In my sewing room for this weeks sewing video I sew two dresses! I sew these vintage style dresses using an authentic vintage sewing pattern from the 1950s. The sewing pattern is Advance 8435 from 1950 and it states that it is easy to sew. I found it to be even though I made a few mistakes I was able to correct them.
I love these dresses they are very practical and great additions to my vintage style wardrobe. I hope this video inspires you to sew something for yourself or just intrigues you about vintage fashion and vintage clothing and sewing.

Thank you for watching I would love for you to share the "Title" of your personal style as I have named mine "Vintage With A Modern Twist" Or any bits about your sewing journey or style evolution in general. At the least say hello, introduce yourself and lets normalize sewing being not such a solo hobby 😂 ❤Drew

I use to make wedding and brides mates dresses when I was younger. Now I do alterations for some people and sew for my self. I don’t know my style yet. I like some vintage but I like modern styles too. However my vintage style is the ones Audrey Hepburn use in her movies. Can you try to make one of those please.

I haven't come up with a name for my style yet, since my wardrobe is still being made by me. But it's going to be vintage from the 30's to the 50's, tomboy meets skirts (I'm shopping the century for design). Right now I'm just focusing really hard on figuring out fit and ease. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi

I love watching your sewing journey! It’s so very nice to see mess ups like I commonly do and know I’m not alone! I’ve been sewing for years and your KZbin channel is so very real for many of us. So many times we see a sewn project and it’s always shown as perfectly done. I move on from those channels. My bucolic life is another I adore because she will mess up and say oh well it’s not always going to go the way we want or think. Thank you!

I’m 67. I started sewing around age 6: a nearby neighbor had a treadle machine and I asked her to teach me to sew. I recall reaching my little foot down to the treadle to make it “go”. These days I mostly make quilts so cotton broadcloth is my go-to fabric. I’ve always liked natural fabrics because they are easy to manipulate and press. A favorite in my garment-sewing days was wool plaid because matching plaids is fun!

First, you have a voice that one can listen to all day. Second, your style is beautiful and classy. You should be proud of yourself for being a mom with kids who can still acheive a great look hand made from scratch. I enjoyed how you shared your mistakes and did not shy away from them and made me laugh when you mentioned the belly drop. 😂 I come from a family of fashion designers (my uncle my mother and my cousin are designers and tailors). Even my father was a fashion house manager.) Crocheting was my only personal preference. I have always dreaded using a sewing machine thinking it would nip my finger, but ended up purchasing one only last year since my carpal tunnel injury did not allow me to crochet for hours any longer. I started quilting and made 3 quilts last year. A little sceptical about making my own dresses though. I have already purchased a vintage pattern but I can't seem to figure out how to start. This is what brought me here and I really enjoyed watching your video you speak gently and slowly which is less overwhelming for beginners. Keep at it dear and God bless you and your family❤❤

That you so much for such kind words. My mother crochets or she used to until her wrist wouldn’t agree anymore. I was never able to pick it up but I hold dear the blankets she made for both of my children when they where babies. Being from a family of tailors sounds quite fascinating, I’m glad you quilt and if you ever want help with that pattern shoot me an email and I will help anyway I can. But you should give it a try. 😘Drew

Hi, I’m sewing for so many years. More than 30 years. Cotton is the best fabric to sew. However, when you begin using other fabric like satin, rayon are also good to sew too. The best is to try other fabric so you get the experience. Don’t be afraid to try other fabrics

Both dresses look lovely on you. Either dress would have been nice in either of the fabrics. I am 75 yrs old. I have been sewing since l was 5 years old when my Grandma first taught me to sew by hand. I first used a sewing machine in 7th grade home economics class and our project was a very simple Tonga made from a white bed sheet. My mother never let me use her machine at home until l got into high school. I had 2 yrs of home economics in junior high and 4 years in high school. In my senior year l used my first vogue pattern to make my prom dress and the evening coat that went with it. I did this in my senior home economics class. It was the first time l had ever made anything out of brocade. I not only had my teacher helping me with it but she also called the other home economics teacher in to help. I got an A++ on both the gown and the coat. It was also the first time l had ever made bond buttonholes. I still have the gown and coat put away in my cedar chest. I prefer to work with cottons now and l don't like working with the real bulky fabrics. My eldest daughter asked me to take one of my Grand-daughter's formals to make a dress out of it for her new baby girl. I discovered working with the sheer rayon l did not like working with it. But l did get the dress made for my Great Grand-daughter. I don't make much in clothing for myself due to how the patterns are made today. I make doll clothes for my Grand-daughter's and Great Grand-daughter's now or things for the home. The most challenging thing l made was my eldest daughter's wedding dress. I had to camouflage a 5 month pregnancy. However since my weight is coming down and l am not as stress out anymore. I have decided to start making things for me again. I like the vintage looks because that is what l grew up with. My mother made all my clothes and my brothers shirts. I did the same for my 5 children when l was raising them. However l learned sometime ago to never ever cut my original patterns. What l do no matter what it l trace out the pieces l need. This way the original pattern stays intact. Yes it is time consuming but will worth it in the end. Then l put the traced out pieces in an acid free bag along with the pattern. I never pay full price for a pattern l wait until they go on sale at Joanne's for $1.99. I just got 4 Simplicity patterns at Joanne's yesterday for 8$ 2 dress (1-1940 & 1 called The Baby Doll dress), 1 vintage apron and petticoat. Of course mine are only reproductions. Being on Social Security limits me on the true vintage patterns. I am starting with the apron pattern first. But before committing myself to fabric. I went to Good Will this morning and bought a king size sheet with a nice print to make the apron and this way any changes l can make knowing l only invest 5$. I have to say l like the fact a lot of young women are beginning to float back to how we dressed in the past. I get so tried of seeing even woman my age dressing in ripped or torn clothes. Or so tight they look like they had to be poured into it. Keep up the good look you have chosen for yourself. What you do and wear will reflex on your children one day.

You are an excellent Sewist , you have such great style, and you choose really wonderful fabric, I do notice that sometimes you have a little hiccup when it comes to instructions, everybody does, the thing I teach my students is that when you are reading the directions, have an 8 x 11 pad of paper or legal pad or whatever and write down bullet points. I’ve even had students that were really nervous and they had to write down the directions word by word. I know you would not have to do that but I think when you are taking notes, when you’re reading through the second time, I think sometimes that helps solidify those notes in your head, my students repeat back to me from the pen to the brain from the pen to the brain. I am a true believer!!! Sew on and Sew forth!!!😁😁😁 By the way, don’t worry about your belly, you have two beautiful babies, you earned every ounce of that beautiful body, I’m sure your husband loves you and that is all you need to know !!!

I´m 16 and I´ve been sewing since 13 when I was gifted a sewing machine. I love fashion in general, but I would describe my personal style as colourful and fun, with lots of florals and polkadots. My favorite fabric to sew is cotton because it is the easiest. After 3, almost 4, years of sewing I´ve done many projects that didn´t worl out and many who became staple pieces. I loved sewing your video and seeing your experience with sewing and personal style. I´m planning to go to fashion uni next year and bring all of the tips that KZbin has gave me :)

I always trace my vintage patterns so I don’t feel bad if I screw it up doing alterations, etc. Medical exam paper is cheap and works great. I mark the crap out of my pieces, like center front seam, wrong and right sides. Sleeves are a bear to keep the placement correct once you get them separate from the pattern pieces! Marcy Harriell has a great video on invisible zips. I don’t do any other style of zippers now. I’ve done so many stupid things, but I learn those lessons well! As Yoda said, Failure, the greatest teacher is…😂

Hi, These dresses are beautiful. I sew since i can think (it was my Moms hobby and I literally played underneath her sewing table) but I got good at it around 16/17 when I started learning how to draft patterns. After high school I trained as a dressmaker but am not working as one now. My favorite fabrics are wools (because you can manipulate them with steam and the worst are synthetic satins and organzas as they slip away and burn easily when ironed. A tip for zippers would be to machine sew the place where it goes with a very long stitch and then sew the zipper behind it. Then you can open the first seam up and done. (I hope this makes sense) or for invisible zippers: use a special foot and try a few times, I still struggle with them if I haven’t done one in a while. For hems on non shrinkable fabrics: do a facing with bias tape, also looks great with a contrasting color. Because the hem should be as narrow as possible, because the fabric can’t be manipulated. I haven’t found a way to make them not wavy with a wide hem.

Just found your channel. I hope you are still producing videos. Of course I will check. I made my first dress when I was twelve. That was more than 5 decades ago. After college I stopped sewing as much until I had my first child. I sewed for my 3 children until they wanted store bought clothes… I didn’t try to dissuade them. I have been more interested in sewing over the last few years. My interest now is using fabric and not throwing fabrics in the landfill so I like to upcycle. I too have come to terms with my body and I love making clothes for me. My favorite fabrics this summer are linens and cotton blends. I will sew with wool and wool blends and denim in the fall and winter. I’m going to sew some active wear this year too after I return from summer vacation. Home decor is also a good sewing time. I try to take current fashion and hack it to my style. Since you ask, my style is Interesting and Well Put Together or Classic But Currently Cute.

My personal style is 1970’s (or late 60’s) pieces paired with modern pieces. I love sewing because I can get a unique garment I want to wear . I have been sewing for 20+ years but I’m just an intermediate because there were long periods of time I didn’t sew. Maybe a project went bad and took so long that I gave up. I recently started back, being inspired by people who sew and show their journey online. I love seeing that I’m not the only one who messes up and it gives me the patience to just unpick something and starting over.

You want to know a fun story? My first ever sewing project was a pair of pedal pushers (ya. Ageing myself here) for a school disco! They were made from the most horrendous interiors fabric. And I seem to recall they even had tassel trim. (I was about ten. My style has deffo changed since then!) The most annoying project? A slip dress. If the fit is off it looks terrible. My proudest make? A plaid coat. In a pink and cream wool. (Taught me a lot about collars!) I think watching @theclosethistorian helped so much with my confidence with manipulating patterns and actually getting the fit right and @catherinesews has showed me so many useful little tidbits & techniques. If you’ve not already, check them out. I love both of your dresses. I would pinch them in a heartbeat! (I’m also really in to your headband with the dress combo *chefs kiss*

Hello. I’ve been sewing since the early 90s with a Husqvarna Designer 1 as my sewing gift to myself! I love your dresses and how you styled them with your beautiful shoes and handbags. I’m a stiletto girl myself. A tip for your delicate patterns is to use iron on interfacing to reinforce them. Use parchment paper to protect your iron as the holes in the pattern will allow the interfacing adhesive to stick to the sole plate. I do this with patterns I know I will use often. I hope this helps. ❤

These dresses are great! My wardrobe is severely lacking in practicality haha. I personally love printed fabric so I always have to make it a conscious choice to buy solid colors - it helps if it has an interesting weave or texture. I sew with a lot of cotton but I’ve purchased a ton of rayons I need to get better at working with so I can make all of my beautiful 1940s dress patterns. 😊 My mother is a seamstress so I’ve known how to sew pretty much my whole life, but I never bothered to learn how to read a pattern until about 7 years ago when I took sewing as an elective class in University. Though I didn’t start getting serious about it until right about 2020 when I had access to my mother-in-law’s machine and needed a hobby haha! Sewing is a great hobby but also an amazing life skill to have.

I love them! Both dresses look incredible on you! Nothing wrong with making "everyday" wear. Liking and getting a lot of use out of the clothes you make is awesome, colorful or not. You do you!! My style's the complete opposite, like the 1980's threw up over all other decades and smushed them together in one neon-patterned outfit 🤣🤣 Best fabric to work with--tough choice. Honestly though, quilting cotton. It's natural, cheap, and holds a shape well. Worst fabric: Chiffon, and any other wiggly silks or synthetic substitutions. Slippery, hard to cut, hard to sew. Velvet comes second. Shame they look fabulous 😒

I really like both dresses on you. I think you could do the straight one in a heavier fabric and it would be super chic for colder months. I realized a few months ago I needed to figure out better styles for me so I did a fun "personal style" online course with Orly Shani where you end up with 4 words to define your style. I think it has helped me feel more invested in what I am making and end up with less UFOs. Oh for those full skirts or curved hems - I watched a video from My Bucolic Life - she suggested using hem lace (not sure the name) but you sew on one ridge and pull a bit and it very slightly makes the edge pull in like a gather and it helps get rid of the puckers. Thanks for the videos.

I love the end product as it washes and gets so soft but it can be troublesome and shifty to sew. I've started to get together with a few sewers in my area to chat and sew together once a quarter. When you have fabric where its hard to tell front from back, mark it with your chalk in several places, even before you start cutting. When putting so much work into a project, I tend never to use too cheap of cotton/print fabrics. I make sure they have a solid thickness and tight weave. Nothing hurts more than to put a lot of work into a project, and then it starts falling apart after a few uses. Been there, done that. Good work, Keep it going.

Hi, Drew….I have tried sewing off and on for many years, and have now started “trying” again. I’m going to be 75 in a couple of weeks, but still trying to sew better. One thing I did learn from another KZbinr is to buy some exam room paper (the kind they put on the table in the doctor’s office for an exam) and use this to trace the original pattern piece, especially if has some damage like to piece you showed earlier. I’ve already traced out most of my pattern I’m going to start in a few days and I’m really liking the “new” pattern pieces. But, when ordering the rolls of exam paper be prepared to have enough to last you years, unless you have sewing friends you could give/sell some to. I think I got 12 rolls! Anyway, I thought you might want to try making an old, flimsy (kinda like me😂) pattern into one you won’t have to be so careful with. Wishing you years and years of happy sewing!

I just found your channel, and what a delight! You’ve only been sewing for 3 years? Wow! That’s impressive! I laughed when you said you were making brown dresses, because brown is not a good color on me, so I never wear it, but my goodness! They are beautiful! So chic, and I love them with the modern shoes! Oh, and I’ve been sewing for 35 years, some garments, mostly quilting, but back into garments now, and KZbin has been hugely helpful in my learning! And also showing that others sew, so it is not such a solitary activity! You are so inspiring!

You did an amazing job on both dresses, Drew! I especially like the fabric and movement of the solid brown one. I started teaching myself sewing and crafting as a kid. Lots of doll clothes, then dollmaking during the Cabbage Patch craze and beyond. Quilting was what I really wanted to learn, so I started that in college. I tried garment sewing back then, but zippers, buttonholes and hems whipped me😄. I was primarily a quilter for 25 years (!).I came back to garment sewing in the last 2 years. Watching people like Bernadette Banner, Angela Clayton and others inspired and taught me. Over the years my general sewing skills had increased, so now I can understand what the instructions are telling me to do and how to do it. I can't believe that overall, I've been sewing about 50 years. Whoa! I'm enjoying your journey.

I’ve known the basics since I was a kid, but been sewing garments for about 2 years now and finally feeling like I’m really getting it and wearing my makes! I was sewing almost every day for a year tho, so That helped me accelerate my learning, and always challenging myself. I’m totally with you on loving vintage style but not someone who does “full on” vintage very often. (Mostly just for parties and date nights. My style is kind of 2 very different modes!) I do almost the opposite tho: vintage accessories with modern clothes on the day to day. Mixing with modern is a great way to practice new styles! I guarantee most vintage wearers started that way too. All of the sudden it just feels normal to wear a head to toe look! I think you look SO good in these dresses!!! They totally suit you, and could be worn for so many occasions. And I love sewing with cottons-so easy! I love watching your channel:) I don’t have any friends who sew so it makes me feel less lonely to have folks to share my passion with❤ thanks for sharing with us! I really like sewing with cotton, linen and rayon. Rayon challis is very shifty and requires more care when cutting and sewing (and pinning and more pinning) but I find the results to be well worth the extra time. I recently worked with a stretch patent pleather and that was a huge pain in the butt! I’ve been sewing for about 5 or 6 years but I think I did a good job choosing beginner-friendly projects and I still wear the second dress I made (Simplicity 1080). The first dress I made was plagued by a bad fabric choice (poly satin instead of a super thin, drapy fabric) and ended up too big because I didn’t know how much ease the pattern had or how to properly adjust fit. Some hemming tips: I pretty much always enlist the help of a buddy to level the hem. There is also a gadget that sprays a line of chalk at whatever level you set it to so you can level it on yourself without assistance. Then again, I do have a sway back so nothing that’s level on a mannequin is level on me. For circle skirts, you can either sew a basting stitch half an inch or so from the edge of the fabric and gather it in to match the smaller circumference or use bias tape/hem tape to ease in the fabric. Or, if you don’t ever plan on passing down a dress to someone who is taller than you, you can cut off all but a half inch or less of the excess fabric and do a tiny rolled hem.
@SewSewDrew
@SewSewDrew Жыл бұрын
Great hemming tip! I never heard of this gadget! And challis hasn’t been the nicest to me but I will try again soon. So much growth happens between 1-3 years I am excited for what happens in my 3-5 year range! Thanks for sharing this ♥️

I started my sewing journey by quilting. So, I am most comfortable with quilting cotton. But I do have some cotton silk blends for some underclothing and I have some rayon for a 1930s dress. So I haven't worked with either of those fabrics yet. So I hope it won't be too difficult. My quilting cotton outfit I am making a 1930s outfit but I am using 1970s inspired prints. So I am calling my 30s does 70s. I even have multicolored flower buttons to go with it.

I've been sewing off and on since the mid-70's. I have to say that the methods we used back then, as taught by our high school sewing teachers, were much more exacting and professional than methods used today. I've yet to see on KZbin the truly proper (old school) method of sewing (not your videos of course!), and I've watched hundreds if not thousands of videos. My sewing teacher would have had a heart attack by the sloppiness today! Our stripes and plaids always matched perfectly, or we had to rip it out and do it over. Even the slightest blip on an otherwise straight seam would have to be done over. We ALWAYS had to straighten our grain on wovens and I've yet to see anyone do that on videos today. It's an important step that should never be missed. Even the sewing classes I've seen online don't teach the truly proper method of sewing. I'm a dying breed, apparently.

I think your era was lucky enough to be taught home economics in classrooms with teachers instructing and correcting you in real time. Those of us who sew these days (home sewing) anyway, we are self taught. Learning as we go. All on our own. And doing it for the love of creating we are not aiming for perfection just a soothing hobby. Well at least me anyway. ♥️ I do wish I had a teacher over my shoulder at times. But I receive help corrections and pointers from my community here and it means a lot to me.

one of my favorite fabrics to sew with is a linen blend. Its has a nice drape and has body to it for a crisp look. I've only just recently became confident in my sewing ability and I've been sewing for 6 years! But I'm also a perfectionist and anything that doesnt make the cut doesnt get worn. I'd say my style has been changing as I've learned how to sew! I love collecting vintage patterns, and trying interesting and unique designs. but my body type looks best in certain styles. I look to Audrey Hepburn for inspiration (who doesn't). I love delicate and cottagey romantic styles. I've been exploring more 40's "make do and mend" styles and 60s "gogo" looks.

You look beautiful in both dresses but I personally love the printed one. It does look slimmer on you. As far as full hems do a little gathering stitch at the bottom to incorporate the fullness. Hello Drew, i have just discovered your channel and I really enjoyed your sewing journey. I also started sewing a couple of years ago and I am still learning. If I may, I always transfer my patterns on transparent paper beforehand so I can do the same garment over and over again in different sizes without damaging the original pattern. I also make the alterations on my secondary pattern when necessary. It is time consuming but sometimes worth it. Something else which took my sewing to the next level: I use French seams whenever I can. It really helps with fabrics which fray a lot and I have noticed that my clothes are more durable since I started doing it. Thanks for sharing your experience and trust the process!
