The best way to start is to start! The worst that can happen is that you mess up some fabric, but you will get better! Just keep at it, and you'll be amazed at what you make in a year's time!

Great video. I do my buttons a tad different in that I place them so the buttonholes cannot slide up and down on the buttons. Of course, my buttonholes are a lot longer. That may make a difference. Usually, I make them horizontal so the fronts stay put. I have all the tools except the stork scissors and the neckband. I attach small scissors to my machines so they are always there when I reach for them. I love that the storks can rip out seams!
@ElizabethMadeThisSEW5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Joy! Definitely longer buttonholes need slightly different placement. I love that the storks are great at seam ripping too! I've heard people attach them to their machines for the same reason--how do you do it? Velcro? A hook?

Great video Elizabeth and welcome back! It’s funny but I only own one of the sewing tools you featured in this video, LOL! That is the fast turn tubes! I bought them many years ago and have only used them twice because they aren’t fast, LOL! I really like the ones you’re using with the dowel! Now that tube turned very fast! I may have to check those out! That fast turn tubes I have don’t have a dowel, it’s a metal piece with a hook on the end. That hooks never stays in the fabric and I always have to start over again halfway through the turn! Thanks for sharing!
@ElizabethMadeThisSEW5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Myra! I'm really glad to hear a mini-review about the Fast Turn tubes--I've always wondered about them but have never gotten them because of the price. I'll stick to my set, LOL! They are mega fast, especially with the red straw. I've found that you often don't have to get the red straw all the way into a thin spaghetti strap to turn it with this one--just get it started and it's pretty much magic.
@myralorraine5 жыл бұрын
Elizabeth Made This I do love that about your set! I will be looking to see if I can get one for myself!

I've been a tailor for nearly 30yrs and never seen a Simflex. Dont know how i missed that tool. Pretty awesome. I have a sleeve button card for marking buttons on a suit coat sleeve but somehow missed that sim flex. I have those other tools but cant live with out my double sided sleeve pressing board and wax based tailors chalk. The marks disappear when u hit them with steam from your iron.😉
@ElizabethMadeThisSEW4 жыл бұрын
Wax chalk is amazing, and those sleeve boards are so helpful! My sewing dealer recommended the Simflex to me when I was just starting out sewing, and it's been a trusty friend ever since.

Please don't keep scissors (or anything else) around your neck if you're machine sewing. It's a really, really dangerous thing to do, that's banned in most sewing studios. If the cord / ribbon gets caught in the machine it can pull you into it and cause major injury, especially if using a fast machine.
@ElizabethMadeThisSEW4 жыл бұрын
I could see that

The button gauge I’ll keep an eye out for and the turn it tubes. I hope I can find them online here somewhere. The safety pin is the method I use for the lack of tool and get the sore thumb thing. Loved your video. I have none of these tools 😬.
@ElizabethMadeThisSEW5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Karina! I think those two are the best. Drinking straws can work, but they're definitely not as sturdy. I'm trying to think--if you can find a plastic drinking cup with a reusable straw that would be better. I'll send you a pic of the one we have--the one I'm thinking of is between the medium and the large diameter in the set.

I have all your tools except the tube turner. Another tool that I just love is a buttonhole cutter. It makes cutting open buttonholes so much easier. I also use a seam roll a good bit. I recently purchased a Clover Hot Hemmer and am surprised at how much I prefer it over the metal one; no more burnt fingers! The other must have tools for me are a handful of specialty sewing machine feet I love.
@ElizabethMadeThisSEW5 жыл бұрын
I totally love my buttonhole cutter too Nadine! It makes such nice clean cuts and no more accidentally cutting the stitching. I got the Hot Hemmer for Christmas too, and it's a handy little gadget. It's really nice when you have multiple widths of hems you need to press. My only wish was that it was bigger!
@Penguinandpear5 жыл бұрын
Hey Elizabeth, great to see you back. You have some great tools there! I have a simflex, love it! I have a clapper but havent made the most of it yet. Magnetic pinholder is probably what transformed my sewing area (and reduced injury lol) x
@ElizabethMadeThisSEW5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Claire! LOL--magnetic pincushions definitely translate into less blood drawn! A clapper is awesome for any thicker fabric--it is possible to crush your seams with it, but on denim and wool it's a huge game changer. Seriously--who invented the Simflex--that person is my hero!

I feel it’s quite dangerous to hang scissors round the neck so I wouldn’t do that. The clapper is a great tool, I have one.
@ElizabethMadeThisSEW5 жыл бұрын
It could be certainly. I know that there's clips with a retractable string that you can hook a small pair of scissors to and clip to your shirt which is another good option. I've also seen people have a hook or clip on their machine for little clipping scissors--anything to keep clippers handy is good, and ultimately what makes sense for you is a good thing.

I love the idea of using straws for turning tubes of fabric. I was stuck on the inverting method by safety pin or bodkin. I have a set of metal straws that would work great with bamboo skewers. I bought them because they are reusable AND I can pit cherries with them. Thanks for the brilliant aha!
