I found your channel not too long ago and I'm surprised you don't have more views, I hope the algoritm will pick you up ! Your advice is very clear and complete and the clothes you sew look so neat ! Also you make adjusting patterns not so scary (as I'm a very new beginner and find it intimidating :))

Aww thank you so much for saying that! 🥰💕 Is there anything you’d like to see specifically? Congrats on joining the wonderful world of sewing!

Some of your recommended tools I already have and some that I may later want to invest into - like a thread snip and pinking shears. I don't really have any great tips or recommended tools, since I am a beginner sewist myself, but I do want to say one thing: if you are a beginner and just starting out to sew, you don't have to go buy a new sewing machine or one with many gadgets. If you have a friend or family member and that one person has a working sewing machine to give away, take that one. That way you can save a bit of money and you won't lose much money, if it turns out that you don't really like sewing while you're trying it out. I got mine from my grandma. It's an older model, but it's in working order and it serves it's purpose very well for my current state of skills. Down the road, when I got enough skills and money that I don't mind using for that purpose, I may want to invest into a better model that even has more gadgets. =)

That's a really great tip about the sewing machines! I don't have a vintage/antique machine but I've heard they are work horses so if people can get their hands on them, they're great to have. They may need to be serviced though, keep that in mind :) I'm totally in support of breathing new life into old machines!

I think I have all of these tools but I am intrigued about the tweezers trick for collars? Is there a video or blog post etc about it?

My "can't live without" tool is the French curve. I have to alter every pattern I use to fit my shape I rely on that baby ALL THA TIME! 20 years ago I never would have bought one. But today it's a must to get a good fit. Sewing for myself has evolved just like my shape! ;-) I also can't live without the tape dispenser! But I have to share it with your Uncle Dean! LOL

I made my own ham and sausage too and even made a free pattern myself. I also have the clear ruler and yes, they are available in cm :) I use one of my Viking Age replica scissors for snips.

Ooo Viking snips!! Sounds interesting!

@@LizVonVillas I bought mine from a blacksmith. It almost looks like old sheep scissors, just smaller. Can't add links to this comment so unfortunately I can't show it to you.

I like using bodkins or long, blunt upholstery" needles for making pointy points, and for threading ribbons through waistbands, lace, etc. I can't live without my tiny scissors that I use as thread snips and my heat-soluble pen!
@LizVonVillas3 жыл бұрын
Ahh good tip about the bodkin! I also love the heat/water soluble pens but I feel like they run out so quick :(

I have some jewelers pliers on hand for when a needle is tough to pull through. There's no point risking hand strain or fatigue for something like that.

I have a serger and still use my pinking shears. My sleeve roll (sausage) is helpful as well. I use a cooking skewer to turn tight corners and seams. It has been painted with latex to it from breaking.
@LizVonVillas3 жыл бұрын
ooo a cooking skewer! That's clever!!

My favorite tool is a rotary cutter (I believe this is the english word anyway). Ofc one need a cutting mat, but i find it much easier than using scissors. I do also love the see trough patchwork ruler and the ham!
@LizVonVillas3 жыл бұрын
I like my rotary cutter but I tend to stick with the scissors! I think they can be awesome for small projects but I hate cutting larger pieces out with the rotary cutter, too much shifting for me! Maybe if I had a really big cutting mat, I’d use it more often!

Definitely good scissors but also a good unpicker.No matter how long you've been sewing ,mistakes always happen.Their good when upcycling clothes.I also have a sleeve ironing board which has one side a narrow sleeve board and on the other side a wide sleeve board. I've had mine for forty seven years and it's is brilliant for sewing and everyday ironing.I'd also like a tutorial on how you use the tweezers to turn collars please.
@LizVonVillas3 жыл бұрын
Ah a sleeve board! That sounds very useful! I will make a tutorial for the corners 😁💕

my best tools are my loop turner and my seam gauge
@LizVonVillas3 жыл бұрын
The loop turner has been pretty useful but it’s also been pretty annoying at times lol. I recently heard about a technique for turning tubes that I’m definitely going to try! I will give a full report when I do! Seam gauges are pretty darn useful too. I have a couple of vintage ones!

Hi, I never have any luck with pinking shears, they always seem to go blunt quite quickly and are a bitch to get sharp again, but I am going to try the ones you have listed, but saying that I use a hand crank sewing machine, electric things seem to hate me lol, I do have a fancy electric one but it doesn't like certain fabrics (especially stretchy ones) and struggles to go through certain fabrics, but my victorian one will go through anything, it actually went through my finger once, so it is tough lol
@LizVonVillas3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I don't use my pinking shears with every project so they're still pretty sharp. When you sew with your newer machine, do you use the right needle for stretch fabric? I've found a walking foot to be so helpful as well! 😊
@mircaedesmedhurst81523 жыл бұрын
@@LizVonVillas I do normally, but my machine seized when I moved for some reason so I had it serviced and my guy told me that domestic machines as a general rule don't like stretch fabrics, but I don't have that problem with my hand machine, that machine is perfect, I think it was made in 1896 xxx
