I want to understand this addiction mortal problem and how it might be unhealthy for my Christianity when my personal mind and physical body accepts it as it's calming and personal soothing. God bless us all, Gustavo Ceja

If you can ever find that survey that Carnes used in his study, get it,,,, I'm one of those 57 women who returned the survey and holy cow, it was the most intense list of questions and set up in such a way, that it's impossible to NOT make a lot of insights about the past.... What we grow up with becomes normalized and this questionnaire totally laid bare all those old myths.. Thanks for this presentation,, well said and insightful...

12 step programs are great for the sharing and rebuilding of healthier relationships, but they are detrimental in that "God" becomes the new addiction and often keeps people from the root of their addiction, which is childhood trauma. God can become addictive. Its created in the mind and becomes the "good, all loving parent" in the persons mind. Its a fantasy bond. This keeps their pain masked and thus they don't act out their addictions. But to truly heal, the childhood pain needs to come up on a deep, experiential level. I think that psychedelics offer promise in this regard as they allow people access to their childhood, early traumas.

If you think God is a fantasy parental bond, you don't understand step 2 and 3 at all. That's exactly what the higher power is NOT. God isn't an addiction, He's the only cure. Taking more drugs is not the answer. The only thing that resolves this is through connection--to God, to others, and to oneself.

It is time to stop dragging our feet on this. Psychedelics need to be part of mainstream therapy; MDMA, Psilocybin, etc. We have all these treatments and still very poor outcomes. Very few people recover from deep traumas and becoming healthy, functioning, relatively happy people. These models help people, but the percentage is still small and very expensive to spend years and years in psychotherapy.

"Sex addiction" is simply a behavior that bothers the "addict" or those with whom he/she interacts. Behaviors are not diseases, but it is very profitable to call them diseases, and it gives misbehaving people good excuses.

So you do not believe sex addiction is as much of a disease as heroin addiction? Or is addiction not a disease? Each addiction regardless of the substance is caused mainly by our dopamine system. This system can be shut down by substance abuse taking years to recover and causing many issues for the person. An addict that relapses is not doing so to have fun and could care less about making an excuse for whAT they are doing. They are being driven by their fight or flight response to provide what the body needs to survive. Its no more profitable calling it a disease but classifying it this way gives more people a chance of treatment through their healthcare.

Nicolas if you do any study of the brain, you will know that acting out/compulsive behaviors etc, come from the subcortical regions of the brain, they are not conscious decisions. The reason that dopamine is important is dopamine can calm the body down from emotional/affect dysregulation. Much of the healing is to help them realize that shame drives the addiction and it is not a bad moral compass. It is to calm the body down, to regulate the system. The way we were designed to regulate is from connection, literally a right brain to right brain connection, which is called coregulation of emotions.
