95: Compulsive Sexual Behaviour, Attachment & Shame

I was arrested early in 2022. My life has been dismantled on so many levels but I wouldn't exchange the redemption and rehabilitation I've found as a result for my old behaviours! I have learned about my adverse childhood experiences, my early exposure to pornography and the way that my attachment style has influenced my need for validation through compulsive sexual behaviours! Now I know when I'm feeling a 'craving' What I'm really feeling is my inner child asking for attention and my trauma response reflexively looking for a maladaptive coping mechanism to avoid having to feel the pain and emptiness and do the work!!

Hi Laura, My daughter is bipolar and has compulsive hypersexuality. What can be done to control her impulsivities to be promiscuous. This is a big problem for her. I worry what kind of trouble that she can get into. She also has a 13 year old daughter. This creates a whole other conundrum. Any advice would be appreciated. When you have bipolar it causes this. What can be done. Really bad impulsive decisions.

I have this problem as well. I'm also bipolar and have manic episodes which manifest as a desire to sneak out for anonymous encounters. I'm also into BDSM and am into exploring new roles. I'm a switch. But I don't feel shame about it. Rather, I look at things I've done and it makes me smile. I never feel ashamed. I feel happy that I had fun and got to experience a new partner/kink.

My mood disorder doesn't change according to my bipolar. I always identify with it and have since I was a kid. I didn't know what my desires to be choked, hair pulled and roughly meant I was into BDSM until I was 35, when I looked it up.

Some academic careers are built on quibbling over terminology. Whether it's called sex addiction, sexual compulsivity, or hyper-sexuality, it's a serious problem for those who have it.
