I used to hate interfacing. The more I get to know about it, the less I fear it. This is super helpful and I'm kind of embarrassed at mis-use of some very stiff interfacing - thinking this was more of a "one-size-fits-all" type of thing. This is one of those "you don't know what you don't know" realizations. (deep breaths, giving myself grace) :) thanks, this is super helpful!

I like to fuse my interfacing to the fashion fabric and then cut out the pattern pieces. I’m not a fan of Pellon interfacings in general. I generally order from Fashion Sewing Supply, I find their products are much superior. However when I did a quick search, I’m not sure they are still in business.

Really informative video Toni, I sew with a lot of linens & rayons, (climate related) I take sewing lessons as well & have come to realise the power of pressing, steam & cooling process (not ironing & the pressing cloth) I prefer the fusable interfacing & cotton interfacing. 🤗

Such cute fabric for a blazer & not noticeable. The right interfacing is your best friend, it lifts your sewing to another level, but it can be confusing, I made little test templates using different weights with fabrics and when it was right I labelled them and kept them for reference, until I got more experience. Good explanation. Enjoyed it.

Great tips! Years ago I used to watch Sandra Betzina’s PBS show and her tip was to just take a piece of fabric and interfacing a little larger than the pattern piece and just fuse those before even cutting out the pattern piece. It comes out much neater and you don’t have to fiddle so much trying to line up the tiny pieces. To have a nice finished edge on facings, Pattern Scout has instructions in her patterns to sew the non-attached side of the fabric and interfacing right sides together at 1/8”, flip out the correct way and then press the two together. It’s also very neat looking.

This was such a great informative video. Thank you. Yes, it’s such a learning curve with interfacing. I made a knit top that required interfacing at the V neck. At the time, I didn’t even know there was knit interfacing and yes my neckline is a little stiff. I really like the top anyway. Also I used interfacing on what I’ll call a cotton tweed fabric. The interfacing didn’t adhere and tried over and over. I finished the jacket but the interfacing is loose in the inside facing. Anyway that was a fail overall but maybe a sew in would have worked better. And yes I would love a pdf. Learned a lot from this.

I wish I’d seen your post last week, as I literally just finished sewing a top that had a neck facing. I was sewing with a beautiful soft fabric and interfaced with a knit interfacing but it was still far too stiff. Sigh! This time I’ll just sew my interfacing down with a top stitch. But thanks so much because next time I’ll know to look for a lighter weight interfacing. Really appreciated your tutorial 😊

I like fusing a block of fabric just big enough to fit the facing pieces. I'm always worried the little pieces, which usually have bias cut sections, will be slightly misshaped before I fuse it. By fusing the fabric before I cut the facings, I know they are accurate and will fit properly!

Lining are different because it really depends on the type of fabric and end use.

This was helpful thank you. Did you ever attempt to reheat incorrect interfacing to remove it and change it to the correct weight? Is interfacing lining a thing? I'm currently making a garment with extremely lightweight lining, without pattern instructions, and I'm wondering if interfacing the lining would improve the finished look.

You don’t interface lining. If you need more weight you can add interfacing to the fashion fabric.

@ oops I proceeded to put knit stay tape along seam allowance of the lining armholes and neck line before I got your reply 🤪. Oh well I’m sure it’s not the end of the world. This lining is a static free super thin one. Hopefully it helps me get a crisper result, in addition to understitching.
