinyl. The cork I use is only cork, no vinyl. I’m not sure what you purchased, and I don’t know what “permanent” you’re asking about using on the cork.

@@SewGnar Ah. Oh now I understand. Your project is vinyl fabric. I called the company at Expressions Vinyl and they explained how to use what I had bought. The permanent vinyl i bought was to put on the inside cover of a project..Sorry for confusion. You are such a source of knowledge and I figured you might explain abit.. but not without my clarifying what I was talking about lol!

You glue above the bottom card slot, leaving that one open for the ID to slide into
